I only granted the title, I don't remember who asked me to do it
You're still involved in the situation since you enabled it to happen. To take administrative action in someone you enabled to happen means you will have bias. And frankfully, if that is the level of criticism of your own actions (not anyone elses) that makes you drop a banhammer, I would not call you fit to be a moderator outright. As far as criticism goes, that was probably the more civil ones I've ever seen. To think someone would ban someone over something that could only be described as "blunt" and not only that, but to be the judge when you're the victim? Golly, I'm appalled at such behaviour.
I thank you for your input but it is clear that you have no real understanding of this forum's culture or our moderation style.
I moderate on an entire community where I've been called a nigger, kike and faggot semi regularly. I'd argue I have dignity in my moderation in such a hostile environment. Excellence in moderation and in values is irrespective of your community background. To add to that, I have never banned someone for saying that shit to me. Take that as you will.
To try and move focus of this multiple-page-shitfest, do we have an ETA on when we can expect the donation system to start?
I am looking into setting up a Paypal account for ease of donations, once that is done I imagine we'd be able to open it. I had originally planned to do some events in tandem with the launch but we're really behind on planning these so all of them may not happen. I'm aiming for next weekend, hopefully.
If you get called slurs semi-regulary, you aren't doing your job very well.
The server we run doesn't ban expletives and that draws the most "special" players out. When you actually have to talk personally to why you're banning someone and for how long, they tend to get upset despite your ban reason being because they ruined someone else's game. It might be a different ballpark rather than you pressing a ban button with just a reason based on the posts in the thread rather than having to ask why someone did X and their reasoning. If we just banned people based on reports, you would be banning people for playing the game itself. Think more like being a moderator for dark-rp but there's no voice chat so you can't hear kids screaming at you. It's more like that than just forum administration, it's a different beast but the principles should remain the same.
Why have you put the word special in quotation marks? Are you being disablist?
We've actually had to deal with people who I think suffered paranoia and other mental illnesses. Believe it or not, I was the one who kept telling other staff to not make their lives any worse. But it's much more that I've dealt with some very difficult folks before and I couldn't think of a nicer way of phrasing it. To add, I don't think Hezzy is any more interested in debating as to what is and isn't good standards of moderation. I might be not the same due to some fundamental differences as to what I moderate, but I still think everyone entrusted with mod should be doing their best to remain impartial, to treat users fairly and to the standards you yourself would want to be treated as. Personally, I don't feel the same standard I try to apply myself coming from someone like Hezzy, but alas, I am not a user of facepunch so this might very well be the standard treatment.
I thank you for your input but it is clear that you have no real understanding of this forum's culture or our moderation style.
Hezzy, I feel that most of the time you are a swell moderator but you have these moments where you just blow off any criticism by wearing a dozen layers of irony or something. Im not sure if theres something going on irl making you sour or if its the constant dumb bickering around these forums that put you in a bad mood, but at times like this, you gotta take a breath and ask if your post will look funny or just plain condescending. But thats just my take on it, im personally not a big fan of "jokes on you, I was pretending to be a X" humor, so take this as you will.
I don't see the mod sass here.
The ban lasted for 12 minutes only which is good, I think it was Hezzy making a joke by acting petty. Entirely different question whether the joke was good or not.. Banning people as a joke is still a dick move, in my opinion.
I will say that, I'm actually glad despite the responses, you've actually tried to speak to me rather than just ban me for mod disrespect. You must do try to be a good moderator rather than just huff the fumes of the powertrip, and that alone makes you have values and standards. Hezzy, hold yourself to the same standards you want others on the forum to treat you. I assure you, you do that and you cannot go wrong on that alone. And for the rest of the times that you do make honest mistakes and you get a bit heated, say things you feel a bit bad about and you think that the ban was unjustified, have the humility to apologise for it and move on and swear to yourself "I'll try to do better." Do both of those things, and you will be doing the best you can ever hope to do as a moderator.
Moderator's behaviour has been appalling in this thread. You seem to understand the moderation side of things just fine (apart from the hypocrisy) - but you guys forget you should also be representative of users on this forum as well. If the community bring forward issues with the forum (such as avatars for example), and you can see an overwhelming support for these suggestions, then you should take them seriously. One of you guys said in an earlier post something along the lines of "well you don't understand the forum culture on here". Correct me if I'm wrong, but every user on this forum is a part of the culture of this forum. Without us there is no forum. Take the suggestions we're making seriously. At the very least give a nice debate on why you believe what people are saying shouldn't happen instead of making a huge joke out of it. You might say it's no big deal about the avatar, but that goes both ways. Why is it such a big deal to impose a reasonable size limit on your avatars? Like come on guys, step it up.

I had originally considered that calling the moderator team petty was mod sass but decided that it was done in a civil tone and lifted it. I am currently on holiday and haven't perhaps put the usual amount of effort into my posts that I usually would. I apologise to everybody reading this if they've come across as a bit terse or ironic. I am open to discussion about moderation. I have moderated this forum for close to a decade now, as well as holding similar positions of responsibility across the internet as well as in real life. I believe I have a wide breadth of experience in these matters. I value impartiality. However, I disagree with your earlier assessment in that my implementation of Alice's title compromised my impartiality. I merely carried out a forum function, with no real opinion on it. I considered the title to be a joke and it was in keeping with the culture that this forum has established over the past 12 years. I can see how you perhaps may not understand this, having only apparently registered mere hours ago. I champion transparency and accountability; this is the whole point of this thread, for users of this forum to voice their concerns and for me to address them. Many positive changes were brought about on the forums as a direct result of user's feedback. Granted, some of the replies from moderators in this thread have been less than stellar, and I will be addressing this in private. If I was not interested in debating moderation, I would close this thread and permaban anybody critical of the moderator team. This has not happened. People have been banned in this thread before, but not for expressing opinions, but rather for doing it disrespectfully. Our entire moderation team are volunteers and at the very least should be treated with respect. The sole purpose of the moderation team is to ensure the quality of this forum is maintained and improved upon and this thread is a vital tool. We have traditionally taken a stern approach to moderation, favouring banning users over verbal warnings. It is one of the ways that I feel that our moderation style is unique. Granted, there are improvements to be made to our current moderation style. I feel that our current approach to moderation can be somewhat inconsistent. Previously, we had rules and guidelines for new moderators, but these were discarded some years ago. The current style is rather ad-hoc, and I will be writing guidelines to address this; covering specifics for moderation as well as the general ethics of a moderator.
What does the moderator forum section look like
What does the moderator forum section look like
Like Mordor, but kinda rusty. [editline]27th August 2017[/editline] The gates only work half the time because lol vBulletin.
-snip-
Honestly, good shit all around in that post. I had pegged you were bamming me up but trying to shout at you over what is pretty much small fry to the other questionable actions would have been detrimental. I'm glad you've listened to what I've had to offer and that you are personally trying to take actions to rectify the criticisms posted in the thread. Ultimately, everyone should try to improve themselves and their actions. I was actually gonna rate up your post previously since you were very forward and actually showing that improvement I wanted. Honestly dude, I have no hard feelings against you for this shit, I respect anyone who wants to do something about their issues rather than block out the criticisms. I know personally how easy it is to get ticked off and make bad decisions, so to chew you out for trying to improve would be incredibly hypocritical and probably more importantly, actually discourage self improvement.
-snip- probably isn't a joke worth making. low hanging fruit.
