most importantly, it makes the forums look bad if you remove it. It was done a few months back (or was that more than a year now? the history blends together for me) and it looked utterly horrible; just avatars and names didn't fit.
secondly, number of posts actually does have a purpose; if someone has 10k+ posts, you know they're involved with the community; they may be terrible posts, but the user [I]is [/I]contributing to the discussion of the forum. if they've managed to make 10k posts the posts can't be too horrible or they'd be permabanned.
and it's always good to know who's involved in the community both for newcomers and for the modteam when picking someone.

SA doesn't show posts unless you visit the persons profile and i reckon it works much better than here. if the person is really contributing to the community you'll recognize and respect the name, not the number under it. and maybe the people with 10k+ posts back when fp was more strict could be considered decent posters, but these days just about every retard has thousands of posts and none of them could make a decent post to save their lives

back when garry did the forum upgrade in jan09, he decided to try having no join dates and no post count on the posts. very quickly, people made greasemonkey scripts that would scrape that info from profiles and paste it on to the posts, and all the people using it caused extra load on the forums. this plus people complaining led to the post count and join date returning

people need to stop comparing SA to FP really, we're not even comparable. the SA community is so ungodly huge that you're lucky to see the same user across threads in subforums at that place

SA is just an example, it could even work better here because of the smaller community. i'd be willing to bet the majority of users opposing removal of post count are the useless shitposters who rely on it for some sort of respect since they're incapable of making a valuable contribution. there's not a whole lot of people on here that can constantly post well and i'm guessing that number would go up if people didn't get to fall back onto their post count

From what I understand he pruned tons of old posts awhile back but never recounted the post counts so now it's been updated to your "real" post count

I'd be behind this, maybe there would be more posters like BDA or OvB if there wasn't a post count. People would have to make good posts, actual contributions to get any semblance of respect, hopefully.
