if they really wanna ban the word retard they should do it peta style have dismembered people lie around while a big sign says "THE COST OF USING THE WORD RETARD!"
That's really mentally handicapped man. You should call them mentally handicapped.
Wow that's a very offensive post :frown: You should not use gay as a bad word
That's the point
People are so fucking stupid. "retarded" is the SAME EXACT FUCKING MEANING as "mentally challenged" or "mentally unstable" or mental anything. All I can say is that your school is retarded.
This just like when a petition was going around my college to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. Everyone signed it then called me an idiot for not signing it.
The initiative is pointless - it's not the words that matter, it's the intent.
Reminds me of those schools that banned the word 'gay'. Btw 'retard' isn't just derogatory. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/retard Tell your school this.
why should students be educating educators?
This just like when a petition was going around my college to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. Everyone signed it then called me an idiot for not signing it.
Dihydrogen Monoxide is everywhere! it's in your house! IT'S IN YOU!
Dihydrogen Monoxide is everywhere! it's in your house! IT'S IN YOU!
Exactly, it was more of a test to show how little people knew of science. Considering that Dihydrogen Monoxide = H2O
Geez, it's just a word. Why does everyone in your school care so much?
Banning a word wouldn't work. People won't stop saying it anyway.
my schools doing this too
a word only has as much power as you give it by making a big fucking deal about it, your retarded school is giving even more power to the fucking word "retarded" to begin with people are fucking retarded
my schools doing this too
Maybe we go to the same school!
Geez, it's just a word. Why does everyone in your school care so much?
Because they're retarded?
My school already did this. They bribed everyone to sign with candy and shit. [editline]1st March 2011[/editline] It was retarded.
Technically this goes against freedom of speech, it's not cursing, which usually is a bad thing to do in school (depending where you go to school ofc), and I'm sure most people who say it don't actually mean it seriously, nor do they call actually retarded people retards. I call my friends retarded a lot, but it's only a joke, kind of like how you always call your friends gay, or faggot as a means of joking around. Also
a word only has as much power as you give it by making a big fucking deal about it, your retarded school is giving even more power to the fucking word "retarded" to begin with people are fucking retarded
Pretty much this. It's just a word.
I couldn't find any pictures on the school website, but this has been going on for two days now and I'll try to have one tomorrow. My school is having a full-on petition that they're trying to have people sign during the time that we eat our lunch. I honestly don't know why they would care at all, since the word "retard", referring to the term "mental retardation" isn't a derogatory word at all. It's a word of science. I can see why they may want to stop people from using the word in the sense of "Dude, you're so retarded!", but if the person is acting like one then I don't see how that could be any more offensive than saying "Dude, you're so mentally handicapped!", although that would be a little awkward to say. To try and increase their persuasion they even had a mentally retarded girl talk through the speakers to people eating lunch, which is a bit ironic seeing as my school has many of the "special" students help in the cafeteria with washing the dishes or collecting the trays... I think the whole ordeal is kind of ridiculous. Would you sign the petition?
You're retarded OP.
automarge cocks
My school already did this. They bribed everyone to sign with candy and shit. [editline]1st March 2011[/editline] It was retarded.
It takes a powerful man to resist the allure of candy.
At least they made it a petition instead of going full retard and enforcing it without caring about your opinions.
Exactly, it was more of a test to show how little people knew of science. Considering that Dihydrogen Monoxide = H2O
Don't tell people on how to manufacturer drugs. What the fuck is wrong with you?
In my school they call the kids in those classes the Crayon Class.
My school did this last year. I was literally the only person in the whole school that opposed it, a slight disagreement erupted into a school wide fight really. The day they were signing the petition i had the whole lunch room at my table screaming at me to sign it, and i wish i was actually exaggerating this. I made a lot of enemies that day, i even "personally insulted" a teacher whose cousin is retarded by saying that we should be allowed to say what we want; something that the first amendments promises us. Oh oh, and the new "R" word is respect now. It was also a coincidence that, at that time in history class we began learning about philosophers and i stumbled upon Voltaire's famous quote: "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

I think the whole ordeal is kind of ridiculous. Would you sign the petition?
I remember when some kids at my school thought we should ban retard. I looked at the petition list and saw that a bunch of people signed it. Then I wondered, so you ban the word retard, but you don't ban nigger, chink, spic, kike, dago, wop, sand nigger, fag, asshole, any word that could be used as an offensive term. So I was like "No, I will not sign it." I mean its better not to use it. But outright banning it is just sort of ridiculous. Its just one of those feel good petitions that really carry no weight at all.
Eh. I try to cut down my use of using "retard" as an insult, because I know numerous people that have a cousin or brother that is actually retarded. I still wouldn't sign it though, free speech and all that. If I did sign it, I'd sign with my monicker/alias Elliot McGroovy and not actually my real name.
FUCK, just wait until the facepunch drug group get a hold of this thread.
Those ICP are one scary drug group i tell you what [editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
FUCK, just wait until the facepunch drug group get a hold of this thread.
Those ICP are one scary drug group i tell you what
probably because you handled the situation in a horrible way who gives a fuck about this anyway it's not like they can stop you from saying anything ever so who cares, throw it behind you
No. When they first announced the petition about a month in advance, they would weekly send people around homerooms and tell us about it, whenever they asked me if i was going to sign i said no. When they complained i told them that it's just a word. When they started insulting me trying to use my argument against me i did not react. Let that stew for about a month and you get a bombardment of butthurt student council teenagers at your lunch break.
