I actually JUST bought Arma II: Combined Operations because of all the shack tactical videos. First, I'll get to know the game... then try my luck with applying. Getting into Arma II is going to be a blast, I'll tell you that.

It's good to know how to use ACE + ACRE since most "half-serious" groups use it.
Sounds pretty crazy, I would probably get yelled at or something for being a complete dipship though. I am not used to the whole tactical simulator group thing, I am have been a run and gun shooter player all my life. It looks pretty engaging though, can't get anything like that in any other game it seems.
No one's going to yell at you, Unless you manage to teamkill entire fireteams at a time with careless AT4's being launched. But in the 15th MEU, Riflemen carry the AT4's and they're usually the second most experienced of the 4 in a fireteam, while newcomers usually end up the Assistant Automatic Rifleman/Automatic Rifleman. After 30 days of being a grunt you can transfer to whatever has an opening that you like, Tanks, Air Wing. So many people in the 15th that they pretty much have everything the real Marines have, and balance realism with fun, rather than strictly all realism
You don't need to know any lingo, and I'm sure they run you through like a 30 minute little tutorial they've made up as part of the recruitment process, just like other Realism units. It's nothing big or fancy except with the SOCOM unit which is just ridiculous 15th MEU Realism Unit run you through two short classes and you're good to go for their Bi weekly Squad trainings, weekly Fire Team trainings, and Monthly 60+ player Ops, and own their own Recruiting server people play on that's a fun for all play at your liesure type of deal, which you can play on freely. It's open to the public. They require you to have certain amount of Promotion Points and the correct 'classes' taken to be promoted up to certain ranks and positions so you don't have to do anything you don't want to, and won't do anything you won't know how to. A lot of these units use ACRE and ACE2 which make for the most realistic military experience you're going to get outside of joining the real thing. Best $30 you'll ever spend on entertainment, you should pick up Combined Ops
That's a lot even compared to Shacktac, Shacktac is just basic ranks and you rank up when you feel you should. New applicants (pFNG's), take a short introduction on how shacktac operates and how to use basic ace functions, i.e. ace wounding system, ace interaction. That's about it. We play every Saturday at 5pm Central US time, and have a pFNG session every wednesday at 7pm Central US time. And, yes. We use ACRE and ACE, but edited versions that remove the stuff that we don't like so much. Also a host of In-house mods that are great. The only ranks are pFNG, FNG, Grunt, Regular, Specialist, NCO. Shacktac is mostly infantry. and most players will be riflemen. pFNG's are ONLY allowed to be rifleman or assistant Automatic Rifleman. FNG's are allowed to be automatic riflemen and fire team leader. Grunts and up are allowed to use anything they think they are capable of using. If you join shacktac to fly helicopters or be a crewman, you joined the wrong place.

I can see how the 15th isn't for everyone. They do try to mimic to the best that they can, while still keeping fun, how actual Marines work. It's a little laid back here and there, though. I can't get into ALL serious ALL the time type of games myself. Quite a few vets in the unit as well The 15th, during Ops and Trainings, you're pretty restricted. You have your loadout which you keep with you until you change into another position, and it's a correct true to life loadout. No SCAR's, and even the M249's are limited now since the real marines were moving to the IAR's, but last I recall usage of the 249 was up to the Fire Team Leader and what the AR agreed on. You have to qualify on the rifle range, which they made pretty difficult, every few months. You use actual room clearing techniques (Which is kind of clumsy in Arma but it still works), actual formations like a wedge and line, and superwedge that combines all fire teams in a squad into one wedge. They were even experimenting with a new wounded/corpsman system where they put your time limit before you die to 15 minutes or so, you call it in, Evac the guy to a field hospital that the corpsmen set up, and get patched up there and Hopefully get a ride back out to your unit. The old system was just treat on the spot by the corpsman, and only the corpsmen. But that's just for Trainings and actual Operations. All the other times it's just fun on the recruiting server, and there you can use whatever weapon you want, Fly or Drive anything you want (As long as you're on Comms for support vehicles). I've been out of the game for a few months but last I played the server was constantly full and difficult to get into. I can only imagine it's worse now since DayZ beefed up Arma's popularity hell they have videos that cover an entire Op from multiple points of view if you'd like to see for yourself, some of it's pretty good. Actually I think a lot of us use the Shacktac hud, which after the cardinal directions were put on it, was a fucking GODSEND http://www.youtube.com/user/15thMEURealismUnit
