Going to watch "Modern Times" (1936) tonight.
Any good? I'm usually a Chaplin fan anyway.
Yeah. It's his best beside City Lights and Vampyros Lesbos.
I also loved the Great Dictator, but Modern Times is just really really awesome.
Yeah. It's his best beside City Lights and Vampyros Lesbos.
Dude... Gold Rush and Great Dictator were so good.

Also I watched Blue Velvet.
I have to say... there are aspects of it that are inspired. There is plenty to talk about here because clearly the director wants to convey something.
But in the end, we're experiencing the movie as a whole and I have to say that it was underwhelming compared to Elephant Man and Eraserhead that I watched a few days ago.
That being said, there is FAR too many genres merging together which bring the underlying "Blue Velvet" concept to be less meaningful.
Seriously, it's artistic.. fair enough, but it's also a high-school drama, mystery, crime, gangster, psychological thriller, surreal film noir movie.
I can't even explain... but I think there is more to this movie than I'm talking about. It needs another watch to get the symbolism.
for now it's a 7.7/10
The Crucible 9/10

The film gets better every time you watch it, it wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd viewing that it "clicked" with me.
And as far as the symbolism goes, I always thought Blue Velvet was Lynch's crowning achievement.
Eraserhead felt a bit too obvious to me at times, with certain scenes' meanings being easily decipherable whilst said scenes are still transpiring, whilst on the other hand stuff like Mullholland Drive initially seems to be ridiculously cryptic for the sake of being ridiculosly cryptic(I'm not saying these films are bad because they're not, MD is actually in my top 20).
Blue Velvet is perfectly balanced in that department. whilst still remaining complex, compelling and intelligent enough to reward repeated viewings.
Yeah, Blue Velvet has a LOT about it to think about. It's not just a "plain old, 80s thriller flick".
That being said, Eraserhead is my personal favourite experience of his so far.
Still haven't watched a David Lynch film. Mulholland Drive came free with a newspaper ages ago and I just found it the other day. Worth watching?
So far i've seen about 60 movies that without this thread i wouldn't know about
Keep em comin!

I enjoyed it.

It's pretty straightforward compared to Inland Empire.

Yeah sure check it out. Just don't expect to understand everything.

Also the last film i watched was the first hour of 2001: A Space Oddyssey before realising i was tired as fuck and went to bed nothing happened 5/10 will watch rest at the weekend and I expect the score to increase dramatically
just watched parts 1+2 of HORSE the band's earth tour. 3 and a bit hours of country hopping has given me a newfound respect for this band, I'll give it a 7/10 so far because as a documentary filmer the cameraman is a bit shit at some points. I still have 4 more parts to come though so that rating may change
Is "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" any good? watching that this Halloween with my little sister and I've never seen it.
It is awesome. Probably not appropriate for your little sister, depending on how young she is, but honestly, the musical is fantastic, and definitely one of Tim Curry's best roles as a Transexual Transvestite from Transylvania.

Eraserman and Elephant Man are only decent. Elephant is very "un-Lynch" except for some artsy details but it's a good moving story. Eraserhead is really funny and weird.
Blue Velvet is fucking BEAUTIFUL. wonderful combination of disturbing, hilarious, sad, scary, and very heartfelt. It's very dark but has a hopeful positive side to it. watch it before Mulholland Drive, which is similar (probably even better) but then goes straight into pure surrealism land.

it better increase :D
also, people should check out the tv show "Twin Peaks", I'm two episodes in and it's already looking like it can be up there with Lynch's best. Watch it or kill yourself.
Anyway, last film I saw was Naked, directed by Mike Leigh. That was certainly one of the bleakest experiences I've ever had in a film, yet at some points almost positive. I can't really summarise this film, I need to watch it again in a while. 8/10
She's 9.
I've already showed her "A Clockwork Orange" and she loved it. It's all good.
Just showed her all 6 Star Wars movies recently in the order they were made. "Return of the Jedi" is her favorite movie now.
wow that's a hardcore 9 year old girl, I was afraid to watch clockwork orange at age 14
I feel like a little bitch now in comparison

Superb, easily in my top 20.

Already saw it quite some time ago, didn't care much for it, still don't care much for it.
Decent, nothing more and nothing less.
Trainspotting is easily a 10/10, one of the few films I've watched that I can't find anything wrong with.
Trainspotting is easily a 10/10, one of the few films I've watched that I can't find anything wrong with.
I agree, it's just that I'm not in the habit of ever rating 10s.
9/10 is as high as it gets with me, probably because of the argument that a 10/10 would warrant a perfect movie and no movie is truly perfect and whatever.
a perfect movie doesn't equal a good movie, or a movie I even like , its just a movie that pays off everything it sets up.
in my opinion anyway.
It's just now that I typed that out that I realized how fucking retarded of a rule that is.
Trainspotting's one of my all-time favourites too. I gotta love the soundtrack. It really fits with the images on screen and they chose songs that aren't used in many other movies so it makes for a unique sound for the film.

Well that one scene really sucks.
We just finished watching Gone With The Wind in my film class. I didn't think I'd get into it but I really did. It was great. 9/10

I think ratings are pretty silly anyway. Looking at such a qualitative subject shouldn't be reduced down to a specific number. I just would like to see a well thought out opinion and a nice description of the movie to see if it's up my alley.

yea, I think of ratings as just a neat way to summarize how high something is on my list of personal favourites
The Social Network
8/10
Already seen this film a couple of times, but it gets better every time I watch it.
[sp]Zuckerberg's an asshole :v:[/sp]
The golden compass: 5/10. Watered down, but well acted. Should've kept the book's ending for a massive mood swing at the end.
They're made for kids, rusty.
I realise that, does that mean their stories are suddenly complex and adults should be rating them 10/10?
[editline]30th September 2011[/editline]
They're great for kids but that doesn't make what I said any less valid
Throne of Blood - 6/10
solid adaptation of Shakespeare by Kurosawa. Pretty light compared to Ran and not terribly engaging but visually beautiful.

if they'd kept the religious themes in, it would have been good. But they avoided the hell out of them for whatever reason
