Decided to blend my first ferment: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/a1015706-29dc-4101-ac99-91df2d44966f/image.png It's just green habanero's and a plum and I realized I don't really like the taste of green habanero's. Probably should've let it ferment longer but these are just test runs and I've learned a lot more yet again.

They were tiny tiny balls only 16 days ago when I posted the last update. The past September days have been hot, so I have hope that they'll mature outdoors.
Getting there ! !! Chocolate Reaper starting to discolor: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/d88a0c1b-5158-445a-a7c2-e1cb7330624b/image.png Loading Habanero's, please wait: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/45050046-ee13-4034-b804-a9b3d7367ac2/image.png 5 Color has quite some ripe ones. Waiting for some more so I can start a fermentation: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/f25214a4-37f4-4690-a901-2ddbc1523e11/image.png
Hello my fellow agriculturalists. Nice plants and shit. I have 3 questions, though only 2 is related to plants that produce: What is a tree that can be planted at this time of year, but is kinda resilient? I have this slit of yard that is always a little shaded, and the soil is some clayish yellow trash, instakills whatever I tried planting, except tulips and some other plant I can't translate, but also has the bulb. Would some pine/angiosperm tree be good? I want something that will smell neato and fill up that space. I have some strawberries in yard - frequently they get eaten by pests like slugs and snails. I'm afraid of just dumping poison around for the sake of other animals (my cat, neighborhood cats mostly) that might stumble upon. I have a peach tree in yard too. However, it's actually a grafted hybrid of peach and this wild plum we got here that is tasty but not eaten for whatever reason. The problem comes from the plum part - it consistently sends out clones via root over entire yard, which I, to my own dissatisfaction, have to dig up. I'm, afraid of dumping poison/chemical on it for obvious reasons - spread via root to main tree. Is there any way to prevent this or will I just have to dig up the shits every time
Against snails you can spread basically anyting like straw, sheep wool or stuff like that around the strawberries. Mow the clones away, they wither because of lack of power after a while.
What is your climate like?
Continental, maybe a less humid kind of climate of the South of the US, koppen always shows either that one or continental
You've got a lot of options then for fruit trees if you have fairly warm winters, from bananas to grapes. One fruit tree I find has the ability to grow just about anywhere though are apple trees. Seem to be able to withstand any temperature or climate if you get the right variety. Cherry trees may be another good option, since they're both pretty to look at and bear fruit small enough to pick a few at a time and eat immediately, though I'm pretty sure you would have to deal with birds as pests with them.
About two years ago we tried to grow strawberries, and they were in a spot where they got about 8-10 hours of sunlight every day, plus we used loam and made sure to keep them netted from the birds, but for some reason they refuse to produce. The actual plants keep coming back each year, but regardless they won't produce any fruit. Any tips? Our jalapeño and cucumber plants have been producing like crazy this year, so at least it wasn't a total loss!
Some plants are just retarded
Something like this, in powder form. Sorry about the language barrier, didn't think of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayenne_pepper
A, the thing we call paprika, but ground
I'm not 100% sure it'll help prevent slugs and snails, but I use it occasionally to get rabbits, squirrels, and raccoons out of my garden. It'll stick to their paws and make them really upset when they try to lick it off.

What spice is this`? :^)
Forgot to update but I did two harvests. Some Habaneros seemed to turn out orange (which I think is pretty cool), or they are not entirely ripe but oh well, they taste great. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/20b831b6-00ae-4c21-b0d9-1e14ccd540b5/image.png Got two reapers also, and man do they fuck you up. Ate a fingernail-sized piece on a full stomach and I still got cramps https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/446a9b00-153a-454b-976b-02f122f40403/image.png The taste was intriguing, the fruit walls are quite thin and they are not very meaty but that causes them to have a pretty intense flavor (not really fruity, smokey? ) Anyway, added them to the fermentation station (I also went nuts with sauerkraut , my roommates might be getting worried as to where this will all end) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/c102880d-0968-41b5-bee2-627165301e1f/image.png
One of my cacti has gotten some strange marks on its body and I have no idea what's wrong with it, does anyone know what these might be? https://i.imgur.com/c9hzjlA.jpg https://i.imgur.com/IB7UZ8C.jpg https://i.imgur.com/fAYAw8k.jpg I have 4 cacti and a succulent and none of the others have any of these marks, its completely this one, they've always been kept together on my windowsill.
I don't know anything about cacti but it appears to be some kind of fungus. Have you sprayed it with fungicide? Is it kept in a humid area 24/7?
https://i.imgur.com/swUnnuc.jpg My avocado tree, on my back porch. Does anyone know if I can let it be out there in the winter? It's out of wind, but will still suffer the winter temperatures that can go as low as 20 F around here in the dead of winter. My tree is about 1 year old right now. (The duct tape is to keep the damn squirrels out. They keep digging the damn thing up. Cyan and other hot pepper hasn't stopped them so this is our next solution)
Almost time for final harvest! I got lucky and had two more weeks of good weather. The plants are lacking light though as some leaves are yellowing. But we made it ! I'm gonna have 15 something reapers D: Chinese 5 colors are also very proliferous. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/257d2a54-36dd-46cc-ada3-06cc2a923e3f/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/84b961d0-73ff-4001-9cc1-a2ea80b1f6fd/image.png
Strawberries don't grow fruit after the second year.
I may be the last one to harvest peppers. After many months I got a handful of small bishop's crowns. Super happy that I got anything at all. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113148/6048f8cd-0e32-490b-b7ac-f337d8f1548e/20181102_171313.jpg
Got my first seed catalog for 2019 in the mail today, was surprised it was selling potted pawpaw trees. Thinking of getting a couple.
Thread bump for the beginning of the season. Hope you guys that posted before come back to show off whatever you're growing this year.
I grew some sick stuff during the winter. Grey oyster mushrooms. It came in a kit with the growth medium (straw pellets) and the mycelium. You basically mix them together with water and put it in a special bag they provided. Then you put it in a box and wait. And after approximately a month: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113148/e99f08dc-3a0b-4721-a93b-67a8bfe05856/image.png
That looks real pretty. Are they edible or just for aesthetics? I don't really eat mushrooms.
They're edible. Tastewise they weren't very special, a bit like champignons. I'm planning to explore more types of shrooms for growing.
I got some Venus flytraps from IKEA a few months ago too. I was always under the impression that they were hard to keep but after putting them under some growing lights and keeping them hydrated, plus feeding them insects they're already growing what looks like flower stalks. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113148/e99e093e-cf6d-4e53-b691-8fdd55bf1825/image.png
Awe hell yes, it's CHILI TIME BITCHES. Got 9 new varieties this year (see photo album title). I also got grow LEDs to get a head start. Got 20 plants going. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/937fe311-25b5-482b-b3f4-b073d6faca72/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/150278/cf78d66e-ce93-4a0f-b30b-c5987489b26e/image.png https://photos.app.goo.gl/ag6Cp436Rx6oTnqbA
The hard part comes from having them overwinter since they're plants that need that. Giving them tap water and overfeeding them (or feeding them the wrong things) can also kill them. Looks pretty good tho, and those are indeed flowers stalks. Also you better aim to beat this guys mum https://www.reddit.com/r/SavageGarden/comments/6pzenv/ive_posted_these_before_but_my_moms_flytraps_are/
