Conventional wisdom for responsive design is to design it for mobile and tablets first then adapt that to desktop. It's harder to have something made for desktop and turn it into mobile form. A simple solution might be to move the event log stuff on the side to the bottom or have it only show when you select it. Having it show all the time and dominate the mobile screen isn't good imo since you don't really care about who's posting in rust or videos you are about seeing the different sections and your subscriptions (and those sweet sweet coins)
This is what people say all the time. I always feel like that's fine if your primary audience is going to be on mobile. Our primary audience is desktop users, so we need to take care of them first. It's not hard to build a desktop design but stay conscious that you're going to have to make it work for mobile too.
Honestly? I feel there's no need to bother with mobile designs at all. My phone came pre-loaded with Chrome Mobile, which loads desktop sites just fine. Between that and pinch-to-zoom I find myself going out of my way to force desktop on every site I possibly can when I'm on my phone. 9 times out of 10 I find the site easier to navigate that way than I do with the mobile version.
I hate mobile design. So bubbly and cluttered and dumb looking. Just give me the desktop site by default and let me pinch-to-zoom when I need to, kthnx.
Seconded. Just make sure there's no incompatibilities and the scaling is correct and no information (avatars) is hidden, and you're fine.
I mean I frequently access the forum with my phone but I always do the request desktop site thing.
I know that probably about 5 people will actually care, but if the website could end up working on Windows Phone (seems like this isn't a WP exclusive issue, though) I'd probably be down for sucking some dick tbh.

As long as it functions properly on mobile, I'm all for it. About 50-75% of my browsing is in Safari on my phone, so I'd appreciate it if it works properly without having to keep requesting a desktop site, or constantly zoom in or out.

95% of my browsing is chrome on my phone and the rest is on my tv from the couch zoomed in a touch.
Would be awesome for API to put out soon so people can make apps
I use FP Droid and I can't imagine having to use the desktop version on my phone (at least for Oldpunch). Of course I'll have to when the new one launches but for now, I'll hope it gets updated soon. Dead easy to use.

I am extremely fucking happy with this response. Mobile-first designs really get on my nerves.
I'm sure that Facepunch Droid's diligent and wonderful dev will do some wacky CSS hacks to make things work great on a phone anyway.
I'm really thankful for FP Droid. FP has been pretty borked on mobile for me for a few weeks now, and it's the only way I can stand to browse FP on mobile atm.

Speaking of which, will the app transfer seamlessly?
one request: could it be possible to exclude subforums from the latest thread box on the side? would be a heck of a lot more interesting to me if it weren't spammed up with rust forum threads.
Speaking of which, will the app transfer seamlessly?
A lot of work will have to be put in. Not an enormous amount, but quite a bit. My understanding of FP Droid is that it's a web wrapper that applies a custom and very extensive stylesheet that rearranges a lot of things and outright removes others, instead putting them in actual app UI menus. So my guess is that the app won't need a complete overhaul, just some tweaks to get the menus to work, but the CSS will need to be completely redone.

Last I recall, Newpunch had a JSON API. So there won't be any need for dubious scraping and CSS hacking. A custom, built for purpose, native app UI should be entirely possible.
Unless that API is disabled right now.

It works pretty good in Edge Mobile currently but you have to use it in landscape, otherwise it fudges out like for everyone else unless they've got a high resolution screen.
Also if you're still on an WP8.1 device, seriously update it to 10 Mobile if the device is supported.

Oldpunch used to have an API of sorts and it would break constantly. But maybe without vBulletin, it'll be better.

Well the API is still alive and kicking. I can't work it out for the actual forum categories themselves, but you should just be able to add
?json=1
to the end of a url. For example;
https://forum.facepunch.com/f/general/rwgv/Wikipunch-The-Facepunch-Forums-Wiki/1/?json=1

Oh, damn, that's awesome. I thought the JSON API was a goal for later out!
Will a thread creator be able to rename their thread or is it/will it be still a mod only thing?
I might be the only one who is 100% fine with using Facepunch's desktop UI on mobile. I hate mobile-centric big button designs, they usually suck ass.

Desktop pages on mobile > mobile pages on desktop.

I say we have no webpages at all, that way everyone is happy.
Will newpunch have Lynx support?

it'd be pretty sweet if the profile background option allowed you to fit the image beforehand, then if you're doing some gimmicky stuff you won't be aaaaasss likely to mess up
