Really impressed with the character modeling, they did a great job fitting them with the TF2 artstyle.

This was fantastic, attention to detail is incredible [sp]3:01 - the Odd Job hat flying into the Shark's nose. 3:02 - Can rolling off table from weight of object [/sp]
Honestly, the new assets really are the star of the show. They're nothing short of incredible.
A question for the team; will the assets used in the video be available for public use soon?
A question for the team; will the assets used in the video be available for public use soon?
We'll be putting them up on the SFM workshop at some point in the coming weeks!
I usually don't tune into the Saxxies but I'm glad I watched this one. If I didn't know any better I'd say it would have been a work of Valve themselves. That said, the only thing I didn't like was how the breakroom brawl ended. Ending it with the old "something behind you" pointing was a bit of a cheapout when you could have gone with the classic gadget-in-spy's-watch, like shooting pressurized water into the bad guy's eyes and then kicking the chair.
Really good animation, so smooth, some of the best i've seen in these awards
Is no-one else going to mention [sp]the use of the Half-Life VOX voice for the self-destruct intercom?[/sp] That is a really nice touch.
Wow, that was fantastic. I hope you guys consider doing a slight re-release in the future with better SFXs. Definitely one of the best SFM videos I've seen in a long time.
No doubt this is going to win Best Overall, but I also have the feeling that this has been worked on for 1-2 years.
In development since July according to the creators.
And most of the work was January to now, to be honest. https://twitter.com/donhonk/status/971970099031678976?s=19
I dunno, I really liked the contrast between agent Gunn's smooth infiltration and Red team merc's half-assed asset retrieval.
We'll be putting them up on the SFM workshop at some point in the coming weeks!
How much of the assets though?
How much of the assets though?
As much as we can, a lot of it is just reskins of existing props though so we wont be able to upload those
Excellent touch with the multiple clocks in the villian's room, that's so 60s.
I dunno, I really liked the contrast between agent Gunn's smooth infiltration and Red team merc's half-assed asset retrieval.
That might be my favorite part because it fits in with TF2's lore. The mercs we play as are literally the cheapest and quite possibly the worst mercs out there who fight in petty turf wars. In comparison we have Agent Gunn who is clearly a professional who engages in work that has the whole world at stake.
honestly I liked the idea of the ending but it should have been executed better
The fucking grappling hook shot was so goddamn good
honestly I liked the idea of the ending but it should have been executed better
I think its absurdity helps the humor a lot.
The little sound details were great, especially the water dripping off the wet suit after he gets out of the water
I think its absurdity helps the humor a lot.
You can have absurdity without it feeling lazy. I can see where people are coming from thinking that it should be blunt and unsophisticated, but it wouldve been better if it felt more... thought out. Like, maybe when the agent walks out, the camera pans over to a shot of the team wearing vacationing clothes, getting ready to gank him. Or hell, just making it so theyre all wearing swim trunks. Basically just something to show that the ENTIRE Tf2 team wasnt just literally waiting for no reason to ambush this guy.
If this doesn't win best overall then what's even the point of the Saxxy's anymore
Personally, I think it would have been funnier and more dramatic if instead of the gang posing before beating the crap out of our agent they just dogpiled him from off screen, pinning him to the ground and out of view of the camera before horrible sounds play off screen as he's attacked. The problem with the ending is that it doesn't clash enough with the rest of the short, and therefore the mercenaries being a different breed of idiot doesn't really come through as well. When the mercs leave it's with that very somber music and they use very restrained movements that aren't particularly cartoonish. Speeding up their departure as well as throwing in some more taunting would have sold that they're just assholes on a job. Still, this is the best SFM short I've ever seen, and I eagerly await more if you guys get down to it again.
Due to the amount of people who worked on this video, this year will probably be the one where the most people are awarded a saxxy trophy.
I really enjoyed it, I love seeing you guys be so talented, as always. As an animator, I thought the animations were really well done, better than most SFM stuff anyway, so good job on that. If I had a quibble about any of the scenes, it would've been [sp]that you missed a trick and a funny Terminator reference by having the supervillian activate the self destruct mechanism as he sank into the lava, like the Terminator's thumbs up gesture. Could've kept the guessing game going on whether the villian was a human or one of grey mann's bots, tying it further into the universe.[/sp] That was purely something of a personal matter of opinion though. The pacing was a little off at some points (animations could've had punchier timing at places), but nothing unforgiveable, it flowed well enough. The models and the look and feel were great too. I do agree that the sound was a bit patchy here and there, but the visuals kept me engaged enough on the first pass, so I honestly didn't feel it as much.
Only critique I can offer is the fight in the henchmen break room kind of felt a bit off - It was lacking a lot of the "impact" you'd normally see in a spy movie, and a lot of the hits felt soft as a result. That could just be personal preference, though. The rest of it was amazing and definitely on par with some of the professional productions I've seen.
Since Skud (the dog) is available in SFM, I took the quick opportunity to make a quick poster featuring him. Thanks guys!
This made me realize how much I would want a triple a game with a full ham 60/70s Spytech theme, cliches and all. TF2 was the only game that took up the style but never really did much with it outside of some map props and Spy's arsenal.

Shame the gorgeous spytech map Asteroid was never finished.
