in my personal opinion rating something inappropriate does not disrupt the discourse of that topic. making a post about an inappropriate rating does. people whining about ratings should get banned, not the people making those ratings.

This argument doesn't make sense, you could say the same about text on your screen just being x amount of pixels. Obviously ratings are upsetting some people with how many bans we've seen, but then there's no possible way to ban everyone trolling with ratings, especially when some mods do it themselves.

The best counter to this problem is to buy a wireless bluetooth mouse and use that whenever you use facepunch on your phone
If you can't seem to find a good contact surface when doing that, the person sitting on front of you in the trains shirt is usually pretty good, if he asks what you're doing just tell him to shut up you're reading a really sensitive news story and you can't fuck this up

I particularly remember accidentally rating a news story that was something like "A full classroom of children beheaded" funny (and it was the only funny in that article) when I tried to scroll. I don't know why some folks are pretending that ratings [I]literally[/I] do not matter at all. They aren't that important but they exist and do have an effect on forum dynamics.

I propose now and then we swap the ratings around, so if you rate funny it actually rates the post as dumb or something
