actually the grand prix is a great car for a young driver. no tears when they total it. the motor has been made for a decade.gets ~26 mpg. rides smooth.
and synthetic oil in a normal motor doesn't mean nothing. as long as it is changed on time. the car doesn't know what oil is in it.
around here older women drive the grand prixs.

4runner 97' with a manual trans and the 5vzfe.
my dad has one, it has 410 000km of hauling 5000lb+ trailer and he only needed to change the clutch once, timing belt twice, regular maintenance and THAT'S IT!
if you want a invincible car, it has to be a 97' 4runner. Plus, you can switch it into 4wd in the winter when it's slippy, you have H2wd, H4wd and a low range 4wd. it's quite comfy and it,s not expensive to insure

My dad had to replace the alternator 4 times on his 1990something Grand Am, but it was all under warranty.

if you get the grand prix, make sure everything is working fine. Save the money for later repairs (pontiacs are out of production and any repair will cost you)
Don't make a thread with the title, "asking for cheap reliable car" and then shoot down the most obvious fucking choice.
That being said, you can't go wrong with a Toyota Supra Mk III. You can find them for around $5k~. Fast, reliable, coupe. And within your budget.
Also 3.0L I6 with a turbo-charger, rear wheel drive. What more can you want?
