I fail to understand why its so stupid to give a damn about my name. In the end, its all we have left. you can lose everything, but in the end you still have your name. Its my name, and I'm damn proud of it. i'm proud of every single person who bears it, and to have it end because I didn't want kids? Thats just plain selfish.

My best friend, who's 16, like me, has potentially got his girlfriend pregnant. She's against abortion. He loves her to the extent that recently he and his girlfriend joked about marriage and she actually wanted him to propose to her and he seriously considered it. Thing is, I can't possibly believe they are genuinely in true love and will be together forever. Even if they were, there's no way they're ready for a fucking child. I don't know what to do. He's my best friend and I'm so fucking terrified for him.
I've spoken to him, and he's absolutely terrified too, but he's acting worryingly defeatist. He says if she chooses to have it, he'll accept it and support her. He says he'll be there for his family. It's great of him, but I feel like he's not fighting hard enough. Like he's not trying to talk his girlfriend out of it.
Maybe I'm terribly wrong and they are ready, but saying I was right, what can I do? I know they're idiots for getting into this, I'm sure they feel the same. Guys i want to tell you about the last time i had a girlfriend, last year it lasted for three months.
One day browsing the interwebs i found a set of subliminal CD's made by Dr. Mel Gill claiming that if you listened to the CD's whatever you wanted could happen. There were six CD's in total. The other 5 CD's is not important, what is important is the sixth CD, the Soul Mate Accelerator. (I know cheesy name) But during the 3 months i decided to use the CD non stop i managed to get a girlfriend.
I bet this sounds crazy, but it is true. I dont think it was "luck" that i met a girl that was pretty much perfect for me, and i didn't even have to try to get her to like me she's the one that wanted to start a relationship in the first place! It makes me think there is really something to subliminals.
But now for the downside, when i stopped using the CD at the end of the 3 months everything went to hell and now were not together.
So if your a lonely fucker, you can have a gf too! But its like drugs without the side effects.

My dad's dad was found on the street and adopted by a fisherman, I never spent any decent amount of time with any family beyond direct blood relation since my dad moved to a different country and with the way surnames are derived in China chances are at some point one of my ancestors decided on that because an emperor had it or something anyway.
People value their names to different extents and I think we should probably just respect that some people place more importance on their name than others.

i can understand the want for keeping the 'family name' and all that jazz. myself, i'm the last female of our entire family and if i don't keep my name when i marry then that's that, but i also agree with thisispain in the sense that it's not the single biggest deal in the world, which you seem to be making it out to be.

For both, tbh, I know what it's like for old people when they might not have their family visiting and the like (my great grandmother went through it) and struggle to live, and the giving serious advice to random people strikes me as pretty selfless, too.
well it's for money so it's not that selfless.
i don't know, i just couldn't do a job lying to people about something i'm trying to sell, or work with a cold calculator in a cubicle all day.
