Lost it at this one. Best site 2012.
Oh and this whole thing is fake, get over it.
Learn from your own words.
don't see why would it be racist
to me it's funny because it's unusual to hear things like that on hikes and it's pretty fucking awesome and fun
most of them were making jokes when saying this stuff I don't see why it shouldn't make us laugh
i suppose one way to put it is that we're laughing with them, not at them. the majority of these quotes are clearly made in jest and are actually quite witty so you really shouldn't feel bad for laughing at them.
This sounds like hiking with a horde of Babycakes.
It also doesn't help that the names of the people that were "quoted" sound black.
How does a name sound "Black"?
How does a name sound "Black"?
"leteefsha"
is a white person's name?
How does a name sound "Black"?
I don't find it racist but there are definitely black names as much as there are Asian names and otherwise.
I'm sorry, but I personally think they sound fake too. It just seems too stereotypical. The idea of, "I get paid full time to take kids on hikes." thing sounds a bit dodgy. While indeed many of these are funny, I'm assuming it's just made up. Unless this guy is a tour guide of sorts, I highly doubt that the majority of his "clients" are "urban kids" (a nice way of saying black, being as nearly all of these quotes are written in a sort of ebonics-esque tone).
Still somewhat funny though.

It could very well be, you're profiling their race based upon stereotypes in nomenclature. Therefore you are racially profiling, and therefore racist.

Several places do pay people to do things like this, especially for week long camp style hikes. This summer I might be doing barge rides and nature hikes with people for cash. It does not sound unrealistic at all that people in the city would send their kids on programs like that.

In that case we're all racists. I'm sorry, but there is not a single person on this earth that does not hold judgement to one particular ethnic group, race, etc. You can try to act like you don't, but that would simply be a lie. One could say you're racist for assuming all Asians are smart. It's not a negetive stereotype, but it would still technically make you a racist.
Based on the fact that black people commonly name their kids things like that, it's safe to assume it came from a black person. It's HEAVILY implied by this site that they are black anyway. Slapping the title, "urban" on it doesn't really do much good being as the language and sentence structure used is typically that of a black person.
It's an indisputable fact that each race and ethnic group has their own characteristics. Generalizations aren't ALWAYS racist. I personally define racism as discrimination based on race. There is a difference between racism and generalization.
Racism - "Dumb lazy nigger."
Generalization - "Black people like menthol cigarettes."

But you can not use generalizations to decide a persons race, my dad smokes menthols and he is white. I agree that all people have some form of bias when it comes to race, but it is best to never assume things about a person because of a stereotype whether the stereotype is positive or negative.
The website's (somewhat) funny, but it's glaringly obvious that it makes fun of a bunch of dumb, preconceived stereotypes about black people, which I find to be pretty racist.
Your mind is the one that instantly jumped to "black people". Meaning you are racist if you think poor language and grammar is related to black people.
Everyone is a little bit racist, end of story.
Ernesto is a Hispanic name.
"Gerald", "Raymond", "Tina", "Rebecca".
So black.
Lol you people are ridiculous. You're actually accusing me of being racist when I'm the one who's pointing out a website that uses stereotypes that are commonly associated with black people. Whether or not they can also extend to other ethnic groups is irrelevant because black people are the ones that are targeted the most by the stereotypes. The message that the website gives off is that the people that it's parodying are meant to be black, and that's racist.
What is so hard to understand about this?

You're not a racist. I too identify the speech patterns of those commonly used by black people. I'm not a racist for making an observation. Did I ever say they are ONLY used by them? No, but more commonly. Saying it's the way a lot of black people talk is as racist as saying Asians eat a lot of rice. Both fairly true statements, which can be said to be racist because it is a commonly accepted generalization.
my dad smokes menthols and he is white
Where in my post did I ever say that only black people smoke them? I said that black people tend to like to smoke them. I never once said they are the only consumers of them (which they actually make up 90% of the 20% based market of menthol cigarette sales).
There is no real way to ever win with people who cry, "racist." White people are often generalized as much, if not more, than any other race. Every single race, ethnic, and religious group in this world has been generalized to some degree.
Like it's commonly observed that Mormons knock on the doors of homes. Christians generally focus more on anti-homosexual agenda than actually acting like a Christian, black people tend to enjoy fried chicken, Asians like to eat rice, etc.
It's all what we know people as. When you say, "Describe black people." there is no real way to say it without being racist. The only thing you could say that could not be deemed racist is, "They have a dark skin tone." Otherwise, most people would say generalizations.
You can't win. Stop this racist bullshit and face the fact that the creator of this site is CLEARLY displaying African American tendencies and speech patterns. It's not rocket science. You're over-analyzing an obvious thing saying, "It's racist to assume." While it may be racist, face the facts. It is CLEARLY INTENDED to be black people.
It's like saying, "Animals with feathers and wings exist, but it's WRONG to assume they're birds!"
You cherry-picked those names.
Here is every name mentioned in a quote:
Cody (the guy leading the hikes)
Thurman
Quinton
D'wayne
Jèvon
Teresa
Desmond
Latrice (not on the hike, a chef that made their food)
Teesha
Gerald
Raymond
Jamarcus
Ernesto
Sharice
Tina
Patrice (x2, may or may not be same both times)
Markell
Terry (a gerbil)
Rebecca
Tisha
Demetrius (Who the hell throws pinecones at what sounds like a Greek demigod?)
D'andre
Ervin (Pogo enthusiast)
Barry
Leon
Shanice
Figure out what race you want to mentally apply to what name at your own leisure.

You're arguing is equivalent to "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" right about now. Stop it.
You're arguing is equivalent to "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" right about now. Stop it.
In his defense, he's right. We live in a world so hell bent on trying not to make generalizations and assumptions, it's downright annoying.
Alright, let's dissect his website:
1. The title has "ghetto" in it. Ghetto is commonly used to describe low-rent neighborhoods, and African American's (based on survey's of popular areas like Detroit, Philadelphia, New York, etc.) make up close to 70% of low-rent "ghetto" areas.
2. The grammar and spelling used in the posts is heavily implied to be used by African American's, and implying that "urban" areas talk like this in general. This is probably the biggest indicator that these posts are for the most part made up. "Latino" people, in my experience both living and being in "ghetto" otherwise known as "urban" areas, never talk like that saying, "dem, dis, etc."
3. Look at the background images. African American's tend to add "s's" to words. Very rarely, with the exception of elderly people, have I ever heard a white or Latino person add "s's" to the end of things.
4. "N'shit" could EASILY be presumed to be an African American.
5. The only real way it could be from another race, is if the person is a white person trying to act black, otherwise known as a "wigger", which clearly adopts speech patterns from African American people.

Its not racism if its peoples observations you know. Anyway, you are all assuming the people he is quoting are black, are you suggesting that only black people talk like that?
Are you suggesting if I was to quote word for word something dumb / funny that a black (or Chinese or Indian or whatever) person said, I would instantly be racist? What if I also quoted white people would I still be racist? What if I was black myself and I quoted black people saying funny / dumb things?
As for the actual site, someone linked me to the twitter page a few months ago and I have been checking it frequently. Its fucking hilarious.

Fucking beautiful.
are you suggesting that only black people talk like that?
Not at all. I'm saying that the way the quotes are worded is reminiscent of the stereotypical notions that racists have of black people. Unfortunately, there's a very large and extant belief that black people do talk like that, and I think the website only serves to reinforce that belief in some people.
You can call me oversensitive, but by no means am I a racist.
[editline].[/editline]
Actually the very last bit is untrue because everyone is racist to some degree, but you know what I mean.

It presents a jumble of quotes that butcher the English language, they could be from anyone from anywhere.
And if they are real, they seem more like a white kid trying to be 'gangsta' and 'ghetto' and overdoing it, or a chav.
Wow this thread got shit on fast
Most racism is subtle. Just because someone or something doesn't actually mention the race of a particular group of people, doesn't mean that it's not racist by default. It also doesn't help that the names of the people that were "quoted" sound black.
So not only does the site try to make fun of imaginary kids from the ghetto that talk in ebonics, they also use black names. So it's pretty reasonable to assume that the group of people that the author is trying to portray as a bunch of flamboyant buffoons, are black, which is pretty racist. Oh and this whole thing is fake, get over it.
Lol you're just an angry little man
You're being racist, you are a guy who thinks names can 'sound black'.
