Well, lets say 10 years from now Ive got a mortgage and a child on the way. If I have perused the single most interesting aspect in my life and dedicated my education path towards it, does your job still become interesting now that a burden is upon your success?
i think your mistake here is thinking that studying any form of art/design means that your only job is going to be selling your own work. luckily, that's not how it works.
in my profession (graphic design) you're most likely to start out as a junior designer, potentially moving around different design companies for a few years after graduation until you find one that you really want to work for. it's a fairly close knit industry, so moving between companies is never too much of a problem (save a little bit of friendly competition). once you've settled on a company you might stay there for 5, 10, maybe 15+ years. in that time you're likely to progress from junior designer > middleweight > art director > creative director, depending on your skills, drive and the opportunities available to you. starting wage for a junior designer (i'm led to believe) is something in the region of £17-£21,000 - which is not a lot, but if it's a job that you really enjoy going to 40 hours a week, then it's a fair pay off. once you start getting to director roles you're looking at anything between £50-£100,000, and that's not a bad wage for any profession. a guy from my uni who graduated 5/6 years ago has recently moved out to australia, is working as art director for a huge company and is now earning in that region, and he's not yet 30.
it works just the same as any other job. you start somewhere reasonably low down, you work hard, you work even harder, and you get further up the ladder until you're either head of the company or you start your own company. and as with any job, if you're rubbish at it, you're not going to do well.
freelance, now that's a whole different story, but not every job in the arts industry is freelance, far from it in fact. and some people can make freelance work for them. it's not just "i'm an ~artist~ and my only income is from selling my paintings", it's really not. i can understand you wouldn't feel comfortable pursuing that if that was your profession, i doubt many people would, but do not make the assumption that that is all an arts course can ever lead to.

that's why you, ya know, don't be a mong and just live within your limits. if you're a freelance artist without a steady flow of income and your partner doesn't have a steady/large income either, then don't own a house and a car you can't pay for
i'll be happy forever painting as long as i can eat and provide stuff for my kid(s) which i'm sure i'll be able to manage, especially because what looks to be my long-term partner will go into a secure and more traditional job than i. i'm not arsed about a big house and a big car and a garden
edit: and then of course there's always the stuff autumn talks about with moving up the ladder from being an artist to a director. my dad left art college with nothing. my ma and his wedding rings cost £40 and they couldn't afford an engagement ring. he started up his own business and it went bust. eventually he set one up that succeeded and now he makes around £100k a year. art is a scary industry but you can get anywhere with it with enough skill and commitment
my girlfriend's folks are an even better story: her ma was a waiter and her dad was a band's roadie. then he joined the band, started other bands, and then he became the prime-time bbc radio 1 dj and arguably the most famous dj in the country at the time. safe to say that artist is sat on some nice money now. he doesn't have a monetary worry in the world
tldr getting rich off art is the best thing in the world

Thanks for the explanation behind the art area, I know a few people who have this art foundation qualification and are moving into different specializations but if the majority of them work as you've explained then fair enough.

I gave my girlfriend a key to my apartment so she could stay here while I was back home over the summer. Now she keeps coming over unannounced in the morning. She showed up at 8 in the morning on the first day of classes and woke me up when I had finally gotten to sleep at 5:30 that morning. I got mad, she cried, I told her not to do that again, now two days later she's done it again.
I'm taking my motherfuckin key back.
If my girlfriend came over - unannounced - in the morning, it'd make me happy. I don't get why you'd even be going to bed at 5:30am when you've got classes in the day (I guess classes start 9 / 10 / 11 or something, right? In Ireland, we get the times for our lectures the night before [they're posted online] and most lectures start either at 11am, 1pm or 3pm and I'm usually up by 8 or 9). Life's too short to be getting mad over being woken up by your girlfriend, Johnny :v:
even if you major in something "fun" like art, it's still going to become your job. if you're doing the same thing for a few decades it's going to stop being as fun as it initially was.

this is assuming that a) he has the same schedule as you and b) he didn't have a reason to be awake that late.

I didn't GO to bed at 5:30, I fell asleep then. I went to bed hours earlier and had awful insomnia.

Life's too short to be annoyed about someone who tells me she loves me continually not respecting my personal space?
I'm not making excuses for Johnny here but there are things you may not have considered, for example I know astrophys classes in my uni use the observatory at silly times of the morning, people work late, partying? If he wants to be up late then that's up to him. I wouldnt want my woman letting herself in and waking me up if I'd been up all night doing a paper or something

He said that she came in at 8am on the first day of classes, so it's safe to assume that he'd have to be up somewhat early, no? Also, reason b) doesn't make sense. I guess you mean early instead of late.

Also, you may enjoy that, but you perhaps missed the bit where johnny asked her not to do it again, and then she did anyway?

Didn't realize you had insomnia.
Didn't realize you had insomnia.
Some of the time, yes. Usually exacerbated by things like the first day of class.

No. I didn't have class until 1:25.

I warned her if it happens again I'll take the key back. She seems committed to not doing it again. We'll see.
Does anyone here have a job in 3D animation? Gaming or Movie work.
I'm trying to decide between going into Graphic Design or 3D Animation courses next year. (taking a year off to pay for the college i'm going to, they have good programs in both)
I've gotten a nice little snippet of what Graphic Design is from Autumns post up there, but anything else anyone wants to mention about either would be great :D

i don't think i even touched on what graphic design is, i just explained a normal process someone working in the field would go through :P
what sort of previous study/interest do you have in graphics/animation/arty things in general?
Some of the time, yes. Usually exacerbated by things like the first day of class.
I can concur on that especially before tests and whatnot. Really kills your mood before doing anything knowing you didn't sleep well.
be super nice when its the very first time youre meeting someone, but if you stay all annoying and praisy, it will get stale fast
How do I tell my girlfriend she's getting chubby, without actually telling her she's getting chubby?
How do I tell my girlfriend she's getting chubby, without actually telling her she's getting chubby?
"you're not getting chubby"

Well I mean the internals of how to goes when your actually getting into the field. I already know what it, we had graphic design courses in my highschool (actual good ones, we have a good art department). likewise we had an animation course, which was a new one. It was basically combination thought between me and the teacher and one other student, depending on the section. (learned it the night before then taught everyone else). 3D was my favourite section, as we went through traditional, flash, and 3D in maya.
Art is certainly what I'm looking forward to going in to (not that I can probably get into much else meaningful with my marks :v:) I find both subjects interesting and fun to work with, maybe with a bit of leaning to 3D animation.
Personally I would like to do both, take one a main and teach myself the other as a free-lance job on the side, mostly just deciding which would be my main job really. I know I will do both either way.
is it really getting that much of a problem that you're going to have to wreck her self esteem
No .. but she was a dancer and she was absolutely gorgeous. And, like, i've been working out to keep that six pack that she loves so much. She's getting kinda lazy and sloppy with her appearance, and we're not even married yet!

She probably already knows, most likely you don't need to tell her.
If it's not a problem for you if shes a little chubby then you don't need to tell her.
If it's a problem for you to be in a relationship with her cause she put on a little weight then there may be a problem there.

My own plans were taking a year withouth studying anything officially, just learning 3D Animation and modelling on my own. Participating in small projects like mods for different games.
Then gather myself a portfolio to get myself into a school teaching 3D Arts or if enough luck strikes me even a full job.

She needs to find a spark for getting physically active again.
how does that like.. work? and how big is your car? was it uncomfortable?
i'm just collecting data here
I have an Volkswagen Fox, a really small one. I pulled both driver seats to the front leaving enough space, sliding them to the maximum so that I have enough space. That car has only 2 doors.
We pulled at night to the side and well we went to the backseats an we started kissing and such, then we took of our clothes. Luckily I have always condoms in my car. Then I put it on and she was sitting ontop of me, for a good few minutes, then she laid down in a diagonal position and I continued, afterwards I took her from behind and she was facing the front seats. Anyway then we proceeded to finish our business.
All in all it is rather uncomfortable and tricky, I do not have enough free space to fully move and thrust. To much shit in the way, besides it gets really hot and there is definitly a lack of fresh air, we did not open the windows because she is really loud. But it has a thrill and it is definitly a cool experience, we both were kind of needy.
