The Ptr really is a great deal for a semi auto 308. You might want to poke around the m14/m1a forums for other sellers/makers of m14 rifles. Just be ready for a pissing contest as the people are territorial about who you buy from.

Eh. I'm not really in the market right now. Probably won't be for a few years yet.
I might look into it at some point, though.
EDIT: Also, with regards to good deals, I've heard people saying that AR-10s are going for around $600 nowadays. If I didn't already own an AR-15 and didn't think having more than one of a type of weapon is boring, I'd be creaming myself.

yeah ain't that hard I just grab mags when I'm in illinois but even in CO they ain't hard to find nobody really cares except for the denver/boulder area

M1As are cool, I prefer them to PTRs and etc, and they're about tied with FALs in my book
But they're pricey for what you get, imo. Or else I'd definitely buy one.

I definitely like the sights over the PTR's, and damn does it look nice, but the PTR is cheaper, plus the action isn't exposed and vulnerable to mud/dirt/other debris.
I honestly think the sights are the worst thing about the PTR.

I don't really factor in reliability of an action or anything like that, because if I have any weapon going out into the field camping or etc. with me it'd probably just be a boring old AR or something. Andyeah, cost is prohibitive.
I've never shot any PTRs, granted, but from the few I've held they just don't feel quite right to me. Kinda biased, since I vastly prefer rifle grips.
