I love the one where he plays those Chess Grandmasters. It's just clever as fuck
The Sixth Sense.
very tiny screens on the coins
I'd really love to know how he actually does that Whenever I see this kind of stuff on TV it's always staged, but for it to be live in front of an audience and for an audition nonetheless is quite unique
Cold reading. These shows are edited, remember. We don't get to see the full audition at all. For all we know he went through all the normal techniques in cold reading to get his answers, and that's what I will stick to unless the original video footage shows I'm wrong.
considering DB does live shows with randomly selected volunteers (look these shows up, they're simply amazing), it'd be pretty hard to fake everything he does. and people do use it for sinister purposes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR4y5iX4uRY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vz_YTNLn6w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j25qV5RO-nU If you read some of his books, he does a great job of describing the tricks he does and how easy some of them really are to pull off.
No no, I've seen those before, I meant how come other people don't use it for sinister purposes. If it is really that easy, interrupt a handshake and give "subliminal messages" in the middle of mindless small-talk, then I can't see how this isn't a lot more widespread. And are you sure they are randomly selected? Like I said before I think it sounds plausible and amazing, but just looking up the shows wont prove anything either way. I'm interested in knowing how much of it is actually real.
"I am often dishonest in my techniques, but always honest about my dishonesty. As I say in each show, 'I mix magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'. I happily admit cheating, as it's all part of the game.
It's cool and everything, but it becomes a problem if people begin to think everything he does is scientifically true. Unless it is.

Unless it is.
It's actually surprisingly easy and techniques like cold reading are used subconsciously by humans in normal interactions to gather information. It is also very widespread. There are absolutely tons of mediums, mystics, and psychics who will happily manipulate you if you pay the price. There is no shortage of street magicians and performers, and similar styles of manipulation are used by powerful people as well.
The last one, he enthusiastically guesses is Sharon's drawing, even though he should have been able to work out that she was the only one left
that's the joke

[editline]17th June 2012[/editline]
And are you sure they are randomly selected?
unless he can somehow predetermine where audience members will toss a monkey doll or whatever object he's using (2:10), I'd say it's a pretty random selection.
Fuck, I can't see any of these videos cause they're all blocked in the UK.
The thing that makes Derren Brown truly incredible is the fact that very few people are even aware of the thing that makes him incredible.
The thing that makes Derren Brown truly incredible is the fact that very few people are even aware of the thing that makes him incredible.
Nice vague post about nothing.
Nice vague post about nothing.
Well I'm not actually going to tell anyone what it is That spoils the fun
Well I'm not actually going to tell anyone what it is That spoils the fun
Damn you!
guys guys guys i figured it out hes not psychic he's a TIME TRAVELER see he played through it once and failed all of the guesses but figured out what they were drawing then he went back in time and played through it again
The thing that makes Derren Brown truly incredible is the fact that very few people are even aware of the thing that makes him incredible.
The things that make him incredible change from person to person. Some people take away a different lesson from what he does. Your reason for thinking he is incredible is no greater than mine or anyone else.
The things that make him incredible change from person to person. Some people take away a different lesson from what he does. Your reason for thinking he is incredible is no greater than mine or anyone else.
But there is a deeper reason as to why he's great, regardless of opinion. It objectively makes him awesome.
But there is a deeper reason as to why he's great, regardless of opinion. It objectively makes him awesome.
Or maybe this deeper reason is equatable with every other reason. I mean, you haven't exposed your supposed inside knowledge into Derren Brown's awesomeness for people to objectively look at. You surely can't expect to simply say that he is awesome for some reason we are not privy to, and have me or anyone else simply accept that at face value.
Oh, no I don't care. As a huge DB fan I just wanted to mention it, you guys can figure it out yourselfves. That's half the fun of it.
Maybe hes got a pager in his pocket, and someone in the audience is sending him morse code?
The half dollars are probably there to make the two pieces of tape stick out from his face a little bit, and most of the tape is placed around his forehead, and not his eyes. Wouldn't it be possible to simply look down through this hole right here? [editline]18th June 2012[/editline] I just noticed when he uses the roll of tape on his head he is jerking the other pieces a little too much, possibly to loosen the first two pieces further.
What terrible showmanship. I am really surprised that anyone finds this impressive granted how horribly it is executed.
Here's a good video, not America's got talent but you think you can dance:
