There's no "best" ship, it's all about what role you need to fulfill. The Aurora is a sturdy all-rounder, but it's slower than average and isn't an agile fighter. It has a unique flight performance envelope in that it sucks balls at yaw and horizontal strafe, but it's very powerful on pitch/vertical strafe. The Mustang's more agile and fast, but it has limited (or none, on some variants) cargo capacity. It's faster and can serve as a makeshift fighter, but it's less durable.
And, ships won't be a big grind, so you don't have to think of your starter ship as a massive decision that's going to set things in stone forever. Permanent in-game ship earning isn't in yet (wipes come way too frequently, still), but temporary earning is in and is pretty fast and straightforward, overall.
Thanks for the info. Speaking of ships, I noticed some unusual ones around the spaceport, are those spawned by players who bought them for real money in the store?
If you know the basics of cheat engine, you can make yourself a private match of Crusader. You'll be alone, but you can enjoy it with better FPS.

Possibly; there is temporary in-game earning available, so you can have access to ships that you have not actually pledged real cash for. Or they may have spent the cash. Kind of hard to tell which it is without asking if they spent real money or in-game temporary credits for it. Permanent in-game progression isn't in yet because the game's too alpha to not wipe test-credit money every patch.
Here is every ship in the game that has been officially revealed so far (with some exceptions that are known to backers but not listed here, mostly for spoiler reasons). Ships that are marked as "flight ready" are playable, ships marked "hangar ready" may be inspected up-close in their owners' hangars but are not finished enough to fly, and every other status is some stage of production (or on-hold waiting for priority in production) prior to actually being in the game for players to use or look at. This might help you identify the ships you saw.

Is that still a thing that can be done? Because I think I just might. Can't deal with the desync and awful FPS at the moment.

I just tried it on 2.5 ptu, and it handled well. Spawned at Grim Hex, flew about in an ARGO.
I had about 45 FPS around Grim hex, but there were missing models all here and there.
I just went to the security station found an energy rifle and killed a couple people. As I was flying away two Sabres caught my scent and followed me through warp to the comm array I was headed to and shot me down. Fun game

I agree
The hardcore "I scream and cheer when shooting a dead body as if it's novel" SC fans that visits these stage demos are incredibly obnoxious and eye roll-y.
