This is clearly different, it is an example of a diverse art form used to tell many different stories in different genres. Just because it's drawn doesn't mean it's for children.
I feel like the dumb rating is sometimes used without appropriate context as a means of hard disagreement without discussion
I see plenty of totally reasonable posts that get dumbed but also no one actually seems to disagree with it at all
Like it'll have plenty of agree's and then a single dumb. Always by someone who is afraid of actually saying anything at all.
I like I have no problem with it but I wish more people actually said something when they disagree'd with someone.
Ratings are totally needed that being said
I also see this happen a lot (not with my own posts just so you know, they are really good), I always thought ratings discourage serious discussion because people both don't feel the need to comment because the opinion is CLEARLY dumb, or are afraid to express their opposing opinion it in fear of getting showered with boxes (and a lot of people deeply care about ratings, it's just human to seek understanding). It's still better for discussion than Reddit's system which burrows unpopular opinions, but our ratings sure make people a lot more eager to hop on a bandwagon.
If you're not comfortable having your avatar as your phone background, and having it be visible on public transport then please don't have it as your avatar.
I don't think that is a good measure of 'what is my limit' at all. There are tons of people who are completely shameless and would totally use some actual porn as their phone background

i think it's a really good measure. if you wouldn't want someone to see your avatar out of context in public you shouldn't have it as your avatar.

Then phrase it as what the average person wouldn't want to be visible on public transport.
Avatar rules like that shouldn't even need to be explained. How old are you people? Use your common sense and you'll be fine.
You'd think so but that's not detailed enough for this community it seems
Then phrase it as what the average person wouldn't want to be visible on public transport.
There's a reason convictions are based on "reasonable doubt" and not just doubt.
Obviously, there's people who wouldn't care about using porn avatars on their phone. But that's far from the average non-NEET with a social life.
I mean we're gonna ban people who break the rules. If they're not breaking the rules, we're not gonna ban them lol.
I think I haven't made my point clear, sorry. It's really late here :v:
In this case the rules will be interpreted by the mods because as you've already said, this isn't a white/black kind of issue.
And my point is that it seems there's a group of people that get off off getting away with cropped porn and explicit shit by cutting enough of it that they can't be banned for it but you can tell what the source of the avatar is.
Avatar rules like that shouldn't even need to be explained. How old are you people? Use your common sense and you'll be fine.
You greatly overestimate the social awaraness of an average Facepunch user.
I don't think that is a good measure of 'what is my limit' at all. There are tons of people who are completely shameless and would totally use some actual porn as their phone background
It's a common sense measure though, right? So if you have someone exceptional who doesn't understand what the vast majority deem acceptable, then it should be fine to just say to them "look, this isn't the best avatar, here is why", and ask them to change it. If they persist then they get banned. If they're doing it on intentionally, and we know they know the rules/should know better then bans should be used outright.

I'd like to point out that its less about heavily dumbed posts that deserve it clearly, and more posts that are for example, stating a fact or something with tons of agree's getting a single dumb.
It's about the people that kind of, never actually have an opinion on anything, and my disappointment in them expressing their disagreement. What I want is the 1 person that disagree's to say something and go against the 10 people that agree. What if the fact that someone posted is missing the point, and so is everyone else? etc etc
People being afraid of posting something stupid because they get boxes is really either a matter of them caring waaay too much, or a matter of them having harmfully stupid opinions

If mods begin cracking down more on it most people will eventually get it. And even to those who can't infer what's acceptable, bans are warnings.
My main takeaway from all this is that the peek behind the curtains is fascinating. I was always under the impression that the mods were on the same page. This kinda makes me look at some of them in a new light.
I'd kill to read the chatlogs during the Voldemort crisis.

That'd be a good thing.
The only thing more low-effort and obnoxious than the "ban anime" stuff is the 'ironic' bids for mod that people try to slide through on every page
Ill be honest, Im genuinely surprised a lot of people here browse facepunch on their phones publicly.
Ive always kind of figured that internet forums are something you just keep to yourself and try to avoid drawing any kind of attention to publicly.

Waiting for the comedic genius to combine those two in his post

Sometimes you might not want to even bother, what's actually the point if you think nobody's going to even bother to hear you out? Toss a dumb rating and walk along if you think it's a stupid post. FP isnt a hivemind but it can circlejerk on a lot of shit and most of the time it's not worth the effort.

What, why?
Do you think if someone saw you browsing it'd make you uncool or something? Like idgi.

Why? It's not actually that weird depending on the threads you go to. I'll even post on my laptop in lecture.
im gay

reasonable enough tbh
I'm guessing the reason I wouldn't understand it is because I don't share the anxiety of 'being attacked' that some users might feel. I am totally shameless most of the time and its totally normal to end up sometimes getting tanked on and accepting it. I'm never too worried about it though.
The way I see it is, if I get a few dumbs then maybe I just said something controversial.
But if my post is like 69x dumb, 9x disagree, 3x disagree and 2x useful I should probably look at what I posted because chances are I posted something that if not outright dumb, is built on shaky logic or pretensions.
Getting box forts during the 2016 election season made me look at my posts more critically.

Stop writing a reply midway through and just rating the post because you can't bother writing a full answer, specially when the user you're replying to posted something really dumb. Classic
We're not getting rid of ratings any time soon or ever, so I'd try not to take them too seriously. If someone's not gonna bother to respond to your post and give you a dumb instead, chances are, you probably didn't wanna talk to them anyway lol.

Not always really, but it's good to evaluate what you're saying if it's controversial. Though, bullshit can often slip by unnoticed because it didn't get box forted. Don't trust FP to know what's correct and not.
I like getting disagree forts, it says you wrote something everyone thinks is wrong but gosh you wrote it in such a nice way they won't dumb you.
Avatar rules like that shouldn't even need to be explained. How old are you people? Use your common sense and you'll be fine.
Common sense is a lot less common than you'd think.
[editline].[/editline]
And much more subjective than you'd think.
Fp is easily one of the more sensible forums to browse in public tbh, even moreso than common stuff like twitter, facebook, and tumblr (especially tumblr) because of the relative lack of eye-catching images
A spark starts a flame.
Getting a few dumb ratings, lets say 10, and then getting mad and lets say, you respond to the dumb ratings calling them all cowards, it's gonna escalate. Alot.
This happens on forums alot. Discord cliques related to them often talk shit about people on forums, then drama starts because someone outside of the clique catches wind of it.
Instead of making the user feel like a massive fucking idiot who has done everything wrong and has commited crimes against facepunch like most forums without post ratings, facepunch has learned that alot of Dumb ratings can equal a lesson. Alot of dumb ratings/boxforts also make people less intimidated by you as a whole and probably less likely to reply to you. So, the problem solves itself.

the opposite of ratings is people posting "I agree" and holy shit is that annoying
Most people are very comfortable with whatever they get rated. I like having ratings enabled because I can use it as a means of seeing if I fucked up or not.

I think a better way would be to say "Would you be OK with your boss and parents seeing this and having to explain to them what it is".
There are plenty of people that are ok with public nudity, I'm sure even more are ok with public porn.

I always kind of figured a lot of people use internet forums simply so they could say things they wouldnt otherwise say.
If you draw attention to your own internet persona, I feel that would make me more self-conscious about the kind of things I post or the kind of threads I browse which is exactly the reason I would be here in the first place.
