If you can afford it, take it to a shop. Only reason I'm doing mine in my garage is because I'm a poor bastard. As good as it looks, it's a steaming pile of shit compared to what a GOOD paint job will get you. Don't skimp out and go with the cheapest guy because it will turn out like shit, it's one of those things where you should probably fork out a bit more coin if you want it to last more than a year. My car looked perfect when i got it and less than a year later, I've got circles a foot in diameter of clear coat that is peeling off.
[editline]9th December 2011[/editline]
And if you know nothing about painting you're shit out of luck. I've painted many things in my time and even still, mine was turning out shit until my dad basically pushed me out of the way and started doing it for me. Spray paint just has far too much of an uneven pattern, and it splatters and drips everywhere and blah blah blah...No, it's not worth it, especially if you're inexperienced. Even if you ARE experienced it will only look good from a distance.
I figured, hopefully I can find a shop that can match the color I've got, I like my eighties sky blue sedan.
I was kidding. Neither of those affect smog emissions.
IC's do affect smog emissions here in California. I've had two friends fail for having upgraded front mounts. Sure, it's stated that upgraded intercoolers are legal provided the existing smog equipment is attached and functioning, but most smog techs will fail you regardless with an IC that lacks a carb sticker. It happens to everyone here. I know you were being sarcastic, but it's an annoyance that everyone here has to deal with. Most smog techs will rag on you for the stupidest shit, anything even remotely tampered with the intake and you fail visual.

They are illegal as far as California State Law is concerned, but they do not affect emissions.

Take it to a Maaco auto body repair if there is one by you. they are a bit more expensive but they are a nationwide shop so they have standards they have to follow. They also match as close as they can and blend it inwards to your current paint color

If you're talking about the gas coming out of the tailpipe, yeah, they do absolutely nothing by the numbers; if anything they're improving the numbers as they're allowing the engine to run more efficiently.
So I know nothing about painting but my car needs a paint job. Is it even worth it to try to DIY it or should I just send it to a shop
depends what u want it to look like and what u got.
i myself, wanted a cheap paint job to fix the baked paint, from 28 years of a truck being in the desert
what i started with

sanding and alot of it.

primer

then wet sanding
the i rolled on paint, rustoleum thinned with mineral spirits, and about 6 layers, with sanded every two, steping down in grit.

as u cansee i didnt use body filler on all the little imperfections in the body work, it a 30 year old truck that i use off road and now dd(130 mile commute in to a very rural area, rust was my main concern)

and two years later well 1.75 years. ( the color is still closer to ^ pic, i phone photos make it look darker.

i got about 100 buck in it for all supplies, sand paper, rollers, plastic, ect.
that looks really nice, i guess my biggest concern would be the even coating but i guess sanding helps.
Did you use any clearcoat?
Did you use any clearcoat?
nope just polished to a shine and waxed once in two years. its a really tough paint i dont think i have one rock chip in 40k miles of driving it since paint.
I'm so happy to live in a state where there aren't any emissions laws(except portland), although the occasional beat to shit 4 banger truck with pretty much an open header is pretty annoying.
Can't wait till my truck gets old enough that I don't have to pass emissions anymore, which will be 2 years from now.
Anyways, changed my oil, oil filter, and my Serpentine belt. WD-40'd the springs and shit on my hood too. Went to pop my hood to put oil in after draining it and it didn't pop, so I got my dads help and pushed up and down on the hood while he pulled the lever to pop it.
OH and I got something like a poor mans Short ram intake on my truck. I'll take a picture at some point, but all I did was flip the plate over on my air filter and tighten the butterfly nut back down so the filter is exposed, but the plate is tightened down on top so it seals around the rubber ring on the top of the filter. My dad showed it to me, he said when he was in high school they used to call it the "Mopar Moan" or something. Sounds mean getting on the freeway.
Just gotta change my starter, my front brakes some time soonish, and my coolant temp sensor. But that will have to wait till my next pay check. :(

It's getting cold outside too, no snow though.
put eibach sportline springs on the 11 mustang, then i put the cover back on it and closed the garage door.
I'm working on getting a nearly-free Mustang.

It's a '90 hatch, pinto bean powered with a slushbox. Pretty much the worst case scenario for a fox body. But it's nearly free... Who gives a shit?
[editline]12th December 2011[/editline]
And look at the bitchin' THOR sticker on the driver's fender!
That shit comes with it, for free!

lx?
Pretty sure it's an LX, I think in '90 they only had the LX and the GT, and the GT only came in five point slow flavor. I don't think they had a "base model" in '90.
replaced the 26 year old japanese bulb in my third brake light.
feels good man.
Keep it. That's cool shit and shit stuff

What to do with my set of 13x5 Dodge Charger rallies?
Black 'em out, mount up some fat 7.5" BFGs and roll them on my CRX

Two of them are Comp T/A drag radials. The other two will be too as soon as I feel like wrestling those Radial T/As off of there.
And drop the CRX down a little.
Just a little!
I worked on a bunch of fucking nothing
it rained and I worked all day so I didn't do anything ):
It's been fucking pouring for days now. Was supposed to turn into more snow today but never did.
It's been fucking pouring for days now. Was supposed to turn into more snow today but never did.
I really wish it would not rain for once, as i need to take the transmission off my truck to change the clutch slave cylinder, and my garage has a crashed 260z where i would park it to work on it normally :(
Yeah, I've been wanting to get up under my car for a while now, too. But the last like 2 weeks has either been snow or rain...The stuff i want to do is more out of boredom than necessity but still.
[editline]13th December 2011[/editline]
Except the heater; I do need to get that working. Wouldn't surprise me if it started getting into the sub-zero temps in the next couple weeks.

That's no good.
Took a try at porting a 2 stroke cylinder, not bad except that I still have to sand it smooth. I only did the intake and exhaust entry ports, I didn't know enough to attempt to port the ports leading to the block.
Those 2 strokes are funky engines, really neat how they work. The one I did was for a snowmobile and I ended up breaking a couple of things on my first try but that's the purpose of mechanics, to help you learn from your mistakes. If I can get it together then I'll attempt to start it but someone took the fuel pump so it won't be a long run.

Shit, is this how you change spark plugs?
Whoops.
Wow man so easy to change Cylinder Head on your car
It took me about 30 minutes to yank it off. It'll take me another hour to clean everything up and put the new gasket in, get it tightened down. But right now I'm taking a break to make some chili and drink some Mountain Dew.
Way easier than mine, I had to take more than half my damn engine off to get the head itself off
It's been fucking pouring for days now. Was supposed to turn into more snow today but never did.
Raining all day here, in minnesota even.
I mean come on we're half way through december and the 3-4in of snow we had is all gone now.
Also no snow forecasted until the 26th, i'm dreaming of a brown christmas man
Well, I'm home now, after having to come here twice to dig through my tools and get my new head bolts, about an hour ago I got the head back on, and torqued down, and for the last hour I've been tearing into it again. It's got a cracked sleeve.
Soooo.... I don't know what I'm going to do with it now. I'll probably piece me another engine together and drop in it. But for now I'm going to put it out in the pasture with my parts Civic and run the CRX I guess.
