because the coins have value and it'll cause people to create posts specifically to get coins. best case scenario it encourages thread sniping
This has nothing to do with being an echo chamber.
Besides that thread sniping/posting for zingers has been bannable for awhile now. I really doubt that'll change, especially with the way that coins are being implemented.
Gamifying a website seems really 2008 to me
I think it's going to take several months of refinements and bug fixes before the new site is ready for prime time. I couldn't figure out how to search posts on it.

so does the website 🤭
I don't see why coins couldn't just be acquired over time as long as you've been active in like a year
That wouldn't encourage any extraneous or forced actions on behalf of the userbase
How about instead of coins we bring back the smartness system and use that as currency
Incentivise better posting, get rewards.

Post smarter, not harder.
It looks to me like there's less and less people coming here every year, lots people could have left in 2015 to protest the forums removal of the other sections, but I doubt it. I think people are moving on.

forums in general are kinda on the way out
Is there anyway to check if my linked account on Newpunch exists or not? Because I vaguely remember making one for newpunch but i'm not sure how i'd log into it

Okay, so you're talking about an idiot cull that will get bad users banned. Doesn't seem like a problem.
It would be funny if bans deducted coins. Hell, make the bans take away a god damn percentage that increases the longer you're on the forum. Make it hurt.
Excuse me sir. Are you making me file my coin taxes?
Yes sir. Every time you ban a person you are entitled to a percentage of their coins. I'm just trying to make sure I get the right amount to all the moderators.
Oh, it's that time of year again.
I'll give newpunch 5 months before Garry "Attention span of a frying pan" Newman abandones it.
it happenened before (lab), it's happening now (unreal engine sandbox game) and it will happen again.
Hope the kids won't grow into supervilains.

Layla is still working on the sandbox game, and consistent progress has been made on the forums.

'Consistant Progress' has been made on the forums about 3-4 times now
Matt and I were criticising it last night
It still just feels subpar with the current design choices being made
Excuse me sir. Are you making me file my coin taxes?
i do not consent to taxes i am a sovereign citizen of facepunch.com
I'm still wishing for an official API. :frown:

Quality is different from frequency. I think that it's silly to think the new forums aren't going to happen.

but that would destroy my entire apathetic persona i've tirelessly cultivated over several years and thousands of posts oh noooooooooooooooooooo
Quality is different from frequency. I think that it's silly to think the new forums aren't going to happen.
Yes, no doubt it would happen
With each attempt it gets better
but it's nearly not close enough to something that actually feels like a core improvement to something that hasn't really been updated since 2009.
As a forum software, garry's solution is not really bad
For a facepunch replacement, I just can't see it yet
[editline]31st October 2017[/editline]
Hell, I would have worked on labpunch if garry actually opened up the git
forums in general are kinda on the way out
And being replaced with what exactly?
Things do have to be replaced for it to die out of fashion, generally people don't use forums as often as they used it. Some forums are still really popular but in general it's not as popular as it used to be.
And being replaced with what exactly?
reddit and facebook groups mostly. by forums I mean the traditional classic forum such as facepunch, stuff like 4chan and reddit isn't dying any time soon.
Honestly it doesn't look good. I think virtually all the choices are ultimately going to serve to turn people away from the new forums in general - and they are already kind of declining.
reddit and facebook groups mostly. by forums I mean the traditional classic forum such as facepunch, stuff like 4chan and reddit isn't dying any time soon.
pretty much
the way we handle discussions is changing. For better or worse can be determined by the individual.
A lot of groups moving to real-time messaging systems for very in-the-moment or Real Time discussions
Groups also just creating discussion points on popular platforms (as mentioned Reddit).
Social Media is very handy at getting in contact with PR or CMs
Forums these days usually require a lot of technical work to setup and keep alive, in comparison to these alternative solutions. Which makes them less popular for groups that cannot dedicate the resources to them.
Nvidia Australia opened up their facebook group at least six months ago, which for many people would be beneficial since it's already providing all of their wanted content in one directory.
I still really only use a few forums that I feel comfortable lying around.
4Chan's great to me because it's anonymous, only reason why it would die is if mootwo runs out of hosting dollars
You'll have to trust garry with the coins and the forum migration. Complain after it's done.
The alternative he presented is that he dumps the entire forum and community to Hezzy/whoever and I'm pretty convinced that'd kill the forum activity for real (I hope I'm wrong).
Is FP 2.0 going to have a birthday message system that actually works?

Last time it displayed the message was like 3-4 years ago.
We've been discussing the problems that gamification may pose with regards to posting habits, such as incentivising bad posting habits, and methods and changes to counter such things; so yeh, don't worry about that too much but feel free to continue to provide feedback on those ideas.
