It's a rule on an internet forum. Yes I broke it, but it's not as if I had any malivcious intent or was even aware that I did until I was banned. Getting an instant perma for a misplaced attempt to help someone doesn't exactly cultivate respect.

Before garry opened up gold membership to everyone we used to post actual helpful info with the occasional own here and there (evil_paper being a good example); after the masses were let in, many proved themselves too idiotic to post in there properly (they'd generally just walk in and go "heh ur banned" or do stupid shit like reply to garrybanned users) so the mods put the rules up to dissuade people from posting.
