what you all seem to be forgetting is that time is man-made.
we even put a measurement on i.
:downs:
automerge :ninja: damnit
Time is similar to the rails that push a trolley car forward on it's journey as time pushes the stream of events that are to take place in the universe forward.
yes, yes, it's a extremely gross, arcane, and ugly video that compresses string theory into something that it really isn't, but it's a video that is good for referencing the basic concepts of the theory to people who don't want to spend a lot of time researching.
The "Ten Dimensions" video is not about string theory. At all. It's more like a thought exercise.
Take a look at this:

This thread: Disregard everything except Johnny's and bravehat's posts.
And billeh!'s.
Actually, a second is defined as the time it takes for light to travel a meter I believe.
Please please please tell me you're joking. Seriously.
EDIT
That has to be the stupidest thing I've read in weeks.
The real definition:
the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom

Because they are open-minded individuals who actually accepts that other theories might be plausible instead of calling it wrong just because it's different. If you try to be really philosophical about time you'll quickly find out that other than the usual theory of time being a line you'll see that the most reasonable theory is time being artificial. No humans = No time (At least no indicator of time except for the sun, but that thing changes on different planets, and I don't think animals would care about time) gah
And therein lies the fucking problem.
Time is not a PHILOSOPHICAL concept, it is a PHYSICAL concept.
If you want to be a time based philosopher go ahead, but we are discussing time as a dimensional coordinate.
If time didn't exist, we wouldn't age. Then again, technically speaking, "time" is another label we humans put on the world to better understand it.
Huh, then it was meter that was defined as the distance times travels in a vacumm in about 1⁄300,000,000~ of a second. And if you've read this thread that can't possibly be the stupidest thing you've read in weeks.
[editline]10:44PM[/editline]
I am sorry I don't know the exact definition of time mom.
I'm pretty sure when Napoleon developed the metric system, he wasn't thinking about light.
Time only really exists on planets.
When you're flying through space, time really doesn't matter or exist because you're not revolving around the sun.
i think therefore i am mofucka
Actually, a second is defined as the time it takes for light to travel a meter I believe.
Light, fastest thing in the universe, coming at ya at 2.2 miles PER HOUR!

No really. If you had thought about it you would never ever think "a second is defined as the time it takes for light to travel a meter". It would mean that you could visibly see light move along your room walls when you turn on the light. It would take it several seconds to reach all of your room, you could see it creep along the walls.
I am sorry I don't know the exact definition of time mom.
Ooh you really hurt my feelings now by referring to me as your mom because I corrected you. I'm in tears.
I'm pretty sure when Napoleon developed the metric system, he wasn't thinking about light.
The definitions for the SI units are all kinda weird. The units were formed earlier with different definitions, the definitions have just gotten more accurate. I'm pretty sure all SI units, except 1kg, have a definition based on physical laws. For 1kg, they still have a "prototype" in France. All other 1kg weights are compared to that and calibrated correctly.
I'm pretty sure he wasn't thinking about the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom for seconds either.
...you're alright Yahnich.
Actually, You do travel In time when you are sleeping.
Actually, You do travel In time when you are sleeping.
Kindly explain.
And don't gimme none of that science bullshit, you motherfuckers be lying and getting me pissed.
Work is dependent upon the existence of time.

ahahahahaha
that was awesome

now tell me that isn't real
I time travel every day! Just very slowly like everyone else!

This is not real.
You told me to say it... :C
actually the definition of time is not whatever cycles cesium-132 does, that's just describing the mechanism for atomic clocks, which measure time really really accurately. time itself is not defined by cesium.

Nobody said that. We were talking about the definition of one second.

Nobody better to explain it.
Nobody said that. We were talking about the definition of one second.
just kidding. im going to die now bye.
yep, eleven
not sure what those all are though. there is an older video on string theory, however:
That was the longest 11 minutes of my life, swear I drifted off into another dimension.
Also, some sound effects in that remind me of Rayman :D
Time travel exists.
Actually, sleeping is time-traveling to the futuerer :science:
So is being in a mode of transport as you are betting from point to point quicker than the human body can, yet things are moving at the same speeds inside and out of that car, etc
This thread shouldn't have even reached page 2.
This thread shouldn't have even reached page 2.
actually considering the good conversation that came out of this thread i disagree
[editline]10:48AM[/editline]
it's a valid scientific discussion
Time is a concept created by man. It exists naturally in the universe, but man coined the name and facts that we do know. You can only travel forward in time though.
Just to remind you that it is a film.
Time is a "man made" Idea, Past being things that have already happened, present being whats happening now, and future being things that haven't happened yet
