it's a known fact that samey, one-dimensional characters make for a better show
clearly money hungry CN executives forced their creators to make diverse characters in order to appeal to a small niche of tumblr SJW's
Curse those SJW's for forcing their brutal reign of interesting and unique characters upon us! I demand the same bland characters I've seen in every show! More Johnny Test! More modern Simpsons! More modern Spongebob!
I don't get why you'd specifically have to bring up my own work in this, but sure, Senpai Club is not an extension of me in any way. It's a comedy show that I make with a friend, and it's a parody of anime. It has no agendas or concerns beyond "haha anime is funny". The ideas and concepts aren't something that only I could come up with but you need a good sense of comedic timing and such to pull it off well. A work being an extension of the creator or not has nothing to do with the quality of a project or how much heart you put into it. And what cartoons are? I can't think of any cartoon that aims to be any of that, other than fine art stuff or some really tiny indie things
I just mean that it's unreasonable to claim that a network cartoon made collaboratively by a huge team and filtered through a bunch of executives is in any way a cry for help or an extension of anyone. Enjoy Stephen Universe if you want to, but don't claim that it's more than it is
I share your utilitaristic view of art. I agree that a lot of people make all possible excuses to look ~deep~.
On the other hand, not everyone does. The point is that as an artist it is impossible to make something that is devoid of oneself.
First of all, let's say that skill and heart are two different things. Heart doesn't make anything good, but it can make something good better. Skill is what defines a work in its quality, but unless you're rehashing the same thing for the nth time, any work will have a certain amount of Heart, or personality, or whatever you want to call it.
The simple existence of Senpai Club reflects you. If you made a clone with your same exact amount of skill, but different personality, would he make Senpai Club? Maybe he'd make Fish Jim Circleshirt, a parody of western cartoons. Or maybe he'd make a non-parody cartoon. Or maybe he'd ditch cartoons and start making comics.
To make a really clear example, the Simpsons. The first few seasons of the Simpsons mostly focused on Bart and Homer. The writers could easily write things about a kid or a father, but it was hard for them to work with Lisa and Marge, which were completely different characters.
Maybe Steven Universe is shit. I don't know. I'm speaking generally.
you mean the video or the fights about the show
The song. The people that want to be negative about a wonderful cartoon they've probably never watched can go back to /co/.
Why do people think that when diverse characters are included in media they are "forced" or the creators felt "obligated to pander to SJWs"? You do know that there are people who genuinely enjoy and want to make characters who are different?
Problem is shows like this and Bee & Puppycat feel so checklisty
It's like they looked at a list of "what does tumblr like" and made sure to check every one of them, and THEN made up a story based on that

"I complain about shows I don't watch!" - Eric95
Actually why the fuck am I trying to argue with you, you think that FOV sliders and decent framerates are pretentious nerd bullshit
This is pretty much what I wanted to say
I mean even the characters are forced to be as different as possible when it comes to race and body type
Yeah a show that has characters that are diverse and fairly well written must be ultra pretentious SJW pandering bullshit! Because Tumblr SJW's are such a vast lucrative market  .
This is pretty much what I wanted to say

So you'd rather all characters be the same?

Not really, considering that whenever a certain character goes through character development and shows more complex emotions tumblr suddenly hates them

It's like you're just BARELY about to understand what marketing to a demographic is, and then you shit all over yourself in an attempt to yell about TUMBLR PEOPLE.
What makes the demographic that inhabits Tumblr and other social media sites any less valid than say, the one that likes ironic anime trope videos?

That isn't what I'm talking about at all
I use tumblr, most of my audience is on tumblr. I'm not yelling about "tumblr people" or "SJWs" or anything like that. I just think Steven Universe feels overly pandery, and that it cheapens it. There's nothing wrong with marketing to a demographic, but there's a line where it just turns into pure pandering and in my opinion Steven Universe treads dangerously close to it, all the way down to the pacing, sound design and color palette.
Obviously there's nothing wrong with diversity and pastels and all that. I'm a fan of that aesthetic too, I've made a bunch of pastely colorful stuff and I want to have diverse characters in my work. It's just that to me, the way Steven Universe was put together feels a bit forced. It feels too aggressively marketed toward my demographic, and I can't enjoy it because of that. Then again, it's a children's cartoon.
I hate steven universe but i think it's just because it doesn't offer anything that I want out of media or animation.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you want out of media or animation?
