A grammar lesson for Facepunch - regarding "it's" and "its"

People also need to learn the difference between their, they're and there, as well as your and you're.
It's fucking simple people, I knew this shit when I was 8.
I see that it was already mentioned, but I'm reinforcing it because it's necessary.

I don't think he's a grammar nazi, but it may seem that way to grammar retards, people who can't figure out the difference between these simple words without their brains starting to smoke.

English, motherfucker, do you speak it?
Slightly off-topic, but I hate that people think that because we're on the internet we shouldn't have to use correct grammar.
It's quicker to type on a computer than handwrite, so if anything, such people should use these shortcuts (ur, lyk, w/e) in their writing at school and piss off their teachers that they hate so much, rather than pissing off me. It's jarring to read hundreds of mistakes in peoples' writing despite the fact that they went to school for over ten years to learn about this kind of thing.
This thread made me nostalgia about the smartness system.
In other news, I just read the 2012 thread and realized one out of five FPers can spell "calendar."
I am just surprised you haven't learned this when studying English.
Why do you assume that every single human on earth knows English?
I had to learn English all by myself using the internet, chatting with people in English on Steam, etc.
Don't get all butthurt because people make this mistake, it's really not that important and the majority doesn't even know the difference.
Bottom line, Shut the fuck up and let people spell the way they want to.
Please add something about comma splices, and how FPers need to stop using them in place of colons in thread titles.
e.g.
"Dogs, nature's awesomest animals"
"Ghosts, are they real?"
etc
I hate it and I want to permaban everyone who does it
I don't really care about your life story but I will answer your question.
I don't assume everyone knows English, how you got that idea I really don't know, I was talking to the people who HAVE studied English hence "I am just surprised you haven't learned this when studying English."
You didn't study English, you just learned it yourself. And so how you thought I thought every single human on Earth knows English, well, I really don't know, yet again.
Could of is such a stupid one to complain about
Could of died
Could have died
to me, they both sound fine
Of course both sound correct, say "could've" and "could of". You type "could of" because most people say "could've" in place of "could have". I bet you wouldn't type out "I of" for "I've".
[editline]08:49AM[/editline]
I always (try to) type in proper grammar in forums. I've even been doing it more in game, and in chats.
This thread made me cry tears of joy. At last someone who cares about proper spelling. You should put the differences of defiantly and definitely in the OP because very few people here actually use the correctly.

Do you expect people to speak a certain way? See there are many people in the composition world that believe in a theory which is called expressive theory that basically states that as long as the reader understands what the writer means and that the meaning is basically unaffected by the grammatical errors in the writing then the writer has accomplished his or her task and grammar doesn't much matter. Now if the grammar errors do affect the meaning then that is a problem but as long as the reader understand then no harm no foul.
Oh, yeah, and I wrote the above without any commas to get my point across. I realize that there needs to be some commas around some non-restrictive clauses, and some more commas separating dependent clauses and independent clauses, and still some other commas in other places. But you get my drift.
actually ' can represent belonging too.
So it is the cat's shit. As the ' here represents belonging.
If you went through any decent elementary schooling, you should have known the difference 10 years ago. But since you have a "Breaking Bad" avatar, I won't make a big deal out of this.
Not everyone here speaks English as a first language. Personally I find that the internet a great way to make proper grammar less what you leave at school, and more what you make a habit out of. Depends who you're talking to though, I can't guarantee proper grammar and spelling if you're talking to 12 year old Xbox Live gamers.
Also, it's not 80's, or 80s. It's the '80s, the apostrophe shortening it from 1980s to '80s in the same sense that 'would not' is shortened to wouldn't.
The cat ate its shit
The cat ate it's shit
The first one is correct, the second one is saying that "The cat ate it is shit", or "The cat ate. It's shit"
I see all of you making this mistake. I am just surprised you haven't learned this when studying English.
James reminded me of another one, the "could of" syndrome. It's incorrect to say "could of", but correct to say "could have". Could've is could have.
I actually learned this from 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' book series, lol.
This is stupid. Everyone here knows which is which, they just choose not to or THEY MAKE MISTAKES.

Remember to put commas inside quotes.
I'm taking this one way too seriously: Allowed/aloud.
Hitler died guizes. He can't hurt your nazi spelling these days.
And I'm sure it's their not thier.
One that always makes my mother seethe is take and bring. I often say things like, "I'm going to bring the camera with me tomorrow..." when I should be saying "I'm going to take the camera with me tomorrow..."
At least, I think it's that way round; correct me if I'm wrong.
Korrect mei eef i'm rong.
Tomato, Tomatoe, Potato, Potatoe.
Who cares.
When people mix up "its and it's", it causes my reading to slow down and I have to re-read it. But now I feel more stupid because when I was 15 this was easy. Facepunch is dumbing me down. Although I still know the differences, I start to feel concerned that the possessive "its" is beginning to look wrong since I see it being abused so badly here every day.
I tend to capitalize It and It's. I don't know why.
from the anti-gravity thread, "UFO's"
unidentified flying object's :downs:

all of these make baby dinosaurs cry tears of blood

also nice bump
The mods really should make everyone download a spell checker and make bad spelling//grammar a bannable offence.
I hate people who spam ex dees and other emoticons and capitalize evey word. Or who type xD at the end of their every sentence.
