• Female game characters, sexist or not?

I don't play video games so I can see realistically portrayed characters, male or female. I can go outside if I wanted to see real people. I play games to feel like a macho badass as I'm mowing down thousands of enemies or play as a sexy scantily clad woman so I can stare at her ass as I'm mowing down thousands of enemies.
Would you all rather have a Male/Female Partner or person in a game with the Face and body of a Spitter?
No but a regular female would be nice. Even though a fat side female character would make great comic relief.
I dont see how tailoring the image of a woman in a video game to be sexually appealing is sexism. Males are the main audience if vidya games. Males are attracted to females. Its not like having scantily clad women is done to put down women in any way. Sure they have every right to be offended, but its no different than women being scantily clad irl, or in a photograph. It may be degrading, but its not sexism.

Nawwww
The Beauties were originally supposed to be nude. When they recorded the animations with the motion capture suits, all of the models were naked. Much of the time, nudity can be seen as an art. For example; Elfen Lied an anime/manga has tons of nude scenes throughout the 13 episodes. Look at the intro. It's not designed to be sexually appealing, but more... pretty.
Halo doenst have blood because their main audience is 12. Is that ageism?
Halo doenst have blood because their main audience is 12. Is that ageism?
Halos just dumb to begin with, and does not apply. (/flameon)

the example of metal gear solid is interesting because it's actually ironic in that pretext. hideo whatshisface said that he was actually exploring themes of sexism in his games. how much of that is just covering for tits i don't know but it's interesting
Wait, how did this discussion get turned back on, I thought we covered everything already :colbert:
Much of the time, nudity can be seen as an art.
hahaha not at all a half naked soul calibur character does not equal a renaissance painting of aphrodite
hahaha not at all a half naked soul calibur character does not equal a renaissance painting of aphrodite
Why not :v:? What about the texture art that go into the clothes, the face, the hair. That's all just shitty drawing on a computer right? How can you be the judge of art?
Technically any 3D model can be considered art. It doesn't instantly become "not art" when it all comes together to form something outrageous. But you are right in that it becomes a different kind of art.
Uncharted is awesome and probably the best-written two games to come out in the past few years (and written by a woman, incidentally!). Don't get me wrong, I think Uncharted is really cool, and it does a good job imitating Indiana Jones. But Indiana Jones movies are pretty shallow and pulpy themselves. When are we going to see a game equivalent of Black Swan or Fiddler on the Roof or something like that? As it stands, the game industry as a whole is immature enough that a snappy, well-written pulp story is the best you can hope to get. My worst fear is that videogames will end up like comic books--forgotten by the world, enjoyed largely by creepy man-children who don't see anything wrong with giving every female character giant breasts and a skintight leotard (that IS a huge generalization, but these problems are still endemic to the comics industry).
I'm willing to put Shadow of the Colossus forward as the video game equivalent of Fritz Lang's M.

The only (developed) female characters I can think of that aren't shallow sex objects are Alex in HL2 and Samus Aran. But Other M put an end to the latter.
I'm willing to put Shadow of the Colossus forward as the video game equivalent of Fritz Lang's M.
As a very big fan of Lang's work, I'm intrigued. How so?
come back th89!! the terrible sexists are out in force again :frown:
/FUCK/ Fem shep. Alpha male baby!
Just look at Rome: Total war wimmin.
It's not sexist because it's usually the same thing with both sexes. The perfect, douche, strong guy and the sexy girl with big lips, boobs and ass. It sucks, cause it takes away so much from the characters in the story, which is one of the main things that makes a good game.
I tend to find that the Japanese sexualise everything, making unrealistically buxomful lasses in their games just to make fan boys drool. However this is a broad generalisation (no pun intended) and many western game companies are guilty too. Whilst I believe sexist would be a wrong definiton, there sure is something patronising about throwing a pair of tits on legs into a plot and expecting people to still take the game seriously. I myself prefer well rounded characters (not necessarily in the physical sense) with an interesting backstory and a unique pesonality. I am not a superficial person and I'd much prefer game devs putting effort into actually fleshing out a character and developing them as people rather than resorting to increasing the bust size. Two female characters that spring to mind that avoid the "special forces super model" category are Alyx Vance ( Obviously HL2) and Jade (from Beyond Good and Evil) That's just my two cents
I personally enjoy having my porn and games in a nice package. Moving from the TV to the computer to find porn and then back again to play more games is so crude. Bayonetta and the like fixes this issue.
I think Faith is a pretty good rendition of a realistic female. Not very pretty, although not really ugly. She doesn't have breasts so large that they form their own gravity field, and her pants don't make her ass stand out more than the sun. And her waist actually looks like it holds bone, muscle and organs. And yet she is a perfectly likeable character.

People who say big men with huge muscles aren't sexy, you're missing the point. We're talking about sexism, not sexy. It's just that people think by making women in games sexy it's sexist. If making unrealistically big males not sexist, then making women with big titties not sexist either. Or they both are sexist. Also saying no one finds big muscle guys in games sexy, well I don't find big titty women sexy, does that make it not sexist?
I should have came to this thread a while ago. I think the big titties on female characters quite disturbing. The massiveness of the tits is like those tits of a obese women having lipo suction everywhere, but the tits, which is disgusting. I don't think I can say female characters are sexist, but rather that some are just made to satisfy sexual crave, while some girls would find it offensive. As for muscular men, it makes sense and it isn't for the "sexy" factor. It's mainly for feeling bad ass, sometimes, maybe only a muscular person, or better put as "atheletic" would be able to do those things he does in his game.

I'm serious here, I'd like some virtual titty here.
Feminism, Masculinism, Racism, Sexism, assholeism, goo-goo-gaw-gaw-ism. These are all human traits and theyre not going to go away no matter how many crocodile tears the 'offended' people shed, they are here to stay. So just take it easy, don't sweat this shit, life is way too god damned short to stress over shit that you can't change. Life's too short to stress over anything in fact, but these types of topics are almost laughable. Just chill out and enjoy life, it's the only one you're getting and putting this ridiculous shit on your plate isn't worth it.
Three things: -It's really easy to dismiss this kind of stuff when it's happening to other people. An inability to understand that not everyone shares your (white male) experience doesn't make you more rational or enlightened, just selfish and myopic. -Your revolutionary new suggestion of "have you considered the status quo?" is neither of those things. Women and racial minorities have been considering your point of view their entire lives because you are dominant and it's thrust upon them at every opportunity. Amazingly enough, some of them aren't content with being second class citizens! -Lastly, your argument that "it's never going to change so get used to it" has been used to stifle criticism of segregation, slavery, limited suffrage, and down the line pretty much every systematic injustice in the history of humanity. All of those things HAVE changed, and they've changed because people thought they were wrong and said and did something about it. Yes, there were people like you who said it was pointless and they should just get used to being treated shittier than you and that they were "crying crocodile tears" but guess what? They won anyway.
