As a person that doesn't smoke, but works around people that do, but aren't allowed to smoke on site (i.e. I work in a hospital in the cancer dept.) I can categorically say, you can smell the ones who have got their cancer from smoking. They all have an aura of the smell, regardless how recent their last (some come off the wards and haven't had one in days). As long as they smoke regularly (half a pack per day min) you can tell.
