I currently go to a community college but I'm planning to transfer to UC Davis as an aerospace engineering major
Physicists make a bit over $100,000 a year at the median. And potentially plenty more if you're well-published.
I failed trig in high school and I'm doing fine with it now.
No. Some Ph.D's in Physics make that, but very few Bachelor's or Master's will make that (unless lucky and/or go to some top-shot school w/ great connections). And considering that you are talking about academia, the chances become even slimmer to make the 6 digits without a Ph.D and an impressive resume.
No harm in trying
Except that it costs like $50 to apply.
And yeah, nobody was mentioning like Yale or Harvard. But I meant more like the people in New York applying for a university in California. I don't know how people can afford out of state rates when they could stay in state.

Might go to Purdue university don't know exactly what to major.
My friend from high school is going to Purdue. He got rejected from University of Illinois. :v:
He's majoring in Aerospace Engineering, so maybe his choice of college matters enough to pay for out of state tuition. I can get a crappy Computer Science degree anywhere, so I'll go someplace cheap.
University of Illinois is perhaps a better engineering university than Purdue is btw.
One of my biology teachers runs a swordsmanship class and is preety cool guy(he plays the Warhammer games and is basically a preety cool guy we all can relate to). The class consists of going to the gymnasium and learning about the swords and sparring with them(Plastic models not actual metal ones V:v:V)
Im on the basketball team and we go to the gymnasium to play pickup games. Whenever the swordsmanship class is there all the ignorant black people on the team start laughing and say stupid shit like "those niggas look like they gonna go slay a dragon". Makes me rage a little inside.
I'm a junior in high school, shit GPA so far, but I yet to take the ACT.
I have no idea what I want to do or where I want to go. I have a horrible feeling that I'm headed nowhere.
If you're interesting in aerospace engineering you should consider Embry Riddle. It's pretty cool up here in Prescott.
Applied to UT Austin and UC Davis, SD, SC, LA, and Berkeley.
Only got into UCSC, but that's cool cause it's one of the best public institutions in the nation for the field I want to go into (Astronomy and the like).

I thought it was a given I was talking about PhDs because good luck finding well-paying work with a physics Bachelor's.
I said the median physicist makes that. Not the median high school physics teacher.

never think that.
if you think that then you will head no where. I came out of high school with an awful GPA. Once you graduate go to a local college and figure out what you want to do, you've got plenty of time. Make sure you take college seriously or it will kick your ass.
I never meet any aerospace engineers IRL but on facepunch there's a lot. Future of humanity represent
You forgot to put in Purdue.
Is it true if you have the money, they will take you in at USC?
Is it true if you have the money, they will take you in at USC?
or if you can play football
All the people I know that are going into engineering are going into mechanical or electrical engineering
I'm only a sophomore in high school but I'm already incredibly concerned about college. Probably because the colleges I want to go to are:
NYU
George Washington University
UBC
USC
I'm mainly looking into political science, but my grades certainly don't reflect my aspirations (3.4 GPA, was a 3.7 last year) but thankfully I've got plenty of community service and extracurricular activities to cover those bases.
I suppose it also helps that my parents are incredibly well connected.
Is it true if you have the money, they will take you in at USC?
Pretty much. My cousin was rejected from UCLA, but managed to get into USC easily. Only problem is, it's pretty damn expensive, especially for her parents living as teachers.
GWU is super fucking expensive and not as good a school as you'd hope for the cost.
Community college for me!
This really shows me how much I need to get started on college. I've had every chance to, but I just keep being lazy. Well, hopefully I can change that this summer...
I'm a junior in high school. I have a pretty solid GPA and ACT score. I've been thinking a lot about colleges lately, but it seems to me that going to college is kind of a waste of money. There are a lot of people right now that went out, got degrees and still can't find a job.
Being unemployed and having a huge student loan isn't where I want to be in 5-10 years...

You might as well not even bother doing a science if you don't intend to take it through to a Ph.D. All you can really do then is be a teacher, or a lab assistant more or less.
If you're gonna do a science you go all the way and get a doctorates in the field.

being unemployed and without a college degree isn't a great position either

How about Engineering Physics? That's pretty much what everyone else are picking here in Sweden, when they want to study physics. It's a very demanding 5 year programme, which leads to a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree. Most people doing it ends up working in the consulting business and some continues to research for their Ph.D a couple of years more.
It's not pure physics, but you can pick a Theoretical Physics master course and after that I think you're on par with most physics students, if not even better as you are better at solving problems due to the engineering background of the studies.

I picked Computer Engineering and Engineering Physics as my two first choices, both located at the same school. Can't wait until I get a response.
Applied to one university, the best university (college for you yanks) in Australia.
Got in.
Only pay ~$5,000 USD a year for undergrad degree, over 3 years.
What do you yanks pay for your undergrad, and how long do they tend to be?
Lol it ranges anywhere from cheap community college to $50000+ a year
Oh shit, two weeks time left to apply. I don't need to worry about getting in; most universities take in anyone who got enough points in the relevant matriculation exams. If I choose to study math, I can get anywhere.
I just don't know where to study. Or whether I want to major in math or physics.
Gotta love the Finnish education system. I don't need to pay anything; instead I'll be paid as long as I keep studying.
Stanford is my dream. Sociology ftw.
Anyone in the US know of any great humanities colleges?

I'm Canadian, but when I was originally planning on taking Mechanical Engineering I was looking at around $8500/year for 4 years, not counting living expenses
I've seen a few people in this thread picking the college they want before they know what they want to major in - why are you doing this? Don't go to university for the sake of going, don't even go for career prospects, go because they have something you're interested in and want to learn more about.
I'm doing Electrical Engineering with a possible minor in Business.
[editline]27th March 2011[/editline]
Also even if you don't know what you want to do declare a major anyway, because departmental scholarships are VERY nice.

~$30,000 a year here, plus ~$10,000 for room and board.
Not very fun.

Holy christ are you going to med school or something
