That's not true, you can clearly see the difference between flash and drawn animation.
That was animated in flash.
You have the right idea, but you're using the wrong terminology.
Flash doesn't make cartoons look worse, what you're thinking of isn't flash animation vs hand-drawn animation, it's tween animation vs frame-by-frame animation.
Example of tween animation:

Tween animation is animation that doesn't use a series of drawings to create motion, but rather each character is set up into pre-set positions and the program then translates the difference in-between those positions and creates a smooth but simple motion.
An example, for a character's walking animation, an artist might have only drawn 4 frames of the character in different stages of walking, and through the use of tween animation in flash, he can turn those 4 frames into an entire smooth walking animation instantly with little effort on his part.
That is why cartoons that look like Johnny Test and 6 Teen are so easy and cheap to produce, it takes very little effort on the artist's part to actually animate.

Example of frame-by-frame:

While the second one is indeed hand-drawn, the point is the tool does not determine the quality of the work, it's how one chooses to use it.
Gumball's animation is on a whole 'nother level though compared to other CN shows
This is why I fucking love this show. All CN shows are experimenting with something. It sucks that the advertisements choose to represent the smallest inconsequential aspects of these shows. As an animator, I firmly believe we're in a golden age. The people running these shows actually have a voice. There was a dark zone in 2000-2011 where most family programming was autonomous and completely corporate, only existing to fill a hole and keep narrow demographics invested.
could you imagine being an adult who watches shows made for CHILDREN and taken them this seriously
Ha. Could you imagine being completely blind to the fact that no one creates things solely for others? The people who have dedicated their lives to creating this shit aren't doing it to fill a demo like I mentioned above. They're doing it for themselves too. They're doing it because they fucking want to.
Steven Universe is like all the bad parts of Adventure Time moved into their own show
explain?
A lot of people jumped off of Adventure time when it became serial and not procedural and characters became the focus. Some people just don't seem to accept serial non-action oriented cartoons.

I so happen to love both SU an AT, and while I think SU handles story arcs way better than AT I would never leave what was the first great show I watched on CN after a years-spanning personal hiatus from the network.
I think the biggest similarities I'm seeing in modern cartoons is their love for randumb humor.
Adventure time literally makes up words and expects them to be funny.
In terms of art I actually think they've improved.
imagine being over the age of 12 and still watching cartoon network
Imagine being over the age of 12 and giving enough of a fuck about what other people watch that you try to shit up a thread about it.
Imagine having such a crippling lack of self awareness that you insult a dead guy who committed suicide just for working on a game you don't like.

You sure? I always thought the type of speech on the show made all the characters a lot more grounded, which adds to the charm. All the performances sound super candid and natural. Especially in AT. It's not funny, but it's not a joke.
explain?
Mostly the really awkward Rebecca Sugar songs with really weirdly-timed lyrics. Those songs really plagued Adventure Time for a while, those episodes are borderline unwatchable because how cringeworthy they are
So I'm glad that stuff is in its own show now. As well as a lot of the tumblr-pandery stuff
I'm sure there were a lot of grown ass men back in the day who really really liked watching Ed Edd'n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Cow and Chicken, there's nothing new about older people watching kids cartoons.
I do think the massive hard on most of reddit and tumblr have for these cartoons is very overblown though, If you're older than 16 and have tumblr accounts dedicated to Stephen Universe, Adventure Time and Gumball then you probably need to find new hobbies.

I mean everyone's entitled to their opinions but you're literally the first person I've ever seen to call those songs "awkward" and calling them "plagues"

If he's talking about the same person that sung/wrote the intro to Adventure Time, then I can understand where "awkward" stems from. They're almost too "quirky" sounding to the point where it's borderline unbearable to listen to.

Sugar had nothing to do with the intro, that was all the creator of the show Pendleton Ward's work
I haven't really checked out "Over The Garden Wall", what do you guys think of it?

I don't understand what I'm supposed to be looking at here.
I've been checking back on this thread just to collect reasons on why people dislike the show, and this is what I've got so far:
- Artstyle is too similar to other shows like Gumball. Gumball.
- Tumblr
- Not Adventure Time
Okay so fair warning check my avatar duh I like the show.
There's a fuck ton of talk about many similar concepts when people are considering or swearing off a cartoon, let alone Steven Universe. Some of these phrases and ideas include "pandering to X demographic," "being cringe-y," "taking itself too seriously / up its own ass," "being full of lol rand-dumb humor," "CLEARLY NOT A KIDS SHOW LOOK AT THIS ADULT REFERENCE," "the fandom is ruining / ruined show X," and so on.
Take a step back. Look at these works from a completely different angle to start with. Why do so many of these shows look similar, for instance? It's because many working on these shows and in the modern Cartoonist industry are close friends, and travel from show to show, leaving their influences on it. Adventure Time lost one of my favorite storyboarders in Rebecca Sugar, whose work I was always particularly fond of after the shocking "I Remember You" episode of Adventure Time. This was the first episode that struck an emotional cord with me, since before then I watched it solely for immature jokes getting past censors. I found she was also the author behind one of my favorite webcomic shorts, "Don't Cry for Me, I'm Already Dead" (found here). She had a way of evoking a response in me that I haven't seen personally in many pieces of media to date. Something about it was so human, and so flawed, that it reminded me of myself. Of course when I heard she was getting her own show I wanted to see it ASAP.
The show was just okay. It didn't blow me away, but it was VERY well produced: a stellar voice cast (including the talented Estelle as Garnet), impressive story flow for 11 minutes which I'm sure Rebecca honed plenty while working on Adventure Time, beautiful background art by her own brother, and relaxing, playful music by the now married composer couple Aivi & Sura. This wasn't just about a cartoon, it felt like a family coming together to share in their love with everyone else. It wasn't a knockout cartoon, but it was very honest and earnest about the way it was presented and what it wanted to show others. It was the first show I've seen that truly felt human, like it went beyond trying to be entertaining but it tried to show you a piece of everyone who worked on it.
It got better. It is full of anime tropes and shout-outs, from Utena to Dragon Ball Z to the fucking Enigma of Amigara Fault, because the storyboarders, Rebecca included, are huge fucking dorks. Rebecca Sugar literally has drawn Ed Edd and Eddy yaoi, a self-insert Invader Zim character, and even more embarrassingly stupid stuff (which you can find preserved online somewhere if you really care but why would you, she was like 16 when making this and it's fucking fan art trash). It's a flaw, but they don't hold it back in shame, they use their flaws to tell new and fascinating stories about being comfortable with yourself. It is easy to say they are pandering to Tumblr people, because that's shorthand for sensitive, emotional, and empathetic people who range from completely normal (the ones everyone ignores) to batshit insane (let's laugh at them; no really, those people need help but still lol). When something makes you feel emotion, it's okay to say so. The internet still has a very polarized opinion on how tough it should be acting at any given time. If fucking T-Pain can tweet about his feelings, I think it's okay that internet nobodies comment openly on their feelings, too. You know, besides the completely negative ones which they are never afraid to voice.
The fans suck, sure, like literally anything. I love my dear friends to pieces, but when they start talking about Game of Thrones I want to hurl myself out a window. It is annoying to me to listen to! I understand on a basic level that my friends are having a LOT of fun, and it makes me annoyed and sad that I am not sharing that with them. But I feel too lazy to start watching the show now. This is true of anything. I heard so many "I AM GROOT" references I thought I'd never watch Guardians of the Galaxy. It's just how people perceive other's excitement for that work. The more they love it (and measure it as good), the more they'll talk about it to death (WOW LOOK AT YOU POSTING, RAMEN) and the more people will react in opposition to it.
Ultimately, the show is a beautiful collection of talented folks coming together to talk about how comfortable they are about themselves and what they've accomplished. The main take away of the show is the same message, about finding yourself and being comfortable with that. It is just hidden under the surface of aliens fighting each other and crying. A LOT. This is why it personally pains me to see others write off the show based on misunderstandings or because of specific little issues. It's impossible to get everyone to like it, hey, that's totally valid. You can just personally dislike the songs, the art style, the animations, or so many other things about it, and that's perfectly fair. It is not perfect, it is simply a flawed show about flawed people, and that's all there is to it.

Like, also I'm really sorry for the mega carepost. I'd love to discuss with people more via PM or here if they want to. I really love this show a ton, and I just figured why the fuck not share some of that love. Basically, if you feel like you need convincing that Steven Universe is a super well-produced, visually distinct show, look at this (SPOILERS) short video of some highlights.
Also like lol this is all in response to a video from SDCC that I'm not even going to watch because it contains spoilers for new episodes.

I'll never get why some people seem to think cartoons = for kids only. When I watch stuff, I do it to leave behind the BS of the real world for a bit and what better way than watching something like Regular Show.
