• You don't get high the first time you smoke?

The first time you do any drug, you will probably get extremely high because you have no tolerance and no idea of how it will affect you. The reason that people often don't get high the first time they smoke weed is because they have no idea of what they're doing, so they don't properly absorb it. It's different for every piece, but the general process is: Inhale while burning the weed, covering the air intake hole (carb[uretor]/shotgun/etc.). When you're nearly out of room in your lungs, open the air hole to clear the chamber and move the last smoke bit of smoke into your lungs. Try to hold it in your lungs for up to 5 seconds.

Indeed, I'm absolutely certain I read a study a while back showing that around 90% of the cannabinoids are absorbed within the first 2 seconds.

Can't be arsed to dig through the entire internet for it, but from a quick google I found it is referenced on marijuana.com as well;
I've yet to find any real figures on THC absorption in the lungs. Some people say only 15% of inhaled marjiuana smoke is absorbed into the lungs (meaning 85% of the THC is exhaled). Other people say 85% of the THC is absorbed into the lungs, with 15% of the exhaled smoked being THC. I have always said 85% of the THC is absorbed into the lungs within the first seconds of inhalation, which is a safe number, but after some research here is what I've come to conlcude: Deep inhalation and breath-holding used in attempt to absorb more THC in the lungs only increases the absorption of tar and other carcinogens. A study done by a group of doctors in Canada (Dalhousie University) concluded that more than 90% of the THC is absorbed into the lungs within the first seconds of inhalation. Another study confirms this, but they put their figure at 95% absorption. The study also concluded that within the first hour of smoking marijuana, most of the THC is absorbed completely into the lungs (meaning your lungs don't immediately take in all of the THC at once, but over the course of an hour they take it all in). The complete elimination of any trace THC has been put at 53-55 hours, which could explain while some people experience a lingering high a couple days after smoking. An almost deja-vu high if you will. Conclusion: your lungs literally absorb 85-95% (average 90%) of the THC within the first second of inhalation; holding in a hit does nothing to increase the high, and any high experienced is either (a) placebo or (b) due to oxygen intoxication (meaning, breath really fast for 30 seconds and you'll get lightheaded and dizzy, that's oxygen intoxication). I forgot to add that the 5-15% of the THC that isn't absorbed is probably due to the THC loss in trace smoke and not your lungs inability to absorb a chemical. You don't see cigarette smokers taking a hit and holding it in for 10 seconds, they get that "buzz" literally in the first second of taking a hit.
Interesting how the THC takes an hour to absorb into your bloodstream from your lungs, i assumed it was near instant.
Indeed, makes me wonder if IV administration of the pure cannabinoids would mean a much more intense yet shorter high, or if the lung buffer corresponds with the amount of time it takes for the THC and CBD to pass the blood-brain-barrier. On a sidenote, it's funny how my first post is getting a sea of dumbs from lurkers and yet the second one, in which I provide a more detailed analysis and even studies to back-up my statement (being in fact the only one in this thread to do so), is somehow magically ignored.
i think when your new to it you just don't really know what you're looking for, like when you see first time smokers like staring into space all red eyed and they'll still say "i don't know if i'm high yet" even when they're clearly licked. Alot of the effects are quite subtle and i didn't notice some of them till atleast my second or third time
Yeah, interesting point you brought up but from personal experience I don't think it's true that it takes a couple of times to kickstart your cannabinoid receptors
Maybe it's that some people aren't born with the proper amount of receptors and therefore when introduced to weed they make more, however, it may be possible that Cannabis is so popular that all the people who have been introduced to weed, may have been predisposed to it somehow, or even when they were younger had caught a wiff that kickstarted those receptors by accident.

However many people have the required amount of initial cannabinoid receptors to get high, this is all individual, probably dependent on both genetic and environmental causes as the brain is constantly adapting.
I never had any trouble my first time, I figured out the process of smoking pretty much immediately and didn't feel much for the first 15-45 seconds so I figured it didn't work, till I suddenly got hit like a bus just ran into me. Good times.
i was told this again and again by my longtime friends who were deep into this world. So much so that when i tried my first time i went HARD. i think i took part in maybe 6 or 7 bowls or so, taking massive hits and holding them in for minutes. all I remember from that night is adopting the arm motions of a helicopter for entertainment, pudding and some blue planet.
I got really high my first time. Never been that high again though.
