Next year, I'll be heading to the UK to start my university life in medicine (hopefully). Although I'm out of topic with the thread title, I just wanted to ask what UK culture is really like. I want to know how girls are in the UK. I heard there's alot of racism to foreigners but I want to confirm this. On slight topic, are people there generally open minded, or closed and serious mostly?
The racism, like anywhere, depends on the people. However any organization or institution would not tollerate it. I go to a grammar school, and the furthest racism goes is the self seclusion of a lot of the strict Muslims, and the suspicion towards some of them. Through cadets I socialise with people from some of the roughest areas of Birmingham, and there is virtually no racism. I think Birmingham as a whole isn't too bad for stuff like that, partly because of the fact its so multicultural. There are idiot nutters and white scum like the EDL who do fuck all for the country and think they're entitled, and most of their racism is directed to people from the Indian sub continent. Where abouts are you planning to live? As thisispain said, expect to be jokingly insulted, and expect dark humour. I loved doing it to the Americans on the cruise I went on. By English standards I was barely bring crude, but some of the "no cuss" Texans were shocked. And don't say cuss, it sounds stupid. We swear not cuss.
if a girl is insecure, shes told you shes insecure, her friends have told you shes insecure, how do you tell if she is only being insecure or if she doesnt like talking to you
does it matter? If she keeps answering your calls and your dates, then it's all that matters. Listen to her needs and realize why isn't she securet and if there's somethting you can do about it subtely

And just to inform you, I'm Korean so I was also wondering if there's any racism for Asians in general.
The location of the medical schools I want to apply to are in Manchester (Manchester Uni), London (Imperial, Barts/Queen Mary/King's), Newcastle (Newcastle Uni)
Manchester is a depressing place with a dark history so be aware if you go there, very dreary and post-industrial. London is basically the epicenter of England, you can find anyone doing anything there. Newcastle of course is in the north of england, where things are a little bit different from the south. generally southerners thinks people from the north are yobs, while northerners think people from the south are arrogant elites. i never lived in that part of england so i don't really know much about the north.
And just to inform you, I'm Korean so I was also wondering if there's any racism for Asians in general.
oh yes, but as i said and mort i'm assuming implied is that it's not out in the open at all. you can ignore anyone who would be racist towards you and you won't be in any trouble. no-one's gonna attack you.

Obviously his accent disrupted his English a bit but everybody loved him. He made friends with most people just fine. I live in the Midlands near Birmingham.
Manchester is a depressing place with a dark history so be aware if you go there, very dreary and post-industrial
hahahaah wtf [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] wtf is this seriously a joke ahahahaha jesus [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
i never lived in that part of england so i don't really know much about the north
no obviously
hahahaah wtf [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] wtf is this seriously a joke ahahahaha jesus
i have very delicate sensibilities ok, manchester always creeped me out

However people will think you are Chinese. I live just outside of Birmingham, and University Of Birmingham's medical course is one of the best in the country. I like the city too, more friendly and slower paced than London, and the Bullring is great. Personally my first choice uni for 2013 entry is Imperial though. I seriously doubt you would encounter racism from other Uni students, especially in London as their are so many foreign students. Best of luck for entry, are you moving from Korea or somewhere else?
manchester is the 2nd biggest city in the UK (no it's not birmingham, based off some 200 year-old estimation). it is hugely multicultural and has the most prestigious musical history of any city on the island. manchester uni is one of the most highly revered universities in the country, following oxbridge and edinburgh. it has one of the world's longest living, most open and large, gay communities. the two largest football teams in the world are in manchester. the bbc is primarily located in manchester but yeh don't come here we're all just factory workers and it always rains :downs: [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
i have very delicate sensibilities ok, manchester always creeped me out
i dont even know what this is supposed to imply
And as thisispain said, unless you are very unlucky and bump into a bunch of EDL or a lunatic like the one who shot the Indian student, you're not going to get attacked. Racism would probably reserved to a snide word or just suspicion towards you, racism isn't out in the open. you obviously thought i was making manchester look like a shit hole when all i said was that it was depressing, dreary, and post-industrial, and that's not something you can really deny about the city's appearance because they didn't tear down thousands of old buildings like they did in London but they're all good places to study really
but yeh don't come here we're all just factory workers and it always rains
now you're just being difficult [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
i dont even know what this is supposed to imply
it was a self-deprecating gesture implying you should back up a bit
Manchester is an absolute shit-hole. Stay away from that place. Thisispain's description was spot-on. If you want to go to Medschools, stick to London / The South of England. That's where it's at. As a Korean, you'll be loved and cherished in London and the South. [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] Loved and cherished. What the fuck. I need to sleep.
i didn't say it was a fucking shithole, don't pull me in with your anti-northern thing
you obviously thought i was making manchester look like a shit hole when all i said was that it was depressing, dreary, and post-industrial, and that's not something you can really deny about the city's appearance because they didn't tear down thousands of old buildings like they did in London
but then you could say that about any large british city, other than of course london. your remark was clearly not aimed only at architecture, you're just backing up. if it was aimed only at that, then wow it was a pretty abrupt way of saying it that opened the door for a lot more negative sentiment architecture in manchester is sick anyway. so much old gothic kept in great condition. it's awe-inspiring if anything. there's a reason christopher nolan wanted to make it his gotham
now you're just being difficult
no i was just extending the ignorant stereotype you were enforcing on a city you clearly know nothing about, outside of "it was once industrial so therefore it has some industrial buildings" [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
Manchester is an absolute shit-hole. Stay away from that place
wtf is this shit right okay i've been to london many times. do you want to know what i thought? dreary, depressing, devoid of character, devoid of any friendliness or personality. no one in any retail places i spent time in speaks english. no one wants to talk to you, no one has time to stop, no one even wants to make eye-contact. it's a faceless place full of faceless people. it sucks
i didn't say it was a fucking shithole, don't pull me in with your anti-northern thing

Thisispain's description was spot-on.
English, motherfucker. Do you speak it? I wasn't pulling you into my anti-northern thing. I was saying your post describing Manchester was spot on.
but then you could say that about any large british city, other than of course london.
well London was one of the three cities that we were drawing comparisons with
if it was aimed only at that, then wow it was a pretty abrupt way of saying it that opened the door for a lot more negative sentiment
it honestly was just the architecture and the general look of the city, i wasn't just trying to be mean towards northern people
no i was just extending the ignorant stereotype you were enforcing on a city you clearly know nothing about, outside of "it was once industrial so therefore it has some industrial buildings"
well you're right, and it would be stupid of me to think that i would know better about manchester than someone who actually lives there i've visited it twice and both times the architecture and the look of the city is what struck me the most about it, but it's my mistake and i should have made clear what i was talking about.
Lee Evans did a skit about the city of Manchester. I'm trying to find a Youtube clip of it but I can't.
I think if you go to London, english people will secretly hate you since they know you will just stick to other asians or people from your original environment and you would only socialize with them if the rest of the asians weren't there. And they won't display racism simply because uni costs too much to get into any kind of trouble. I guess this is the same in most universities and if you go to villages it will be the same but more extreme and apparent since that's how it has always been.
right okay i've been to london many times. do you want to know what i thought? dreary, depressing, devoid of character, devoid of any friendliness or personality. no one in any retail places i spent time in speaks english. no one wants to talk to you, no one has time to stop, no one even wants to make eye-contact. it's a faceless place full of faceless people. it sucks
*someone bitched about my city so i'm gonna bitch about their city* i honestly don't see how you can think that london's devoid of personality, and as for people in retail not speaking english? well that's definitely bullshit. it's not for everyone, granted, but dreary? depressing? i don't know which bits of london you've visited, but i don't think anyone can find the entire city the words you've just said [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline]
I think if you go to London, english people will secretly hate you since they know you will just stick to other asians or people from your original environment and you would only socialize with them if the rest of the asians weren't there.
the hell? no

He's going to Uni in England. He'll be mingling with other students. How many Asians do you think will be in his Uni course? One or two, three at most. What are you on about, English people will secretly hate him? What a load of rubbish. If he goes to Uni in England, he'll be having a fantastic social life with the students of his University. And, speaking as a Med student myself, other Med students kick ass. We've all worked hard to get to where we are, so that's a filter in itself, sifting out the assholes and "thug" types (as they generally flunk school or don't get accepted into Medicine since it's very tough to actually get a place in the course). Med students are usually really cheery and nice. So, he's going to have a great time in England. My only recommendation is to stick to either London or the South for Uni (south is out of the question, as it's a choice between Manchester, Newcastle and London), and London is definitely your best choice. Go for London!
How many Asians do you think will be in his Uni course? One or two, three at most.
uhh...
Doesn't it cost a ton to live in London?
does it matter? If she keeps answering your calls and your dates, then it's all that matters. [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] who the fuck cares about london you cant ask a city out
*someone bitched about my city so i'm gonna bitch about their city* i honestly don't see how you can think that london's devoid of personality, and as for people in retail not speaking english? well that's definitely bullshit. it's not for everyone, granted, but dreary? depressing? i don't know which bits of london you've visited, but i don't think anyone can find the entire city the words you've just said [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] the hell? no
As a tourist in London I don't see how you could say it lacks character, London is my favourite city of anywhere ever.
uhh...
Asians meaning Koreans / Chinese. Not Pakistani / Indian. There'll be a shit-tonne of Pakistanis and Indians in the Med course. Not many Koreans or Chinese. And I mentioned that in response to this guy's comment:
english people will secretly hate you since they know you will just stick to other asians or people from your original environment and you would only socialize with them if the rest of the asians weren't there.

Doesn't it cost a ton to live in London?
it is pretty expensive, but as a student you should receive some sort of financial support, although i'm not sure about international students. afaik med students generally get good support personally i would go for london or manchester. manchester uni is very good, but london will give you more opportunities just due to the fact it's a large capital city.
Well, medicine is one of the most competitive careers to get into so even the worst students will know that people have the same organs inside even if they have a different skin on the outside but knowing this does not mean that some may be secretly racist. Medicine requires a good amount of social skills if you are going to be a GP and those skills would help you hide any traces of your racism to the world. I was also talking in a more general sense but finding out who may or may not be secretly racist is not something easy to find out. By the way, even if you think that racist people are somehow are not able to achieve high grades it does not necessarily make it true.
What. Just, what? Med students are - by your logic - psychologically superior at hiding their racism than, say, an Engineering student? Why do you post. [editline]2nd September 2012[/editline] Why are you even talking about racism. People in Uni don't care if you're from Korea, or America, or Malaysia, or Saudi Arabia, or Egypt.
Why do you assume that engineering students have inferior social skills? I did not say that anywhere in my post.
