Prog. is a really freaky genre, King Crimson scares me (and seeing as I unhealthily worship Dream Theater, I should probably try to like them, but it's just too daunting lol).
King Crimson and Dream Theater only relation is drums and guitar. That's about it.
King Crimson is much closer to Post-Rock and Alternative Rock. Only their recent albums could be called metal at all, and their recent albums are quite shit.
Did you know Kurt Cobain's major inspiration was King Crimson's Red?

I know their similarities are drums and guitar, and those are two of my three favorite parts of Dream Theater (also keyboards).
That's why I should try to like them, but sweet greasy fuck are they...out there...

No, their similarities are that there's drums and guitar, that's about it.
Robert Fripp has never played anything close to Petrucci's playing. Fripp's always favoured unwestern melodies and an emphasis on rhythm rather than melody.
Their most known drummer was Bill Bruford and Bill Bruford was probably one of the slowest and downtempo drummers of his genre. Dream Theater's playing is more akin to Rush than King Crimson.
King Crimson in fact has more in common with Anthony Braxton's free jazz playing than Dream Theater.

I can hear some of their influence in Dream Theater, but yes, that is about it.
DT takes alot more from Metallica and Rush influence-wise than anything else if you ask me, and I like that.
Anyway, enough derailment >.>
Modern death metal is for those shitty deathcore, "death metal influenced" bands that seem to be the most loved metal genre these days.
Also it could mean death metal made in the last few years, but thats too simple.

Where the fuck have you been living?
There is virtually no one on this board that likes deathcore. And anyone who does tend to also listen to metalcore and mainstream crap. Not to mention the hostilities against deathcore outside this board are, in my own experience, far more hostile than anything we could manage here.
Deathcore is far from the most loved metal genre, unless you mean strictly in the mainstream sense. And even if you mean that, that title belongs to metalcore. :v:

That's just a little bit, most of it is Deathcore, but bleh. I warned you.
I understand that Viraemia has the whole "Deathcore" styled vocals, but their bassist acts as a lead guitarist on his 10 string! That should make up for it. I'd still put them on a show with Dying Fetus and Nile, before I put them in with Whitechapel.

He's not talking about on this board. He is talking about most mainstream people. And indeed deathcore/metalcore is the most popular metal these days to teens unfortunately.

Well, I suppose we could look at it this way. The more metalcore/deathcore that breaks into the mainstream, the more gateway bands we have for people to get into heavier metal. Not to mention, as metalcore and deathcore get more into the mainstream (I can already see this happening; simply looking at trends over the past ten years shows a promising lead into this), we may possibly see heavier metals break into the mainstream as well.
The prediction I made in the "What do you expect the '10s to be known for" thread, while it was mostly in jest, also had a bit of truth to it.
I do see extreme metal slowly coming into the mainstream. At the very least, power metal will become more pronounced, and melodic death metal very well could follow suit and take up the lead with metalcore.

I wouldn't really mind that. I know deathcore is ALMOST absolute shit, but there ARE a few gems out there.
Nobody that I know likes deathcore. At all.

This. Why would I insult this board when I'm fairly new here?
All my friends bar one, listen to deathcore and whatnot and tell me my melodeath and folk metal is pussy metal, so it's very obviously the most popular style(s). At least in Australia and America, most of my music comes from Europe.

Curious.
Over here where I live (granted that Washington doesn't have much a metal scene) metalcore takes center stage. Christian metalcore, for that matter, (and for whatever reason), but metalcore nonetheless. Most people seem to oppose deathcore (except a few posers :v:).
Though I've gotten my core group of friends to enjoy melodic death metal, and they have gotten about ten people each (so about thirty people total) to enjoy melodic death metal as well (by sharing the CDs I burnt them :v:)
It's not much, but it's something.

I don't hate metalcore, or deathcore for that matter, they can be "fun" to listen to on occasion, but obviously it's not the best metal, or even talented or whatever you want to say, but it can be fun. Which is important as far as I'm concerned. No one should really call deathcore or metalcore "deep" genres, but there are some fun bands in there. Apparently, that's not good enough for anyone. It shouldn't be the most popular genre, but it still has a place.

I suppose I'll respect your opinion, but in my opinion, no, it's not fun.
It's not fun at all. At least, it's not fun to me. I don't find mediocrity that not only lies to itself saying that its anything better than what it is but also dethrones more worthy genres that could very easily take the place it was found itself to be fun.
That's like saying harsh noise is fun. Raping my ears isn't fun.
All in my opinion, of course.

That obviously depends on your definition of fun. Deathcore to me seems like simplified death metal with breakdowns (but I'm not an expert on death metal either). It's obviously doing something right, or else nobody would listen to it.
I don't get what you mean by it's lying to itself. It isn't lying about anything. Deathcore bands are deathcore bands and I've never seen a deathcore band represent themselves as death metal even though they were obviously the former.

I've seen it more times than I'd like to admit.
It goes back to that whole "Isn't Modern Death Metal what shitty deathcore bands call themselves?" thing.
Some bands, though, are coming to their senses.
For example - Job For A Cowboy
Great example of deathcore gone deathmetal.
Although...I think it's probably the ONLY example of deathcore gone deathmetal...which means not some bands are coming to their senses but ONE band came to their senses...
Well anyways, Ruination was a decent album for their first actual death metal release. Now, all they have to do is make the songs longer and take more time on the song structure and lyrics and it's all good.
Also, just to point something out:
I like alternative-progressive metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore.

I only listen to classic alt-prog metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore.
Now everyone listens to alt-prog metal-dancecore with some elements of deathwave and gorecore. It's way too popular now and if you listen to it you are a fag.
I love me some deathwave.

Ummm, okay, just to point it out but.
Sybreed and Synthetic Breed are actually separate bands. If I recall correctly, there's also a Synth-Breed as well, and they're also separate.
They all mean the same thing, though Sybreed blow the other two out of the water. Synthetic Breed are actually pretty boring and mediocre, in my opinion.
But maybe that's because Sybreed just set the bar so damn high. (I also prefer Slave Design over their newer albums)

It's fine. It's a common mistake. I see people mistake Sybreed for Synthetic Breed a lot.
(Not really, since no one ever talks about either of them; but about half the time people have talked about them, they get the two confused.)
:buddy:
I see, well now I don't feel so stupid.
(I stick to basically instrumental metal, progressive metal, or death metal)

Yeah, it's a very opinionated debate. I just don't get the point in bashing deathcore to death when it's really, in some cases, a decent genre.

Well if it's decent, I've yet to hear anything decent.
It's like rap. There's no point in bashing it because there are some gems in it, but no one has heard any of them, so they just assume it's a crap genre.
:colbert:
I've seen it more times than I'd like to admit.

I suppose it depends on what group of bands we're talking about, but as far as I know, all of the "popular" deathcore bands like Suicide Silence and Whitechapel and all that have always referred to themselves as deathcore and have never really been considered anything else.
Back on topic, to me modern death metal is just death metal released recently. I'd consider Nile's 'Those Whom the Gods Detest' modern death metal, for instance. Being one of the few (or only?) pure death/techdeath bands I listen to, I honestly couldn't care less about the labels put on bands now.
Also, just to point something out:

I was being facetious.
People wouldn't call metal gay if it didn't have gay names. Heavy Metal isn't gay. Deathwave or metalcore is...

There's some decent rap out there, and it's not too hidden, but it's again, all opinions. I enjoy most music, I can't help it, I just do. But a lot of Deathcore is shit, and some of it isn't. None of it is anything amazing, but does anyone really only listen to music that is spectacular in every way?
I doubt it, if anyone thinks they are, they're fooling themselves.
