wow this is the stupidest argument ever
Yet you're still here arguing. Why? Could it be that I actually have a point?
Please tell me, before this "genre" became popular what was the term that people were using to explain the maps that played on the same concept?
They weren't calling it dotas if that's what you're saying.
They weren't calling it dotas if that's what you're saying.
"Hey dude, want to play some DOTA with me?" "Yeah bro!"
It was a term used to describe the custom maps that had the same concept and the same gameplay.

Good for that but it's not 2005 anymore you nitwit.
Uh I think we called it by the map name. Doesn't matter if it was a dota clone, we didn't call them dotas. Seriously this is the most pointless argument.
arts
ARTS was coined by Gaben when he needed to fit Dota2 into a genre. Still, it makes more sense than MOBA.
Multi-player Online Battle Arena. Shit, that could be any multi-player game.

I still think DOTA is a more fitting term than MOBA.

Yeah, it didn't have an S at the end dipwad. It's called DOTA. Defense of the Ancients.
ummm arts wasn't coined by gabe
I don't get you. The first thing you say in this thread is you straight up don't get the genre, but then have the audacity to go on and on about what the genre should even be called? Why do you have to prove a "point" about something you clearly know shit all about?

Just because I don't understand what the hype and fun-factor about the game is doesn't meant I know jack about the game. I don't need to enjoy playing to know something about it. I didn't know you had to be a movie director to criticize movies. I played this shit before it was even called MOBA. Get on my level.
so have i

Then you should understand that it's fine to address the genre as DOTA. I don't see the term MOBA or ARTS fitting of the genre. Valve trademarked the name to gain the market edge so that other companies can't refer to their games as a DOTA game therefor the terms MOBA and ARTS were coined. Seriously, how hard is this to comprehend. If I was to call LoL a DOTA-like you would understand that I'm talking about the genre. You're the idiots that started arguing about semantics in the first place.
Are you even being serious at this point? You're the one who went on about the semantic bullshit. You can call the game whatever the fuck you want, but like you said you played the game back before it was called a moba, which was how long ago? I'm guessing it was years by know, which makes whatever you knew completely outdated information. You can keep sticking by your ill informed opinion, but you're literally living in the past with this shit. If the genre evolves, so should the name.
reedbo it would have worked if you just stopped after your second post
you could almost come off as a funny dude

Yeah sure, BeardyDuck was the first to correct my statement about calling LoL DOTA. Semantics aside, MOBA isn't a fitting name for the genre as any multiplayer game where people fight each other is a MOBA. At least with the term DOTA you understand that the gameplay is similar if not the same as the original defense of the ancients maps. I'm not living in the past with anything, I'm describing the genre with a name that is more fitting. All of you are the spergs throwing a fit about what I call your game, even if it's not the "accepted" term it's still the most fitting in my opinion. I can call a mac a PC because that's what it is. Why can't I call LoL a DOTA-like even if that's what it is?

Because I care about ratings? If I did so I would have stopped a long time ago with all of the kids giving me boxes because I insulted their game.

who cares about ratings
why did you continue to post just to say "this isn't a, it's b" when we already know it isn't

Because I'm not calling LoL Dota2 I'm calling it a DOTA game. Christ, why are all of you so bad at reading?

it's not a dota game though
the only dota game is in DOTA

It's only a more fitting name if you're already familiar with the genre. And anyone savvy enough to know how to play these games are already going to know the difference. If anything saying Dota to a person who contextually has no idea what the fuck any of that shit is would be even more lost. Like I said you can call it whatever the fuck you want I really could give a shit, but if you're trying to actually describe it to people, saying everything is a derivative of dota, no one really gives a fucking shit. I may as well call any modern shooter a counter-strike-like. Should I call pong a tennis-like, because that's sort of what it is right? What about any sport involving you kick a ball a kick-like? If you're going to be like that you can call anything a something-like, but people make up actual terms so dumbasses like yourself can't argue about dumb shit like this. It's called what it's called, and you being wrong and refusing to think any other way doesn't make it more right.

why are you so bad at realizing how objectively wrong you are
moba is the type of genre, like RTS, FPS, MMO, fuck.
DOTA is DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS where you defend ancients or some shit. in league, there's just towers and dudes. there's no ancients. so by your logic we should call league "DOT"
fuck WHAT ARE YOU EVEN ON ABOUT?
[editline]27th February 2013[/editline]
actually this just in: all fps games are now a "wolfenstein"

fuck this
im going to go play a f1 nascar game
reedbo, by your logic this game might as well be called DOTN: Defence of the Nexus', or the genre itself called AoS after the first of it's kind.
MOBA is the accepted name for the genre, get your head around it.
I believe they're called DOOM games.
But honestly you've got to be fucking retarded to name a genre by the first or most popular game to spawn clones.
No, I think you're missing the point. I'm not calling LoL Dota, the game valve made, I'm calling it a Defense of the Ancients game. They're both based off the same principle: Control heroes, break enemies defenses and kill their towers (IE: Ancients). Sure I could call it a MOBA but I'm not incorrect in calling it a DOTA game either.
that's like calling all dubstep music Skrillex. surely that's not right?
