All of the main series games are unconnected. They take place in the same universe, but at different points in the timeline, and usually in different parts of the world. There are some easter eggs or references between them but it's not a connected storyline. It's kind of like Persona in that regard if you've played those. I'd recommend playing the holy trinity (4 -> 5 -> Zero) and then playing 6 if you have an Xbox 360.
Ace combat 5 and Zero are pretty heavily connected storywise though
6 gets a bad rap for some of the story elements being a bit cheese but honestly i love it. 6 is probably my 2nd favorite after zero, but liberation of gracemeria is definitely in contention for the best piece of music from the franchise, contested only really by zero/at the border
6 had a real cheesy story but the gameplay was solid and it introduced a lot of neat new ideas and technology to the franchise. And those animations the planes use still make my dick hard to this day. Really it feels like 4,5,0 and 6 where great for different reasons. Assault Horizon was a turd but it still had a great track, one of my favorite peices from that game

Okay, I spent a while overanalyzing the trailer because Ace Combat is crack and I'm an addict. I've got a hunch that the campaign will possibly switch off between Erusea (old geezer) and Osea (some kind of penal squadron?), but Osea will be the good guys at the very least because they can do no wrong. Stonehenge and Arkbird callbacks are sweet, and the (comparatively more) sci-fi theme tickles my pickle. I'm also guessing that the soccer ball riding backseat in the Erusean fighter is some kind of AI (maybe a precursor to Nemo.) That along with the lasers makes me think that AC7 could tie into 3. Something interesting I saw on the HUD was the return of flares from AH. No idea if that means dogfight mode is also returning, but if it does, I can only hope that it's more like Legacy than Assault Horizon. Also, the missile count seems to be somewhat reduced to be closer to what it was in the PS2 days. The F/A-18 at 0:50 has 43 missiles left, and with the player score only at 1600 points, and a drone alone worth 200, it's unlikely they fired too many missiles before that. This would lead me to believe that we're going to see smaller scale battles, nothing like the operations from 6. I'm worried that the plot might be the same sort of tripe that we were treated to in 5 & 6. Maybe I am only saying this because the series only does well narratively when it uses unconventional storytelling methods (4's letter, Zero's documentary) and this appears to be the opposite, but my fingers are crossed that the story doesn't detract from the gameplay too much.
I can't wait to get behind the controls of an SU-37.. I love that damn plane. I haven't played an Ace Combat game since highschool (Zero, most recently) but the stories always captured my imagination. They're so well written. Jesus I remember taking care of a falling satellite.. helping resupply a certain orbiting fortress and then later having to shoot it down.. stopping an entire enemy fleet. It all felt so grand and important. Someday I'm going to buy an Xbox360 just so I can play 6. The sky really does appeal to the romantic nature of humans, even if it means having to struggle for control of it.
I hope this one has a good soundtrack. That was what made AC3 great for me, among other things. Its pretty much the only iteration of the series that I've been interested it, there's just kind of a unique personality to it that even goes a little further than just the setting and story. I have so much nostalgia for this game, 7 can never hope to live up to it. AC3 just nailed so many details, like the Menu design which just looked so fucking cool in PS1 resolution. Especially playing the japanese release years later and discovering the whole cut story aspect. Suddenly it was not just a fun and stylish arcade flight shooter but an actual fully realized game. I hope we're in for more of that, I have such a fucking boner for AC3. I haven't replayed it in ages because of how inconvenient it is to read the translation along with the game. At this point I'm alomst convinced I'd be underwhelmed if I replayed it :V

I find it a little annoying that a lot of people decided to give Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy a miss on the 3ds, it has NOTHING to do with the Assault Horizon universe and is in fact a remake of Ace Combat 2 and its great. It was renamed for the west because ???

Was that a space elevator?
Was there ever an AC game that didn't have a good soundtrack?
Joint Assault had some soundtrack dissonance for me and some people don't like it I guess. This plays when you fight a superweapon at night and all I get is tons of melancholic feelings, which is kinda weird for a fight like that or what the fuck is even this. I like it, but it's still weird in context where it plays
Well, they also had economic reasons it wasn't just a simple revenge plan.
well the annexation of southern belka was bullshit, honestly the grey men just went about it wrong in typical ace combat fashion
I wonder just how much money it costs to build one of these super weapons. If Belka hadn't decided to build excalibur... All im saying is that it doesn't seem practical and cost effective to build the eye of mordor, just to have it bombed to death by the one guy. Seeing how Osea is coming back, I wonder if they ever got around to building another Ark Bird...
Excalibur was meant as a missile defense system, probably would have worked well at it seeing how underdeveloped nuclear weapons are in Strangereal. XB-0 was a useless piece of shit though.

One Fuel Air Explosive and it just drops like a rock, it's sad but hilarious. AC5 is the king of cheese, it's glorious. How well does AC4 emulate now? I tried it a while ago and once i got up to Lifeline things started to act rather funny. Do you use software or hardware?
Damn. I bought a used copy of ac4 for ps2, and just got my hands on a firends old ps2 to use. Problem is that the disk is unreadable even on a good day, and his ps2 has an incredibly slow/finicky reader. I don't want to play 5/0 before playing the best one. Gotta look around somemore for ac4 without bullshit prices.

While its still fresh in my mind. DANCE WITH AN ANGEL MOMMY
Anyone know how well 2/4 emulates? Never played AC before.
Pretty much flawlessly now.
Pretty much flawlessly now.
4 still seems to have some issues in hardware mode. Like the player's aircraft will be completely black but others will be fine.
Anyone know how well 2/4 emulates? Never played AC before.
04 had serious trouble in hardware mode on my laptop (i7qm, GTX 750 sli, 8gb), and software mode ran too slow for me(about 20fps.) Granted this was a year ago so take my experience with a grain of salt. It also had the black planes issue and major terrain flickering in hardware. Frame rate was fine in hardware but the flickering gave me a headache. AC2 is basically perfect to emulate; we've had emulators since the late 90's that can play it fine on a Pentium 3. I've had it emulating on an Atom powered tablet at full speed.

chandelier was built pre-ulysses but wasn't finished in time so estovakia got wrecked honestly they were pretty dumb though since who the hell builds a giant railgun and then shoots shots containing cruise missiles out of it what the hell
