I phrased that wrong. What I meant was that modern American accents are more similar to the way the English language sounded 600 years ago, in England or otherwise.
I just realized how much my New York accent sounds different compared to british english and american english.

No one butchered your language, you have to remember there were many different cultures that settled in America in different regions, that is why people have different accents such as creole and southern, then you have your New York accents. There is no proper way to speak English because our language changes with time. That is why it is one of the hardest to learn because there are so many loopholes.
