Well, considering Happy is not a RnB/pop song that is quite understandable. It was more of a modern funk/soul tune.

Pharrell is a pretty diverse producer, this track is kind of an amalgamation of what he did as The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. Happy was actually a pretty unusual track from Pharrell, it was unlike most stuff he's done. Unfortunately that's probably gonna cost him some of the fanbase he gained too.
