Try the Arena Commander gamemode. I think you'll find that you'll get much better performance.
The performance in the Crusader map is massively impacted by the netcode. Prior to the 2.4 update which pushed a fuckton of things over to server control where they'd previously been client-dependent (which is insane for a finished MMO but acceptable for an alpha up to a point), people used Cheat Engine and filesystem tricks to fake their way into an "offline" Crusader map environment, and their performance easily hit/exceeded 60fps where playing online with a full server gave them 15fps.
Netcode is due for a massive overhaul with 3.0 and CIG is sponsoring the open-source game server netcode project libyojimbo, by a veteran dev who knows his shit, which likely means they're getting custom integration/implementation support in some capacity. As soon as netcode gets the fuck out of the way, performance should improve by significant amounts. 2.5, currently on the public test servers, received a new release candidate on Friday that made noticeable gains in performance (but it's still fucked until the netcode's replaced).
Now, 3.0 isn't likely to come out for at least three months, and when Chris Roberts says December you assume March and become surprised when it goes into public testing (but not the default live build) right before Christmas, so it's completely sensible for people to want to wait now. I'm totally down with that if anyone is not convinced by this free trial -- the live build's netcode's a shit and nobody will argue with you. :v:
BTW, something important to realize: vsync is forced on and can't be disabled in the client's menus as of now; a proper graphics options menu is planned but low priority while the engine's still in flux. This means that if you have a 60Hz display and SC cannot achieve 60fps, you will be locked to half-rate (30fps) even if you're capable of 45-50.
To turn off vsync (and remove the overdone motion blur that actually hurts performance while you're at it), do this:
1. Create a text file in Notepad with the following text in it:
r_VSync = 0
r_motionblur = 0
2. Save it with the filename user.cfg and place it in the Public folder in your Star Citizen install. By default, this is C:\Program Files\Cloud Imperium Games\Star Citizen\Public
Done, game's ready to play.
It looks beautiful. I'm glad I don't keep up with the game because watching these every few months just blows me away. I remember back when they were showing the cutscene landing in a large city people were giving them shit and saying they'll never succeed but look at the progress and scale of the game!
If I had the money to spend freely I'd definitely contribute and buy a ship. I'm not sure whether I'd hunt outlaws and go with the Avenger Stalker or be a cargo hauler.

Thanks, I'll try it.
What is there to do in this build, by the way? I got as far as exploring a small part of the spaceport before getting kicked out (literally, I got a dialog box saying I was disconnected for the reason "Kicked")
If I had the money to spend freely I'd definitely contribute and buy a ship.
You lose out on very little (except getting to play the development builds, if that's your thing) by waiting until the game is in beta or launches out of beta. It's all but guaranteed to come out at this point so you don't have to buy in now to ensure its survival.
It's worth noting that the longer you wait, the higher the price is -- in that people who backed during the Kickstarter got everything for as low as $20 total, but the end plan is for Star Citizen (the MMO) to be $60, and if you want the single-player Wing Commander-spiritual-sequel campaign, Squadron 42, it'll be another $60, and should contain as much content as a solid AAA title. Right now, you can get both for $60 total, but this pricing will slowly increase towards the intended baseline as post-beta launch approaches.
This isn't meant to put pressure on anyone to buy in, it's simply how they're doing it. At the start of the project, they promised backers that they'd get in for the best price in exchange for believing when there was only concept art and dreams to go on -- as the game's gotten more solid, the price has slowly but steadily gone up, bit by bit, maintaining that promise.

I'm 99% sure the kick would've been caused by some sort of system glitch or a timeout or something, and not an admin actually going "fuck this Swedish guy specifically". If you've got the game installed on an HDD and you can install it on an SSD, move it to the SSD ASAP, HDD performance is flatly atrocious by comparison.
I was specifically having problems with that when they brought out SC Alpha 2.0 and introduced the first public iteration of the large space map; after a certain build in the release candidate test server, every single time I tried to log in, without fail, I'd get kicked at 4 minutes 30 of a loading screen due to the connection to the instance straight up timing out. I moved the game to my SSD, and not only did I load into the instance in 30 seconds instead of 4:30+, it didn't kick me again (for that reason -- there were matchmaking failures and other issues back then).
As for what there is to do in the live build (2.4.1), the site has a page for that.
How much would a computer that could run this cost?
How much would a computer that could run this cost?
$1000-1500, a bit lower if you really want to scrape ass over the edge of the line, but realistically if you are going to build a computer specifically to play Star Citizen and you can afford to wait, unless you can afford to throw that much into a machine every couple of years to keep current with the bleeding edge, your best bet is to start your build as close as possible to Star Citizen's launch, if not a few months after. The best CPU/GPUs to run SC haven't been manufactured yet.
How much would a computer that could run this cost?
Amd's zen will be coming out Q4, krabby lake will be 2017, from experience the rx 460 runs "okay" and it is a $130 dollar card. Now I say this besides not knowing the current price for what you ask is because the graphics will be updated and you might want a fast fps and high resolution to have a space sim play at it's full potential, while have a better range.
I need to get signed up and take the name Krombopulos Michael before it's too late.

If you don't have one already just wait for the optimization passes next year or in 3.0. This game runs like ass even on my GTX 1080, 5820k overclocked to 4.7ghz and 32gb of DDR4. I pretty much get the same FPS at 2160p and 1080p
The guy who hires you is a total bro. I love his character because he gives me free shit. I never realized how easy it is to make likeable characters in games.

FUCK
This game looks absolutely sick. I've tried to avoid getting too hyped about it cause it's still a long way off from being feature- and content-complete, but it's hard not to watching this. I got burned blind-purchasing Elite, I hope SC delivers.

Wait for 2.5/6 or 3.0. The FPS problems are entirely serverside.

Alpha is pretty fun right now, if you can get past the bugs and FPS.
Come back around jan/feb for a great time.

Where do you find this dude by the way?
The best advice I can give to people who REALLY want the game but know that they can't handle with Alpha bugs/the godawful performance :
Get the cheapest Aurora/Mustang game package and then forget the game exists. By the end of this year/start next year it should be better, because right now it's all pretty much a giant experiment
And you'll not pay THAT much, the starter ships are cheap as shit in comparison to the multi-crew ones. And there's the free fly weekends if you REALLY want to see what testing means.
It'd be nice if the launcher didn't absolutely destroy your upload bandwidth. I'm all for seeding but holy shit I can't even browse the web, leave my upload speed alone and let me limit it. It's also affecting the download speed.
Yes there's a limit option, it doesn't seem to do anything for me - it's like it limits download but upload is still getting choked. Just a standard 24/1 ADSL2+ connection, i.e. Australia's cutting edge if you don't count the 1% NBN availability.
I've put roughly $300 into this game. No regrets. Love seeing the progress on the game!

This happens to me too, limiting it to the lowest still chokes my internet connection. P2P option doesn't seem to affect anything.

He's referring to the NPC in the 3.0 demo with the video logs. None of that experience is live yet. That guy isn't in. So far your mission options are the Covalex mission, turning comm arrays on (or off if you're bad), and some missions to investigate distress beacons and anomalous signals.
Star Citizen is something I haven't really paid any attention to, but the few times I've taken a look it sure has come a long way.
The sheer size of the game just boggles my mind, like there is a part of me that's constantly telling me there is no way that game actually exists and it's just some sort of pre-rendered thing, but it's pretty darn real and it's shaping up to be something truly first of its kind
It's like everything I loved in Star Wars Galaxies only better.

also if you were wondering why people were wooing at stuff like the quantum drive, it's because the bass in the theater was extreme and made it sound really interesting.

Thanks, wasn't sure if I was missing something.
Currently trying to tick off some of those missions that appear in the journal but it's really hard with the FPS and the random crashing (both ships and the game :v:)
I'm a bit confused as to the game packages; are the singleplayer campaigns and the MMO separate? Which package on this page do I need to buy if I want a ship + the MMO + the campaign?
EDIT:
I just figured out I can swap out ship equipment by selecting the circles around the hull after you spawn it on the landing pad. Is there any way to get a proper description of the modules to help you choose which ones to use? Is there any way to do this in the hangar where FPS is better and doesn't involve blocking a pad?

The package situation is slightly confusing, I'll admit, and that's because in February they did in fact split the single-player campaign and the online packages apart as part of the gradual price increase. Currently the pricing is $45 to buy in for one half and $15 to fill in the missing half. Before the split, $45 would've covered everything.
So, if you want the combo package with both single-player and the online set, you will want to buy the $60 packages labeled "Star Citizen + Squadron 42 Combo". You have a choice between the Aurora MR (space VW van) or Mustang Alpha (space Porsche). There is also a $45 option for each of these, but those don't include the SP campaign.
Right now, the ship equipment swapping business can't be done in your hangar and still affect you in Crusader, but that's the plan. It's not perfect, it's alpha. The blue-dot port system was just added in 2.4, so it's still semi-raw. As for what modules to use, you sort of need to know about the ship equipment system and that's not documented in a really clear and newbie-friendly way, but it does make sense.

Ah okay that makes more sense :v:
Thanks. Do we know yet which of the two starter ships will be the best one to have? By the looks of it one seems hulking and the other fast but fragile, but considering the game is in Alpha do we really know what they're really gonna be like?
Thanks. Do we know yet which of the two starter ships will be the best one to have? By the looks of it one seems hulking and the other fast but fragile, but considering the game is in Alpha do we really know what they're really gonna be like?
There's no "best" ship, it's all about what role you need to fulfill. The Aurora is a sturdy all-rounder, but it's slower than average and isn't an agile fighter. It has a unique flight performance envelope in that it sucks balls at yaw and horizontal strafe, but it's very powerful on pitch/vertical strafe. The Mustang's more agile and fast, but it has limited (or none, on some variants) cargo capacity. It's faster and can serve as a makeshift fighter, but it's less durable.
And, ships won't be a big grind, so you don't have to think of your starter ship as a massive decision that's going to set things in stone forever. Permanent in-game ship earning isn't in yet (wipes come way too frequently, still), but temporary earning is in and is pretty fast and straightforward, overall.
i forgot i actually bought this game back last december when it was $30 for the aurora, which also included squadron 42. haven't played a moment of any of the tests and judging by this demo i feel i made a pretty good decision to buy it then
