Well even if we did know about them we wouldn't be able to physically contact them or meet them because as the OP said, they're millions of light years away, and nothing with mass can travel at the speed of light so millions of light years can be even longer to travel and reach us.
What makes you so certain there's no intelligent life in the Milky way? There's no proof against it. Furthermore, given the sheer number of star systems in our galaxy, it's more than just possible, it's likely.
We basically know that theres no intelligent life in the Milky Way because we know about every (probably) planet in the Milky Way and know their conditions. The only planets that even have a remote chance of supporting life are Earth and Mars. We have studied mars and theres no signs of intelligent life. INTELLIGENT, that doesn't mean that theres not life though.

ATM, I think around 400 planets have been discovered orbiting around 300 stars. (Please check, not sure)
The thing is, the Milky Way consists of around 150 billion stars.
I fucking dare you to say we've discovered 1/10th of the planets in the galaxy, or even 1/100th.
I dare you even more to say that we know those planets' conditions.
Also, we don't know what technology aliens have, they may have a thing the size of your fingernail that makes a stable wormhole on command.
This kids past threads speak for themselves:

though. No we haven't discovered every planet in the milky way, and no there are planets other than Mars and Earth that support life, Titan's ocean is believed to hold life.
and what makes you think all planets have to be like Earth to support life? there might be life on other planets that's drastically different than life on Earth
You shouldn't say that we can't go faster than the speed of light. Rather, that we can't go faster than the recorded max speed of light. Why make the distinction? Because we have been able to slow light down to about 36 m/s through the use of ultra cold and dense chambers.
The aliens could have sent robots to earth.
I watched a very imtresting documentry about aliens in area 51 comunicating with humans. It's an intiview with an alien but it dies at the end because of our world I guess but area 51 so top secret even the president doesn't have say over what goes on in there and if your caught in it
you get wiped of the earth everything about you is gone so if it's so top secret what are they hiding? Also they talked about there trading technology with the aliens for human stuff but it makes sense it's all kept low down as America want to become the best country if they had alien weapons who's gonna mess with them.

Nope, protons travel at c at all times in all reference frames bar nothing. The whole notion of slowing light down in a medium is just on the macro scale, microscopically the light is being absorbed and re-emitted by the medium, this process takes times and thus makes the light take longer to propagate through it, yet it's never actually ever moving slower than c when it's a photon.

It is entirely possible that technology could open doors we didn't even know were there.

Wait, you seriously think we know about every planet in the Milky Way? Sweet fuck, did you not read a single post in this whole thread? Or are you just retarded?
Okay. First of all, how do we know there isn't intelligent life in our galaxy? They keep it under raps. I mean, just look at A-51! Next, maybe their measure AND LENGTH of time is different from ours. In heaven, a thousand years on Earth is a wisp of smoke. For them, maybe 2,500,000 years is actually 25. We just don't know. And there are no planets that could sustain life? OH THROW ME A FUCKING BONE!!!! We base that on what we can do. Maybe they are completely different from us. OH MY GOD PERISH THE THOUGHT!!! I know, right? But it could be true.
Warp drive...Duh

Prove it :colbert:
because we've already moved particles faster than the speed of goddam light,
No, we haven't
The Milky Way is big. In order to know there was no intelligent life out there, we'd need to check every single star, moon, planet, and meteor that went zooming near us.
For all we know we could be all in a computer simulation.
That's what I started thinking life was when i saw a Doctor Who episode which was like that :O
[editline]01:37PM[/editline]
There's so much out there we haven't discovered. We think because of the things we use in everyday life, we've discovered EVERYTHING. We haven't, what if there's another element undiscovered to go with fire, water, etc? It's the same with planets. Just because we survive with oxygen, doesn't mean other life needs it. They might survive on carbon monoxide, etc.
Why aliens couldn't have visted the Earth?
'cause aliens dosn't even exists..
We know for certain that there is no intelligent life in the milky way system, besides us.
I stopped reading here for obvious dumbness, not even our brightest scientists know that for certain, if there are, there ways of communication both organic and artificial could be way different than ours and even then, their signals might not get here at all.

i am not quite sure that you know how big the milky way Galaxy is.
we are the only intelligent life in our solar system, but ours is one of more than 500 billion
If aliens DO exist. They Should Have the same religion as ours. If not, WHO CREATED THEM?
they did it already

sorry
I've always had this fucked up theory about how an unknown species before us became so developed technologically that they began to experiment with the evolution of species and the like, so they sent out several clusters of spores to the planets in our solar system, and the spores they sent to Earth grew and grew, into us eventually.
For all we know we could be all in a computer simulation.
On a losing battle with no chosen one..Think i'll go with both pills
You are assuming that they want to visit us.
Think of any other species on Earth.
Think about it hard.
Do they ever feel the need to visit you?
Do they care?
As such, the ''Alien'' mentality if they do exist, is probably 'MATE AND REPEAT'
Then again, that depends on what you classify as intelligent life, and if you assume that we deem an example, then it is incredibly unlikely anything will ever happen. We are the minority.
I believe there are a lot of intelligent life out there, but since we are probably too far away from them to actually meet them. And I don't think all "aliens" will be carbon based.

Reminds me of 2001: A Space Odyssey (the book that is). The keepers of the universe helped shape mankind into what it is today. Good book.
Wait....what? We have only explores a fifth of the milky way even WITH telescopes. I think you mean solar system. The milky way is still very vast and large our telescopes have probably only found 0.008% of the milkyway. How do we know there's no intelligent life if we only explored a fifth of it? Maybe their society CANT fly fucking space ships yet. Ever think of that? I mean I agree to you on how long it would take but really? No intelligent life at all?
What if on the exact other side of the galaxy there was a teeheev2 posting a comment right now in a very similar thread about how we couldn't exist
What if there evolved humans from a parallel universe then?
That's something to think on
