Compare Dark Age's 2008 release, Minus Exitus, with their 2009 release, Acedia Completely different sound. I'll leave you to decide which one is considered modern death.
It depends whether you consider modern death a sound or not but okay bare with me
It depends whether you consider modern death a sound or not but okay bare with me
I consider modern death a sound, and the negative criticism I'm talking about (IE the people who do nothing but bash modern death) seem to consider it a sound as well. That's a part of the reason of asking this thread, and my confusion as to whether its a label or a genre. Some people can interpret it as a literal label, as in "death metal released recently," but people can also consider it a unique sound, such as the bands I posted. The "modern death" I'm concerned about is more the latter, and what exactly is that sound that people are associated with "modern death" and separating from other genres of death metal.
Fair enough, I would say it was a sound too but what that specific sound is I have no idea. In regards to your previous post I wouldn't say either would be considered the classic style of death metal but I'd imagine the song off Acedia would be considered more modern it's quite scar symmetry-ish only lighter.

Which somewhat confuses me, because I've never seen Scar Symmetry referred to as modern death metal. As to whether or not Minus Exitus was considered "classic" death or not, I don't know, nor do I really care. All I know is that's it melodic death metal (which is all I really care about; classic death metal and it's various genres don't hold nearly as much appeal as melodic does. Say what you will about it, I don't care), and that there is a hefty difference between it and Acedia. At least, to me there's a hefty difference. Maybe I detect the difference simply because I've been listening to melodeath pretty much exclusively for the past few years. Who knows?

I'm a big fan of melodic death I think those who turn their noses up without exploring the genre properly do themselves a disservice but their loss.
I would assume "modern" death metal is death metal that has come out recently. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/modern

Bands that have come out in modern times have a type of sound that is associated with them being relatively new bands. So a band formed in 2009 that emulates the sound of a band from 2002 would be considered modern both because they came out in 2009, and also because they are emulating the sound of a previous modern death metal band. I warned you.
Congratulations you just exemplified everything that is absolutely terrible about modern death metal.
Here comes the troll train
I like alternative-progressive metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore.
Rad :smug:
I like alternative-progressive metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore.
I only listen to classic alt-prog metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore. Now everyone listens to alt-prog metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore. It's way too popular now and if you listen to it you are a fag.
The amazing thing about bullshit like this, anytime you go to an actual metal show no one is an idiot about genre or music in general, and most opinions are respected at least. You don't hear these stupid fucking elitists wandering around and making fun of every thing anyone likes. Why? I have no idea, I believe it's because they don't want to get their asses kicked, but it could be because they're shallow metal fans and don't really enjoy metal and only exist to do what they can to be a detriment to the culture.
Give this man a tick

Almost everyone was talking shit about them and their genre.
Congratulations you just exemplified everything that is absolutely terrible about modern death metal.
That's your opinion. You don't like it so you say it is a disgrace. [editline]04:20PM[/editline]
:psyboom: Holy shit. What do you think Tech Death stands for? Technical Death Metal.
Yeah, I'm aware of that, but it sounds like grindcore to me. I thought bands like Quo Vadis were Technical Death Metal, it sounds completely different.
There was a shitty metalcore band that played with Slayer and Megadeth when I last saw them. You don't hear everyone at a metal concert griping about every little thing like some of the people on the forums do, sure, they all have their own opinions, but they're not yelling out that everything that isn't "x genre" is fucking terrible or else they wouldn't be going to the shows still.

If so, I certainly hope you don't mean Machine Head >.> Because I love Machine Head <.< But yeah, to be honest, I have no idea what "Modern" death metal is, and more importantly, genre arguments are retarded. BAND arguments are relevant, because that's more on the level of what sucks and what doesn't.
Why do you not have a last.fm account :crying:
haha, sorry I usually just use spotify or download
That's your opinion. What the fuck is it with metal people and having half a million genres? I swear to god, there are more metal genres than there are actual bands...
What the fuck is it with metal people and having half a million genres? I swear to god, there are more metal genres than there are actual bands...
Shut your mouth The reason for genres is because, gasp, there is metal out there that sounds different! If you're looking for music that sounds like this: Without genres, this band would be simply "metal". So if you were to ask for more metal, you'd get this: With genres, though, this would be "symphonic metal" (more specifically, "symphonic power metal", but just "symphonic metal" works). So you would ask for more symphonic metal, you'd get this: Understand why genres are important?
The opposite occurs much more. Bands want to fit a "certain" genre so they willingly don't change anything about their sound which leads to well, the idea behind all metal sounding the same.
The opposite occurs much more. Bands want to fit a "certain" genre so they willingly don't change anything about their sound which leads to well, the idea behind all metal sounding the same.
Yeah that's a shameful side effect of it. But it can't be helped. Pretty much anything and everything designed to be good or helpful has side effects to it. I'll be content with the current system; as long as I don't go to encyclopaedia metallum looking for symphonic metal and get goregrind bands, I think it works well enough. (In fact, I think we need more genre separation; the genre of melodic death metal is so damn open that I can spend literally hours going through, like, sixty or so bands, looking for a band with a particular mixture of sounds. In my opinion, the genres are too open as it is :v:)
Of course, pros or cons always exist. I doubt metal cares much about advancement anyway, it's not really what it's for.
Yeah, metal is generally more for the expression of ideas and emotions, rather than progression. Except for progressive metal, I suppose. But that's queer shit, there. :tinfoil:
You don't like prog metal? :saddowns: I love prog. metal, especially prog. death like Opeth and Cynic.
I love prog metal. I just said that to make a scene. You have to admit a lot of prog is pretty out there, though, compared to the rest of metal. It's like the hyperactive child that's jumping all over the place in the family of lazy bums who sit around all day watching television and eating bags of chips/crisps. :v:
