The UrbanDictionary definition is one of the most accurate definitions of what a hipster is. They are interested in modern fashion and art.
My problem isn't with the descriptions of of interests etc. "Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers" Mainstream automatically = ignorant, so glad I know that now. "The muscular and athletic all-American male ideal is not seen as attractive by confident and culturally-empowered hipster women who instead view them as symbols of male oppression, sexism, and misogyny." I see, "culturally empowered" equals trying to ignore the fact you are ugly, and so are your friends so you try to be different to get attention. "culturally-vapid sorority-type girls with fake blond hair, overly tanned skin, and "Britney Spears tube-tops" Evil tube tops and blonde hair, better be judgemental and insecure about it and call them culturally vapid. "cultured hipster males" Ugh. "they are pioneers and leaders of the latest cultural trends and ideals." Oh really, just like the ridiculous garbage paraded around fashion catwalks, I can safely say that while some of the stuff may become mainstream in a more subtle form, a lot of it will be forever bizarre and ugly. "This phenomena also applies to music as well, as many bands have become successful and known to mainstream audiences only because hipsters first found and listened to them as early-adopters of new culture." Thank god for hipsters, apparently. Clearly the only early adopters are hipsters. "leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment in people who are no longer a part of the cultural ruling class. For example, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from culturally-clueless suburban frat boy types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity." ..... "Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can." lol, hilarious, "they cant possibly think we are ugly unattractive self important douchebags by the way we behave can they? they must just be jealous!" That's why I think the description is retarded, because it written in a style that tries to state hipsters are better than everyone else. Which, unfortunately is already the reason I dislike the "culture", same reason I dislike Apple and its users.
That's why I think the description is retarded, because it written in a style that tries to state hipsters are better than everyone else.
it's a joke smart one
"Hipsters" seem to be people who indulge in new fashion and music. Hipster hatred is counter-counter-culture. It's creepy, nerdy and anti-social.
I mean, isn't that what "nerdy" has always been? And now look at where it has gotten; it is now a widely-accepted group to be a part of instead of a pariah group like it used to be. Hell, hipsters sometimes even try to be nerdy (not that they have much success though) :v:
it's a joke smart one
That's why I said earlier that I was probably missing the point, and that it was intentionally ironic duh. But hey I guess I don't "get" the humour in it either way! -edit- to clarify I guess I just found it rather hard to tell, because I have come across a few people who would write that and be 100% serious about it, and actually think that way. Which made me admittedly uncertain if it was poking fun, or genuinely written by some arrogant hipster.
but not really though you just hate hipsters for whatever reason i mean you live in fucking australia, yet you hate something that's only relevant to the united states
Hmm, haven't been to Australia then I take it, quite a few of them in Sydney and Melbourne. I dislike most inner city trendy types whether they be hipsters or not though, most I have come across are pretty insufferable. -edit- Why am I even responding to you, you will no doubt keep posting probably with the sole intention of pissing me off :P

I dislike most inner city trendy types whether they be hipsters or not though, most I have come across are pretty insufferable.
no hipsterism is something limited to the united states because it's a cultural thing from here all the hipsters in the rest of the world are essentially consuming the cultural exports of the united states, but an actual hipster is centered on american culture. it goes both ways, basically the internet created both hipsters and hipster-hate because the internet is a social network, and the way people get up on social ladders is to disparage others. so usually, a person who calls out hipster things as being bad is trying to climb up their own social ladder to achieve a "cool" that only has the illusion of being different but it's not really different at all. let's face it, you wouldn't hate hipsters if the internet didn't exist because A. hipsters wouldn't exist outside of the US, and B. you wouldn't know why you are supposed to hate them. it's all a cultural narrative, and it's being manipulated in a way that probably also gets you to buy things.
how.... edgy of you
simple sociology
I dress in Bench t-shirts, jeans and Lacoste sneakers, what does that make me?
I dress like a hipster (v-necks, skinny jeans, and a few bright colored shirts) but I don't act like one. (This has been a Fun Fact, brought to you by SoaringScout).
You're all hipsters.
Woah, man. Deep.
You're all hipsters.
I'm a bit of a hipster when it comes to music, i listen to things that nobody really does, and about for that reason only. nothing fills me with more rage than talking about Metallica and hearing someone blurb that they love One and have it as a ringtone, but you ask them about something like Ride the lightning and they say "oh, never heard it".

A lot of people like one song a band makes and aren't fans of some other songs they made. And to be honest, the only Metallica song I have is One because I think that's a very good song.
I just noticed today that I've been doing pretty hipster stuff lately. I have a messenger bag, wear glasses, converse, casual pants, and a button up shirt. I'm pretty ashamed.
I don't really understand how any of that is hipster Like, at all [editline]24th June 2011[/editline]
I dress in Bench t-shirts, jeans and Lacoste sneakers, what does that make me?
a guy wearing clothes [editline]24th June 2011[/editline]
I dress like a hipster (v-necks, skinny jeans, and a few bright colored shirts) but I don't act like one.
what the fuck dude is there any kind of clothing that isn't considered hipster seriously
I'm not saying I think those are hipster clothes, though. I'm just saying that I dress like a hipster according to what other people say.
Everyone has hipster qualities to be honest. I mean, when it comes to music I'm a complete hipster, not with the genres, but mostly because I listen to loads of bands that are mainly unheard of in the UK (Valencia, Mayday Parade, Three Years Hiding, Yashin, Glamour Of The Kill to name a few) and I'm pretty much the only person I know that listens to them and I want to keep it that way. Also, I really dislike mainstream music e.g. chart-shit, music factory produced, artist who are only famous because their parents/relatives were in the music industry etc. I also wear skinny jeans with a passion and have a pair of hi-top nike iD's. I feel dirty...
I have a friend who is a total hipster (two of em actually) and they are both fine people. I'm not on said bandwagon.
Hipsters remind me of attention whoring furries and "bronies" The people themselves are usually fine but they just over do it when they do stuff IE Hipsters wearing obvious/annoying hipster clothing/FUCKING 3D GLASSES is like a furry wearing a fur suit in a public place
I knew a guy in my tech class who installed Linux (after erasing windows 7) When I asked him why he said he didn't like how overused windows 7 was and wanted something different  A few days later he asked if I had a windows 7 CD :v: He proceeded to fail the tech class, dropped out, went to tech school and got kicked out for poor grades Yes he wore scarves and thick frame glasses A nice guy but incredibly annoying hipster tendencies
Evil tube tops and blonde hair, better be judgemental and insecure about it and call them culturally vapid.
If I took out a few words and put in some typical words that describe hipsters, I could probably make one of those neat posts where I point out some of that cool hypocrisy you got there. But meh. EDIT: Not just directed at you, not at all. I read the first two pages of this thread, and what I saw was people complaining about: 1. The way they look 2. The music they like 3. What they do (Post on blogs and take pictures of parks? Honestly I don't think I get what a hipster is yet) I get it when you people talk about them shoving it in your face or whatever, but really, if they want to reject mainstream stuff and wear stupid clothes, then... I don't really see the problem.
Look at me I die my hare and misuse words can I have attention now? I wear really big glasses too, but you've probably never heard of them before!
Douchebags and elitists that's why
Enough with all the, YOU ONLY HATE HIPSTERS BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE HATE THEM AND YOU JUST WANT TO BE COOL!!!!!, I doubt anyone on the forums over 11 cares about whats "cool" to hate
Bunch of bigots in this thread. The only thing that's gay is skinny jeans.
Bunch of bigots in this thread. The only thing that's gay is skinny jeans.
You're contradicting yourself
There's at least one confirmed hipster in my school. During a music lesson our drummer called him a "mop-haired wimp" and I couldn't hold back the massive burst of laughter that I had to let out half a second later.
I hated hipsters before it was popular :smug:
Take off the fucking skinny jeans and put on some real fucking jeans! Give your junk some air!
Take off the fucking skinny jeans and put on some real fucking jeans! Give your junk some air!
Try not to talk about things you have no knowledge about. Almost all skinny jeans have extended crotches.
