5AM is still my favorite.
I had so much fun in The Specialists. I wish modern games would take that concept, cause no game has ever done that kind of combat that good.
I'm surprised Barley didn't mention Sweet Half-Life or Point of View - awesome single player mods.
I love half-life and the modding scene for it, I still play them to this day.
How on earth is Earth's Special Forces a Half Life 1 mod? Graphically, it looks amazing compared to HL1.
To be quite honest, Point of View, Azure Sheep, Heart of Evil, and Time's End are totally my favorite Half Life 1 mods ever, being some of the most well done, amazingly crafted experiences that can be offered on a goldsrc engine that still stay true to the half life feel.
Kinda as seeing how many of the MP mods for HL and HL2 are dead
Ayy, Master Sword: Continued, I remember actually playing that with Barley way back.
Wonder if my character is still there.

Yeah Sweet Half-Life is imo the best singleplayer mod out there, but nobody ever mentions it. Same with Half-Life: Invasion. Incredible effort went into both of these, and there's literally a tank-driving section in Invasion holy shit

but again like most hl1 mods today nobody even knows they exist despite both being better than 99% of the shit out there.
but how can you talk about best half-life mods without mentioning Scientist Slaugtherhouse?? That shit was waaay too much fun

the guy that made it was the biggest jack of all trades ever, was a literal one man team.
I'll give props for mentioning heart of evil since that's one a lot of people overlook as wel but damn Barley you need to try these three. They are gr8 you'll love em
Sweet Half-Life was amazing. My only complaint with it was that horrifyingly difficult final boss in the Greys' path. At what point did the designer decide having a boss that shoots rockets at you while spawning itty bitty enemies that explode on contact was a good idea?

aha i could've easily made a top 25 list for the amount of dope mods out there for HL1. i chose to pick the more popular mods i've played for this one but i'm considering doing a followup "another" top 10 list later this year with the more obscure ones. i'll def check out sweet half-life and half-life: invasion tho.

Yea for sure, there's a crazy ton of them out there. Nice work with the ones you did mention, tho. so many of those people will overlook.
If you do invasion you'll need to do a bit of fuckery with the game files to set up the English subtitles. In the pre steam days you had a nice handy menu to do it for ou but yeah now you just have to rename the French and English subtitle files and then you're good to go.
Also if you do sweet half life, it's worth mentioning it actually has multiple paths and alternate endings. It's not really stated anywhere but if you want to figure it out yourself I'll spoiler tag it it [sp] after you kill the gonarch you can either go he obvious route into the pipe (recommended for first time playing) or take the secret path by [/sp] [sp]restarting the UFO[/sp]
Sad to see Hazardous Course 2 didn't get mentioned, but to be fair, that mod was released really late in the game. I was reminded of Poke 646 as well, which I've been meaning play sometime.
As much as I'd like to see something like the modding era of HL and HL2 again, I doubt we will. To make a game up to standard, the skill and effort required of developers has increased tenfold. On the plus side, we're deep in the indie era where those skilled and dedicated individuals can support themselves by making games.
