hey catbarf, i'm planning on making a standalone GL similar to this, but with a pistol grip and a single tube. What was the width of the PVC that you used? And could you throw your trigger design my way via PM or something? It'd make everything easier. The Engineer Way.
It's 1.5" PVC. Do note that while this PVC will fit the front half of a shell, the rear half won't chamber. You need to sand out the interior- with a Dremel it took about five to ten minutes per barrel, but it'll likely take a lot longer if you have to do it by hand.
As for the trigger assembly, the first two pictures in this post show pretty much all you need. Basically all you need is for the triggers themselves to press against a horizontally-moving block. Be careful with your traversal ratios (distance from trigger finger to axle versus distance from top of trigger piece, where it meets the firing pin, to axle), 1:1 seems to work pretty well in this application. This is why the lower pin has a weird shape; the contact point with the trigger needs to be as far away from the axle as possible or the traversal ratio gets weird and you end up with like a 1" trigger pull to fire the thing.
It's an extraordinarily simple mechanism. Building a single-shot pistol gripped version would be a piece of cake, which is why I'm thinking I want to build a pistol next. 95% of the work on this project was just laboriously cutting and sanding pieces to fit properly, and most of the complication came because I wanted the lower barrel to be positioned weirdly relative to the triggers.
Thanks! With the expansion of my arsenal, the desire for a 40mm GL has grown. I might not even need to make one, seeing as i'm acquiring back_slash's XM, but i think standalones can look much cooler, depending on how they're made.
Yeah, this project isn't necessarily the most practical in the world given that underbarrel ones are about as effective, but it's a good bit more useful than an M79 IMO without much additional inconvenience. The main reason I want to build a pistol next is so that I can always have a football on me for room-clearing, no matter how 'light' I'm running. I could buy an S-Thunder but those are real expensive for what they are, and I don't like them aesthetically.

I know what you mean. The only issue is that with an underbarrel, it's very obviously not a good platform for a 40mm/football combination, as it'd take a while to load, and be impossible to load via your method of using paper.
On another note, you should make a shotgun(counting GLs here, as they're basically shotguns in the shot and slug sense) only loadout, and have one of those 40mm bandoleers across your chest.
a Maruzen, highlander, the GL pistol, and the goblin pistol. Perf. Watch the cowards run in fear as they hear the multiple thumps of 40mms and shotguns, as you crest a hill and launch 2 footballs at the fleeing masses of CODkiddies.
Yes.

Definitely. However, for what it's worth, I believe the paper cartridge could still work, since it would bend where the football meets the shell. Still a total pain in the ass, and using a cartridge is really the only way to have a ribbon-tail on the football.

The only problem with this is that the GL isn't allowed at the CQB field I play at, and the shotgun isn't useful at the woods field I play at. But I have a friend sewing a 40mm bandolier for me, and this coming weekend I'm planning on running the Highlander with my M60 for Hazardous Containment.
I'm going to get shot at by both these things
Unless I can get woodland pants before then
Plastic bukkake
Looks great! I really like how the gunmetal finish turned out.
Your 40mm paper cartridge idea is awesome too- I will have to try that. :)
I feel like I can't take nice pictures of guns because I don't have a wooden porch to lie them on.
I know you guys are probably getting sick of me bumping this thread, but for the sake of keeping the thread 'complete' for anyone who stumbles onto it from outside our group I've got the promised firing video.

dude that is totally rad
That was badass, damn, I want that. How long did it take to build?
well if the thread was started 3 weeks ago, and he finished 1 week ago...
Actually all the construction was done in exactly one week.
