Pretty sweet thread also Narwhals.
I love the ocean. So mysterious... Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn!
When I was a little kid I was at the beach and walked a bit into the sea (maybe 1-2m from the sand) Suddenly my right leg hurt and there was some black, round thing hanging on the back of my knee (Not a sea urchin, it had no spikes or anything. Just a little black thing). I just used my hand to get rid of it (This didn't hurt for some strange reason) and then I fell down because I couldn't stand anymore. Couldn't walk for a few days. Anyone have a clue what this could have been?

Could be a jellyfish. Where bout's was this? Sandy beach or rocky area?
Sandy beach I think. Was in France.
The ocean is indeed a fascinating place. There's something that's been bugging me for a long time though...
I remember years back on the Discovery Channel, they were talking about some mysterious sounds detected by an autonomous hydrophone array. I tried finding it on Youtube but with no success, they have strange sounds on there but not what I heard on that particular program. It was this strange, warbling sound, I can't even begin to describe what it sounds like. I just wish I could find it again, it was the craziest thing...
The bloop?

Hope your insurance covers exploding whale.
If theres a story behind that picture and it ain't fake, tell me.
Awesome thread. I've never been into marine biology or oceanography, but this makes me reconsider that choice. You have to love the ocean for the fact that it is the last great frontier of exploration.

Nothing like that, it was an on-going, sorta pulsed kind of warbling sound. I guess I could describe it almost as if someone was blowing into a bottle, but instead of a steady tone it warbled a bit.

Dead whale found. Wanted it moved. Put it on a trailer. It bloated and exploded.
Full story here.

Being a whaler in the 1800's would've kicked ass.
I came into this thread expecting Led Zeppelin.
I was initially dissapointed, but content intrigued me. 5 stars.
'specially about the mariana trench, that shit is so cash
I like the ocean because it gave us silly movies like this

What are you talking about, Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus was an astounding cinematical achievement.

I'm just a blob what can I do?
Psychrolutes marcidus
Blobfish are found at depths where the pressure is several dozens of times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient. To remain buoyant, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. The relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats by in front of it. It can be caught by bottom trawling with nets.
Not to much on this guy so I took it all from Wikipedia.
I'm scared to death of the ocean...
I like the ocean, I just hate everything in it... Except penguins. Penguins are a pretty cool fish.

One of these motherfuckers killed Steve Irwin :(
The ocean is so fucking awesome.
Damn it I voted "The ocean's pretty sweet, I guess", then I read the thread, now I want to vote "YES! The ocean kicks ass!"
I wonder how many people are actually reading it. There is little to no copypasta here. Though I did look up my shit to make sure I wasn't supplying false information.
Man, the music is making this thread 500x better.
[editline]11:12PM[/editline]
and don't worry OvB I'm reading.
It's amazing how much of the ocean their is, and how little we know about it. The most odd thing i find funny is that we as humans know more about space, then we even know about the ocean. What's even more astounding is that we have only been to the bottom of Mariana's trench 3 times 1 manned and two unmanned...source wikipidea of course.
