Basically everything is done in flash now because of costs
Flash has nothing to do with how an animation looks, It's just a tool, it's all the artists. I'm fairly certain that most of those are still drawn in pencil before being brought into the software anyway.
Eh, something about these modern Cartoon Network shows just rubs me up the wrong way. I don't know, maybe it's just my imagination, but it always seems like they're trying to be so.... snarky... and cutting edge. I dunno, it just feels like noodly armed western slice of life anime to me.

Not saying it's bad, or that you're awful for liking it or anything, I just don't get it. Feels like it's pandering to this audience that i'm just not a part of.
i think it's because a lot of these animators who are making these shows are reeally young compared to past generations. everyone who's anyone making animated cartoons nowadays used to work on either two shows: flapjack and chowder. ever since then a ton of animators came out of it. pen ward (adventure time), natasha allegri (bee and puppycat), alex hirsch (gravity falls), pat mchale (over the garden wall), jg quintel (regular show) pretty much all got their start as storyboard artists for either chowder or flapjack (minus allegri, she started on adventure time iirc.) mind you, they were all around 21-25 when they started that, and those shows were about 2007-2009, so these guys started their ideas young. i mean, hell, alex hirsch ended up with a ton of people on his show who have their roots in the internet (homestar runner's second half, matt chapmap worked on gravity falls until reciently, and the sister of neil cicierega, emmy cicierega, does art for the show, and because of that neil has done some work for them as well, including the original theme song.)
all in all, the current way things are going, we're growing up in an age where what you described is the current generation (at least one half of it, as is most generations.) that generation went on to dominate western animation and pop culture. internet references and such. but yeah, i get where you're coming from. i just hope this gave you some context on it.
[sp]opinion: i'm totally into the tumblrisms and how current cartoons are going cause i like their quirks and i feel the last generation of chowders was getting stale (though i love the return to form with stuff like over the garden wall which gives me a serious flapjack vibes. could use more of that originality.) I also personally believe that cartoons are currently becoming more mature and taking themselves a lot more seriously. i just hope it doesnt go right over the edge and becomes too serious. we're in a nice bubble, for now.[/sp]

also most if not all professional cartoons use toonboom because flash is literally garbage regardless of what adobe wants you to believe.
You haven't the faintest fucking idea what you're talking about.
Regular Show is the 80's: The cartoon and centers on the first days after highschool and relationships
Adventure Time is literally modern youth coming of age meets D and D 2.5 edition
Clarence is 90's: the cartoon and deals with no relationship anything and is pretty much an animated sitcom for kids
Gumball is literally the thing you said it's not: modern urban life and navigating a diverse world
Steven Universe is quite literally about being accepted while being different and learning how to get along, along with being feminsim: the cartoon.

That's not true, you can clearly see the difference between flash and drawn animation.

I said it's different, I don't know why you think that this means it's bad.
Gumball's animation is on a whole 'nother level though compared to other CN shows

Regular show is great because Mordecai and Rigby are just trying to do normal shit or cheat their way out and everything just goes to hell.
i think the humor can be a bit annoying sometimes and i dislike a lot of the musical segments but overall i think it's a solid show. i like the DBZ inspiration and the story is pretty interesting. i generally don't like the self contained episodes that don't have much influence on the overall plot.
i don't know if i'd necessarily recommend the show 'cause i feel like it wasn't immediately engaging and i kinda had to force myself through a lot of the less interesting parts, but it does have some really good moments and a cool world.

Definitely, There are a few episodes that are pretty alright but the rest is pure greatness. I love it.
I can't really get into Steven Universe because of all of the tumblr shit and how it's apparently ~deep~ and ~existential~ and ~emotional~
I want to watch a fucking cartoon. Same shit started up with Adventure Time so I quit that bullhonkey too.

But that's what the show is, he just doesn't like it
my girlfriend got me watching this show and I have not regretted it at all, I binged it in a matter of days and it did a good job of keeping me interested
I'm not gonna go out and call it the best thing ever, but I definitely think its worth a watch if you're into cartoons/animation. The show is really positive and sends some pretty great messages but isn't obnoxious about it, and the enviroments look great. I'm also a huge fan of the soundtrack:

I follow a few blogs on tumblr that reblog shit about Steven's Universe, it's not even that bad
Over analysing a show is healthy and brings out discussion, of course it can get ridiculous but I've never had a problem with it.
I over analysed Moral Orel and joined into conversations with people on tumblr, made gifs and explored the deep nature it was portraying. People do the same for everything
The fanbase is healthy and doesn't seem toxic like others I've seen so far, so honestly this isn't a problem
could you imagine being an adult who watches shows made for CHILDREN and taken them this seriously
Cartoons aren't made just for children anymore, they're made for a general audience, any age can sit down and watch whatever is on CN without feeling excluded about it. Just because [AS] targets adults and Boomerang targets adolescents doesn't mean CN just targets kids, CN targets any ages.

the show it's from is called Motorcity, by the same guys who made Megas XLR. Though you should probably know that it got cancelled after 1 20 episode season and kinda ends with a bunch of loose ends

Speaking of cartoons that went above and beyond

It started as a regular monster of the week show (or rather magical item of the week) but it heavily focused on character development after getting the fanbase hooked, even going as far as [sp]turning one of the characters from the main team evil for a period of time[/sp]
I don't remember seeing anything like it before, a kids cartoon where the characters change and develop throughout the series instead of going tabula rasa in each new episode.
That's not true, you can clearly see the difference between flash and drawn animation.
In the hands of a capable artist, that's not true at all. You can do traditional animation in flash completely without using any sort motion tweening, skeletal animation, and other things that gives it that "Flash" look. It is entirely up to the artists. It's like all those people who say Unity games look the same.
Besides, other 2D animation software like ToonBoom have tweening and those other features too so they're not just a Flash thing. A lot of animations you'd immediately identify as Flash might not even be flash at all.
Steven Universe's a pretty good show. It's pretty comfy.
Fanbase is getting out of control, though. Trying to stay away from all that. The moment gem OC became a thing, that was when the alarm bell started to ring.

You don't get it because your only experience with the show is from the fanbase and not the actual show itself. Or you just really aren't the kind of audience to appreciate shows like that.
Pretty much my experience with Homestuck
Homestuck fans can be totally off putting but the first few (years?) that thing was going on before it developed a real fanbase FP was sucking its metaphorical dick and I knew there had to be something good in there.
I don't really watch SU or AT or anything like that but from the handful of episodes I've seen IMO they are some of the best and most creative cartoon concepts to come out in nearly a decade. They develop fanbases because they do what the heaps of shit cartoons in the mid 2000's didn't do: have actual depth and interesting things to glean when you read between the lines, without losing that "cartoon charm". Basically everything that everyone loves about Pixar movies being great to watch as an adult and a kid except in a show with a creative premise.
IMO Cartoon Network has really been on top of their game recently, and the guys they have in charge of SU/AT are easily some of their best cartoonists in a long time. The old stuff in the early 2000's and late 90's was also good, but in a totally different (and much simpler) way. It kind of reminds me of a cross between what makes good anime good in storytelling/action/design techniques, mixed with what makes good western cartoons good in terms of format, art style, pacing, etc.
What is this, Xavier Renegade Angel?

This show needs a successor. Or continuation. Or something.
There was something about Xavier that really got me somehow, and it bugs me that I can't find anything like it. I also loved its ugly almost machinima style animation.
Steven Universe is like all the bad parts of Adventure Time moved into their own show
