it's only because some people on this forum are willing to have intellectual conversations about things like this. and i'm happy it's that way.

i know about the particle accelerators and how they can send atoms close to the speed of light. What im saying is that people are using "read some books on this" as a fact, and are denying any other possibilities
I can't be assed to read everyone else's posts, but really;
Time is a measurement. It isn't anything tangible. Is a "meter" or a "mile" real? It might cover or include things that are real within its measurement, but in itself it means nothing at all, although it has a basis for its existence. A year on Earth = the time it takes for the Earth to complete an entire orbit around our Sun. Were we on a different planet, and used this same idea, a year could mean 300 'years' (Our years) due to the time it takes for this different planet to complete the same.
It's all very meaningless but well-defined nonetheless.

Perhaps you should've been assed.

It wasn't a troll thread, I thought about trolling on the first post of this page. Although this thread was going so well I had to snip it.

look up special relativity
To anyone still doubting the existence of time experiments have proved that time dilation exists, and hence, time must be some real phenomena, not something we've made up.
Atomic clocks put in ever increasing orbits run 'faster' than their counterparts in lower orbits (and these things are INCREDIBLY precise).
Muons that are created in the upper atmosphere due to collisions of solar radiation with particles in the upper atmosphere frequently reach Earth which they most certain should NOT under normal circumstances due to having an INCREDIBLY short half-life. Yet... they still reach us down here in sizable quantities.
Why? Time dilation. The muons travel at relativistic speed upon creation and, in their frame of reference (the frame that counts when we're discussing the lifetime of the particle) time is moving much slower than normal. This allows them to exist for a longer period of time in OUR frame of reference before decaying, hence, they reach the surface of the Earth.
Oh man I cannot keep up with you fuckers, there are too many theories and shit going on for me to take in. Have fun with your conversation though.

No that would be "Do seconds actually exist?"
You're confusing measurements with the physical qualities they measure.

Ah alright then.

we're not denying other scientific possibilities simply by discussing them. just because you make an educated guess about something in the scientific community doesn't mean you're trying to smash every other contradictory educated guess out of existence. you're simply observing the world around you and suggesting something that is likely to cause what you saw.
and theories are theories, sure; but you have to keep in mind that theories are based off of important observations and experiment.
Lets just all sit back and wait for aVoN to come to the rescue.

string theory isn't really related at this point in the conversation. it's really about quantum theory and relativity at this point.
This thread makes me want to play Crash Bandicoot 3
Time is an artificial construct, devised by humanity to mark the passage from day to night. Your watches might as well be stuck at pencil and quarter to cheese.

Was a joke about unified theory :'(
Just some numbers on the whole muon decay thing.
The average lifetime of a muon is about 2.2 microseconds (more specifically it's: 2.19703*10^-6 seconds).
Distance traveled is equal to the speed of an object, multiplied by time. So, our time is the half-life of one muon, and the speed is gonna be... let's say 0.99c (or 0.99*3*10^8 m/s).
(2.19703 * (10^(-6)) * (0.99 * 3.0 * (10^8)) = 652.51791 (metres).
The atmosphere is about 100km thick, or 100000 metres. There's no way in hell muons should ever reach us, but they do.
Time dilation, biatches.
*generic post implying time is in our heads and doesn't exist, ignoring the 30 other times it's been shown otherwise in this thread*

that flew right over my head i'm sorry.

I wish bad movies made me think about life
I wish bad movies made me think about life
It wasn't a bad movie.
I hate the paradox where you kill a family member, cease to exist, but then you never went in time so they are alive, but then you have gone back still to kill them etc.
I mean like if you go back in time and died would you just become yourself in said time period. No you would die. Or would you cease to exist as yourself but your younger self would continue to live.no because you just killed your younger self Or is time just a measurement we just use and space is only existent but we can only perceive what's going on forwards in time although if we could alter space we could easily go back eons ago.there is no such thing as time travel Another thought, is time a butterfly effect? Like we went back in time with our brothers and sisters and killed our grandfather would we all cease to exist.yes Just some thoughts I am having and was wondering if you guys could assist me.
What happened to the science sub-forum?
These threads make me rage.
In short
Aye, time is real, it's a fucking dimension for fuck sake, if that doesn't make it real then nothing is.
