I might seem out of my place here, but it's very gun related and I would very much like to appeal for some advice.
I've been considering building myself an accurate imitation of an AKS-74U using either 3D printing and/or Lost Foam Aluminum Casting to use as a hero prop for filming and reenactment/cosplay. The gun would not be designed to fire any projectiles and just cycle/eject dummy rounds/casings with compressed air/gas in the piston for visual effect, but it would be constructed entirely from parts accurate to the real thing. If need be, there would be a swappable muzzle-break that is brightly coloured, as well as other interchangeable part substitutes (ie solid mags, static bolt carrier) that would make it more friendly to take to appropriate events such as conventions, etc.
However I have concerns with legalities since parts like springs and magazines could be considered actual firearm parts. I have no means or skill to make workable spring parts myself unfortunately. I'd be certain that it isn't legal for me to order firearm parts of any description from anywhere, which would make getting original spring parts a large no-no which is a shame since I wanted use intentionally weakened springs to use for the build. Getting springs (or any of the parts) manufactured by a third-party company has me afraid that it could be deemed suspicious or criminal to manufacture weapon parts and I could get in trouble for it. I'm not sure what the case is since there isn't anything specific telling me that you can't make imitation firearms here in Australia.
I don't know... Maybe I'm in way over my head with this. I just really want to make a highly detailed hero prop that I can enjoy using in my future projects and take to conventions, but it sounds like it might be a large hassle if it's treated with the same regulations as real firearms. :frown:
What state are you in?
not to rain on your parade but i doubt that 3d printing will let you print parts that will last more than a couple cycles/dry fires. there is a lot of pressure on the hammer, sear, auto sear when you cycle the bolt. likevise letting the bolt slam home will no doubt create cracks in the receiver
If it's just a prop gun, there is no reason to give it hammers, sears and all that shit. If it's going to be powered by compressed air, the trigger can activate the valve and it just pushes the bolt back.

I wouldn't touch it if I were you. The law is probably vague enough to get you.
so because it's 2am and I have access to a credit card and little to no regard for "practicality". I just bought this ar500 XL Plate carrier 2x 11x14" Lvl III plates and 2x 6x8 lvl III plates. I got a condor sentry right now but I'm a big dude (6'4" 255-280 depending on if I'm cutting or bulking) and that thing is damn near too small for me.

Ah... So that means no 3D printing? That's a shame, since plastic would have been lighter and safer to build with. It seems a little ironic that it is considered dangerous since casting molten metal in a backyard forge would seem far more dangerous...
How about imitation firearms in general? I know realistic imitations and deactivated firearms are "regulated" by vendors and can't be imported without certain requirements, but building one at home...? Is it out of the question? Are the lines too blurred between manufacturing an imitation versus a real firearm, in spite of not being able to fire a projectile? I fear I may be stepping into legal grey areas...
I found something from the Victoria Police site when searching for laws regarding imitation arms, and if I may cite:
Can I make a toy look more realistic?
Yes, however if the modifications make the toy resemble a working firearm, it could
be considered to be an imitation firearm. In this case you will need either a Chief
Commissioner’s Prohibited Weapons Approval or a Governor in Council Exemption.
I'm sure this looks like it has been butchered plenty of times over. Who's going to tell a Chief Commissioner or Governor in Council that their realistic but colourful M1911 toy was modified to look like Batman's sidearm of choice...? But giving a toy gun that is somewhat realistic in operation a neat paint job is probably okay compared to building a functional prop (out of metal since 3D printers are taboo for guns) that imitates a prohibited weapon.
What does a Chief Commissioner’s Weapons Approval or a Governor in Council
Exemption allow me to do?
One of these authorities will allow you to manufacture, possess, carry, use, sell or
import an imitation firearm in the state of Victoria (depending on your genuine
reason for obtaining the authority).
I can't find anything like this on the NSW Police site though, so I assume it doesn't apply to NSW? I've found in NSW police permits for owning imitation arms would require me to apply for an Application for a Firearms Permit (PDF) and an Imitation Firearm Permit Legitimate Reason which I know I don't have the ability to afford a several ton safe to store some replica weapons, let alone get a permit since I'm a year underaged. No way that's happening... :s:
How must I store my imitation firearms?
Imitation handguns and long arms must be stored safely and securely in a manner to ensure that:
• The imitation firearms are not readily accessible to others;
• The imitation firearms are not available for possession, carriage or use by others unless they are
also holders of a Chief Commissioner of Police Approval (Prohibited Weapons) issued for the same
reason or are other wise exempt (if applicable); and
• When being transported between the usual place of storage and places at which the imitation firearms
are legitimately used (reason of which is stated in this authority), they are stored in a manner that is not
readily accessible to others and concealed from plain sight.
That's pretty vague... does that mean it doesn't need a very expensive or very heavy safe? I'm confused...
On a tangent...
[sp]I've handled a deactivated Lee-Enfield rifle once for a dance concert (I was a performer acting as an ANZAC soldier). The guy who had lent it worked at a surplus store in the local area and offered for us for a small fee to use it for a few days, but he was very hesitant after realising his collectors license had recently expired. He was probably afraid that, should anything bad happen with said weapon, he would get into trouble because no insurance, legalities and all that. Though he was fine with it after clarifying that the item would be handled with extreme caution and the concert was at an RSL club hall and not some school play. After we were done with it, it was safely returned without a hassle. It was wrapped in purple cloth and shoe laces as to conceal it and prevent any alarm during transportation so it would be safe. I wonder how this could apply to my current predicament...[/sp]
Ugh... This really sucks... I just really wanted to take on this project.. but unless it is solid with no moving parts and could not be distinguished as an real weapon, then it looks like I won't be able to do this legally, which is a real shame since I was really looking forward to it... I don't want to have to face a SWAT team and a several year sentence because I'm found in possession of what could be classified as homemade imitation firearm without a permit... I don't know of any way around this. :frown:
[sp]fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck: tldr; NSW law not lenient, most likely can't do imitation gun prop. This upsets me greatly.[/sp]

I know here in SA "imitation firearms" - basically realistic looking toys - are treated the same as real firearms, yet deactivated firearms aren't firearms. Dumb as shit but who expected politicians to be sensible?
what if it was an imitation firearm, but it had a solid barrel, and no mechanism of firing. Then it'd be a "deactivated imitation firearm"
Then it would probably still be illegal in Canada.
Hey Prusse, I had no idea Norway had a tube-magazine fed falling block rifle. That's cool as hell.

An imitation firearm is a firearm and a deactivated firearm needs a certificate from a licensed armourer (usually the police) stating it was deactivated correctly.
It would require you to make a firearm which is illegal and then pay to have it deactivated because you can't do it yourself.
Probably not the right place but I have a fuck-ton of shitty tactical gear I'm looking to unload or I'm going to just throw it out. If you have like a little brother or something they'd go nuts with it but it's like a bunch of uniforms, condor vests and pouches etc. etc.
Let me know.
Hey, has anyone here had any experience or heard anything about the Marlin XT-22R rifles?
Also looking for opinions on 3-9x40mm Nikko Stirling scopes, don't really have a model number.
My father's put a deposit on one that's selling for $350, after looking online it seems to be a mixed bag. Heaps praising it, lots bashing it.
I hate how Classicfirearms is going video newsletters now. I honestly dont want to watch a video to find pricing out for new shit they bring in. Its cool theyre doing it but I wish theyd have the old ads too
I just got a HSGI Costa Rig. I had a china-shit version but decided to go get a real one. Damn the quality is so much better, I mean, that was going to be a given but even the colors are so much better.
I think I'm about done being clone gear. Which is great except the real deals are so expensive. I just bought a HSGI Bleeder Pouch too. So I think that's all I need for now, I can live without the rest.
But I think I want to put together a full battle belt and a PC with plates. Probably an LBT6094a.

Oh, I also got my leather holster I wanted. I know you guys were iffy on it but I don't think I'll have those problems, at least not for a long, long time. I'm in love. So much more comfortable than IWB (but that's a given) but compared to the other OWB holsters I've tried to CC with especially the SERPA it's so comfy and low profile.

Could you build a short-recoil semi automatic with no springs by having the bolt/slide operate like a piston in an engine? Inertia from recoil energy would carry it all the way open, then all the way closed to the locked position.

I'm imagining it as short-recoil because that doesn't need a rotating bolt to stay in battery and it would be unlikely to bounce out of battery

What would stop the mechanism from rotating and going out of battery, or needlessly chucking rounds out? The only things that i see working would be like a lock block/toggle system, or have roller locks. But at that point, you might as well own an HK type rifle.

The muzzle rize and recoil in general would be fucking insane

For a few reasons, my favorite being that the flywheel youd need to keep the momentum going as its loading another round would be way larger and way heavier than a simple spring.
Got some TruGlo TFOs on my G19, I fucking love them
The muzzle rize and recoil in general would be fucking insane
I was actually thinking that depending on which way it's allowed to rotate, it would counteract recoil.
I'm not talking from any kind of practical perspective here, more trying to put myself in the shoes of a guy in 1890 who has no idea how to design a gun but has an idea and wants to see if it'd work :v:
Gunpowder piston engines were a thing at one point, sort of. Never really took off because they didnt work at all. This would kind of be the same thing.
You would probably have to set it up to where it would just keep firing until ammo is gone, then reset it. Thats not really useful for anything besides cutting down trees or something.

I can see someone in the 1870s/80s designing one with the intent of using it as a volley gun. It would be marketed as the "No-crank Gatling".

So my BGC and stock came in today, so I assembled the rest of my AR build:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/bZskQaA.jpg[/t]
Here's the parts list:
SFRC Blemished lower
True North Arms LPK with trigger and pistol grip
True North Arms buffer and buffer tube
Colt Canada blemished IUR (my blemish is rattling)
Ares Armor black nitride BCG
Magpul CTR stock in grey
Things still left to buy:
Nikon M223 3-12x42 BDC600 scope with mount
Some other trigger that's adjustable and single-stage (will probably not bother for a while, not so urgent)
So I said I was selling some stuff earlier. Turns out I have another two totes full of tactical gear and other stuff. Here is the album of stuff hit me up:
