The Great Wall Offical Trailer- Aka the dumbest looking movie this year

Matt Damon somehow being the star is even less realistic then the giant lizards.
I'm like 90% sure that giant lizards weren't the reason they built the great wall
Mongols rode giant lizards until they all perished during the mini-ice age where they all died in the winter. Go look at any old Mongol art and you'll see pictures of Genghis Khan and his men riding giant lizards into battle

I'm hoping this does something like Marco Polo where the main character is just how we experience mongol culture but the show isn't about him, it's about Mongol politics
Giant lizards - check
European in Asian history - check
The European will speaks with an American accent - check
This movie is going to very, very historically accurate.
Stop ignoring that it's an obvious fantasy genre. if it's going to be shit then only because of obvious plot twists on worse acting.
I'm wondering how well the film will do in China.

While yes, it does seem like this movie is self aware of being dumb, there are a lot of things just in the trailer that will grind some peoples gears. One of which being the, "white washing" argument, considering they have popular white actor Matt Damon running around in Ancient China, and is a pretty touchy subject right now. The plot itself sounds like some thing a fourth grader day dreamed while learning about Chinese history in class. Yeah it's supposed to be a stupid fantasy movie, but even still it comes off as a little too stupid for some people, and honestly shows the worst qualities of Hollywood.
It could just be that they only got Matt Damon for the star power. With any luck, he's just an ambassador that doesn't have much screentime and the real main characters are chinese

So like the old bait and switch? If anything, people are gonna complain that Matt Damon didn't get enough screentime come release ala 2014 Godzilla with Bryan Cranston. That or they could do like Pacific Rim and give us silly-but-awesome moments in the trailers and alienate about 70% of US movie goers. It's hard to please people these days.

chinese people could give less than two shits. matt damon is the second most popular non-chinese actor in china and there are way more chinese a-listers in the movie than what this u.s. trailer shows.

Since the wall was "completed" in 206 BC and has since been rebuilt and remade up until the end of the Ming dynasty, so I'd estimate this film takes place sometime in the 1500s (200 BC + the 1700 year figure given in the trailer) meaning Matt Damon could very well be a Marco-polo esque explorer or something like that.
Or he could just be an actual Chinese official and we're just whitewashing this shit now.
to people complaining about a white guy in a chinese movie you have to remember the chinese have a hard on for hollywood and the actors too
there was some dumbass chinese made movie awhile back with a few american actors like adrian brody
this isn't really any different; basically china is slowly buying up hollywood rather than make their own, current actors included
I think this is actually a Chinese movie, as in chinese money and casting choices etc..
What if they're keeping out shitty Qestern dragons so when they fight them with their own Eastern dragons it minimizes collateral damage?
I'll admit that actually sounds pretty cool.
The chicks in blue armor looked cool.
The Last Samurai is the biggest insult of them all.
The story of the (short lived) Boshin War and the creation of what would become the Empire of Japan is a beautifully tragic story of old traditions subverted for new, families forced to change sides, and the idea that, as a people, Japan couldn't stay locked up forever.
But no gotta have TOMMMM CROOOOS
You missed the point.
Samurai is plural in the title and even if it wasn't, Tom Cruise's character isn't the last samurai in question, but rather it was Katsumoto.
This looks like the very definition of a popcorn flick.

Yeah it totally is. And seeing as there's barely any talking in this trailer outside of Matt Damon I'm guessing he's the only one that speaks english ( + Willem Dafoe who I don't think was even shown)

Nah I just looked it up. The entire movie is supposed to be in English and most of the producers are American. It's a Hollywood movie through and through.
And some of these dragons, I assume, are good people.
Btw, if you didn't know, Legendary was bought by the Chinese and they have a special interest to cater to the Chinese market for major profits.
I see this movie having a great success in China, in EU & US not so much.
"I'm gonna build a wall! "
I'll probably watch this because it looks like one of those drama/action films that turns out to be a complete comedy. I fucking love those kinds of movies.
Mexicans :v:
"What were they trying to keep out?"
Well, history wasn't exactly my strongest subject in high school but I'm pretty damn skippy the answer to that question isn't 'dragons', as this trailer seems to imply.
Emperor Fried Rice
we will never forget
Looking at IMDB, like 99% of the rest of the cast is Chinese (or Chinese ancestry), it is only the main cast that isn't.
Also it is a Joint American-Chinese production
It is actually being released in China first

This is weird.
what if matt damon is chinese in the movie
While a valid critic, a movie with a native character would have much less success so it doesn't make much sense, monetarily speaking.
If people really want producers to take that critic seriously, the audience must start showing interest for those type of movies and characters, which doesn't happen all that often.
Oddly enough that's happening more and more often. Moviegoers that don't just eat up flashy movies are getting annoyed by there always being the same kind of cookiecutter characters we constantly see in big budget films. Because, let's face it, the western world isn't 100% white people.

It'd be interesting if he actually speaks Chinese in the movie.
