Another brilliant post.
prove it in no less than arbitrary word requirement
the purpose of art is to invoke emotion, and because people react to things differently, it will not always invoke the same emotion. thus, it's subjective.

but then why isn't whatever you posted not art
if people feel and react differently to things, then why should the definition art not be as ambiguous and reflect that sentiment

Its relative, for each individual there can be the idea of something being art or not art but as a whole, there is only art. Its a paradox and thats why many people reject it.
wait im not reading alot of this, are you people arguing over if art is subjective?
of course art is subjective
show me something you think is good art ill prove my point

i never said it wasn't art. at all. i implied it was the lowest form of art, but that's it.

be careful with scare quotes they are mostly used for sarcasm
As a fellow Melburnian I'm more scared of the 'indie' craze.
I like "Good Shoes" and "Darwin Deez" and certain Electro-Punk bands, oh no.
I like "Good Shoes" and "Darwin Deez" and certain Electro-Punk bands, oh no.
Would you still support and listen to these bands if they became popular and widely listened to?
If so, that's perfectly understandable.
If not, this is a sign of being a hipster.
Ensiferum, awesome. My cousin played a tour with them all over Europe and I have their first album.
I was lucky enough to only know 1 hipster who went to our school.
He was the MOST ANNOYING MORON I had ever seen in my life. He always quoted memes that were like half a decade old, listened to that trance crap in school and wanted to play it for everybody, and he always spent the whole class period either on his Alienware or Macbook Pro with the WoW login screen up.
Seriously, he never actually logged in or anything, he would just sit there listening to the teacher or his iPod with that screen up all the time.

I think I wouldn't because right now I am able to listen to them whenever I want. SOmetimes I'll listen to an album for 2 hours straight, sometimes I won't touch them for weeks.
The hing with "popular" music is not that the song is "played too often" but rather that a song is played in radio/tv/disco in situations that totally don't match the feelings I attribute to said songs.
And songs are love are of course songs that I can attribute certain feelings too. Who doesn't know that feeling of "wow that's exactly what I am thinking/experiencing"?
Now popular music, played and listened everywhere and to anyone is partially destroying that personal experience because obviously it's not what I MYSELF and a few people feel anymore but rather a multimedia event. Very unpersonal and pretty artificial, hard to grasp.
I wouldn't want to listen to music like that.

And if that makes me more "hipster", so be it.

Somebody's REALLY misinformed about hipsters...
Somebody's REALLY misinformed about hipsters...
I wasn't saying all of that was the typical hipster behavior, but that's just what he did.
As far as typical hipsters go, he dressed like one, made trance music, had every Apple product imaginable or anything that was stupidly expensive, and he pretended he was a nerd by acting like he knew everything about the internet and computers in general, but when he actually tried to fix someone's PC, he failed miserably.

Well, it is kind of elitist to think that other people can't "understand" the music - but I agree with you that some music does lose "something" in certain situations.
I also think that ceasing to listen to/support a band because they ACTUALLY sold out and changed their theme and ideas for the sake of money is not an unreasonable action either.
[editline]25th October 2010[/editline]
It's like if someone was wearing a LoZ T-shirt, and you went up to them and told them you thought Zelda was a good game - if they answer you with something like "yeah, Zelda is a weird name for a dude though isn't it", then you know you're talking to a hipster.
i goddamn hate hipsters in general
i do love wearing skinny clothes and i actually do wear big rimmed reading glasses due to the fact i NEED them to read, study, and to see.
but i somehow do always get classified like these motherfuckers
* die hipsters die
they come out

I don't get it. You hate people who go outside and have fun with other human beings and you also hate people who dress differently?

no you're just talking to somebody who isn't a nerd; something that's common in the outside world
no you're just talking to somebody who isn't a nerd; something that's common in the outside world
why in fuck's name would you wear a Zelda T-shirt if you hadn't ever played any of the LoZ games
answer me this Doriol
not everybody who has played LoZ is aware that zelda is the princess, and some people buy shirts because they like the design
not everybody who has played LoZ is aware that zelda is the princess, and some people buy shirts because they like the design
man
what if I was wearing like, the N7 hoodie and you came up and asked me if I played Mass Effect and I was like "what's mass effect", what would you think of me then?
maybe I'm using too many VG examples, but the idea is the same

I feel like I want a shirt that has a 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog on it with the caption "I GENUINELY LIKE THIS - I AM NOT COOL" to clarify it totally
Because the very idea of 'hipness' or 'trendiness' is nonsensical.
It's a social clique not based on some common interest or trait that holds them together like most such groups, but on the cliques themselves.
Its the same thing as scene, and it's just a mindless bandwagon. I have "Hipster" friends, but I bust their balls all the time.
If you like this type of thing, that's your thing. Go ahead. I'd encourage everyone to consider why they do what they do, though...
