Is this when I shill about just giving up and merging SH and Polidicks back together.
Since the point I think was to separate politics so people could calm down, but that doesn't even actually seem to be working, and there's so much diffusion into SH too.
On the one hand, some of the reasons to make a separate politics sub-board never materialized. Things like closer moderation to create more structured debate, a reduction in the "echo chamber", and that people would post more "light hearted" or funny news in SH. The latter of which being particularly ironic because if anything the exact opposite has happened, giving people an area to push their political agendas in a space that doesn't require nearly as strict sourcing.
On the other hand, one of the arguments against separating it was that Trump news would eventually slow down and it's clear that isn't going to be the case any time soon.

Speaking as someone who didn't want them split and posts often in both sections, I don't mind the status quo, but any argument to reduce ratings is one I'd agree with.
It also weeded out people who liked to snigger at jokes tho didn't it
Is it just me or is this joke getting old?

When smartness comes back we're banning "snigger" instead of "nigger"

I don't want to go on about this but I just noticed that most of the things on my list I'm the only person to rate? Have you been stalking me or something? Wtf?

holy fuck I think he has. I think this guy has been building up that list for months because unless there's a plugin that allows you to see what someone has been rating, he'd have to have compiled that just by keeping a tab on every thread where someone rates a post in a manner he doesn't like. You couldn't even have found that by checking post history either.
Headhumpy, why?
fuck i hope im not on headhumpys mysql database for rating that one post funny im gonna be so fucked

There's no plugin I know like that exists, so either he manually does it, or he has a spider/bot to do him for it, either way, it means quite a lot of work has gone behind it.
Oh my days.
The power of Adderall.
Who look at this situation and thinks "You know what, this is how things are supposed to be! Let's start a witch hunt to ban people that we didn't even know weren't upstanding members of the forum a day ago!"?

I made a bot that spiders for ratings out of curiosity (after joking about making a plugin that makes shitty poster's posts smaller) and while checking for ratings is easy, you can't exactly do anything related to sentiment analysis to determine whether a thread is about a good or a bad event... so even if he did make a spider, he'd still have to manually filter out the threads that were about fucked up stuff, and then from there further compile lists of users.
ayy facepunch keeps automatically logging me out every time I close out all my facepunch tabs. is this a new "feature" for security reasons or is it likely something just on my end?

currently the only addons I have on my chrome are uBlock and Scriptsafe. uBlock is blocking something and Scripsafe has nothing blocked

Not happening for me.
I think that banning people for mentioning ratings isn't the best idea, personally. U mean, if you aren't allowed to say anything about them ever, then they hardly add to discussions other than helping people form kneejerk reactions.

get a cookie editor and change the facepunch cookies to expire at a certain date, instead of Session Close
Honestly I think the topical ratings ban is stupid, and I think caring about ratings is also really stupid. Ratings shouldn't be a ban worthy offense unless the user is literally spamming ratings, and tbh even then I really don't personally care but spam is spam technically.
IMO the solution is to apply "don't care about ratings" universally and just downplay their already minor role on the forums even further. Because seriously, who cares if a few edge lords are rating tragedy funny, it's a stupid 16x16 image. If they want to post edgy shit in those threads than yeah ban them for sure, but if you're triggered by a stupid 16x16 representation of some angsty kid's opinion on an internet forum, you're ultimately the one with a bigger problem.
year after year we have this discussion

So how about we repeal the SH rule because caring about ratings is dumb. Also it's not being even enforced properly so there is no real reason to have it. Might as well just flip a coin for anyone who rates for on a "Dead" thread to see if he gets a ban.
Is there a particular reason we use http://www.xboxlc.com for the XBL profile links (these guys )? It seems really out of date - it doesn't update for newer games (like, I've been playing Cuphead and that doesn't show up); the "add friend", "send message", and "view profile" buttons don't work; and some of the language on the site implies it hasn't been updated since the Xbox 360 days.
I don't know of any alternatives but if anyone cares it might be something to look into replacing.

If it can be replaced, it's not hard to move it to a working site

do all these people, including a mod and myself(not to be the attention whoring type, but im a little over a month out from a loved one committing suicide and i still stand by that rating), think suicide is funny? no. what was funny was that countless users posted and complained about how that rating made them feel sad, and countless users got banned for caring about ratings meanwhile the mods banned people for ratings.
Reading that thread was painful. What's the difference between rating something tragic like that funny, and making a post about it being funny? Ratings are a feature on this forum for a reason. And what's funny about people being banned for criticizing disgusting ratings?
You spent way too much time on this and I feel like you need someone to tell you that what you are doing is not healthy.
I spent about an hour looking through the past 20 pages of SH for threads where the main rating was friendly, looked for edgy ratings, and manually filtered it by users who showed up more than a few times.
Rules should be consistent. My point in making that post is either you start banning all these people who consistently make edgy ratings, or you get rid of the rule.

Thanks for providing an example I couldn't possibly be arsed to dig up. As I said in my first post, these kinds of ratings either comes from assholes - or low-key trolling. If you want to talk about consistency, why not that trolling has been bannable for a long ass time.
The idea that "every rule has to be applied consistently or else somehow the whole system breaks" is just wrong. Even if it's applied incidentally when a mod feels like it, I doubt many innocent users are gonna be caught in the crossfire. There are even real world examples of rules that always exist but are only enforced incidentally - many people speed on the highway, but people only get a speeding ticket once in a while. Does that make speeding tickets inherently unfair? No, because you still broke the law, even if not everyone who's speeding is caught every time. In reality, we're talking fractions of infractions when it comes to speeding.
I guess I just really don't see the issue of people once in a while getting banned for what is obviously deliberately trying to bait other people into reacting - the OP of the jet plane thread even put the rating in the OP.
If people really feel they've done nothing wrong, maybe they could just appeal their 12 hour ban, and explain why "Four Year-Old Kid Raped To Death By Uncle" was the funniest article they've read all week in the RC. There really are no victims here.
The rule didn't exist in 2014, it does now. That example could just as easily been used for an argument to enact it.

Uhm, yeah? I just used it as an example of how rating a horrible event funny isn't just someone legitimately finding it funny, but rather trying to get a rise out of people.
wasn't talking to you in particular my b
About the whole ratings thing
As someone mentioned before, your on a forum where the most voted funny post was the sonic drowning theme to a story about a child that drowned
I disagree with the facepunch hivemind bullshit but thats probably a good indicator on the sense of humor that these forums have
its funny because people get up in arms over a 16x16 icon left by a stranger and ultimately has no meaning
I think that banning for rating a post is stupid but honestly ratings demonstrably do have an effect in debates. The first few ratings tend to massively swing how a post is recieved. I'm not really sure what function the dumb rating serves in general other than for people to validate that they were right for kneejerk reacting a certain way.
Imo ratings have a much more effective place as something to replace one-word replies that aren't bad posts, i.e. "I agree", "I disagree", "I never knew this" etc not "you are stupid".
The latter can just as easily be represented by a counter-argument that gets very positively recieved but that requires actual discussion to take place and effort to be put into the discussion at hand rather than some dudes sitting on the side of a thread drive-by shitting on the side they don't like.
was there an fp census for this year?
Rating tragic events funny or whatever is basically trolling. Trolling is a bannable offense.
I don't understand this sudden discussion?
I agree however that either everyone who does it should be banned (or the people who do it consistently), or no one at all. Cherry-picking is stupid.
I Migrated my account for the new facepunch thing, but its not sending me a verification email for my new account (like my linked google one) :/ Why did garry switch the fourms up in the first place? and whats with the coins thing?

Don’t think so

No, and if anyone feels like doing it, here's the 2017 questions thread, and the results thread, which helps show what people want from the census
Is there a way for me to just update the questions and re-release the same survey? Because that's a lot easier
I've been thinking about doing that census for a while, but I just haven't really found the time. Could I request that we sorta did a pre-census thread where we discuss questions and stuff? It'd be pretty cool for people to be able to suggest questions instead of just letting one person decide it all.
