Take Miranda from Mass Effect 2 and Morrigan from Dragon Age, and Alyx from Half Life 2.
Sure, they're all beautiful in their own rights, but they also prove themselves by being powerful in their own rights. Miranda is a powerful biotic, and has saved my ass in combat dozens of times. Morrigan is a powerful maleficar with a deep backstory, and can use magic to advantage. And Alyx is intelligent, brawny, and a companion to Gordon.
So yeah. Nearly all women in games are beautiful and every other guy's fantasy. They just make up for it by making them powerful and capable of holding their ground. And that, to me, is not sexist.

I hate the anime type characters that have huge tits and tiny plates of armor that would only protect about 1 centimeter of skin. I want them to fucking die.

and there's more I'm sure.
You guys act like this is such a bad thing. They're video games, not historical documentaries. Exaggeration of physical and mental characteristics is just part of making it over-the-top and entertaining. If you're looking for average-looking people who you'd see on an average day then play the sims or something, that's what those games are there for, boring RL shit. lol.
To me it doesn't seem so much as a sexist act as it is just a design concept that the modeling team most likely had to follow, though proportions don't really bother me, I do like it more when they're outfits are abit more realistic for the occasion.
Shouldn't you look at this both ways? Sure most female characters are attractive and typically dress a little skimpy, but the men aren't exactly ugly either.

a significant portion of the gaming community are women, bro

but one doesn't eliminate the other. i don't see how a female character being attractive is something that has to be "made up for" and I don't see how every female character has to be jerk-off material
There's no denial that many female characters in video games do infact attempt to provide a sexual appeal. This can be excused however because the target audience of most of these games are infact men - not women.
I mean, there would be an appeal to a car magazine if the magazine had lots of women throughout it, compared to a similar car magazine which had no women in it and had a bunch of fat guys on the cover. Such a product is marketed towards men, and while the magazine with the fat guys on it may not have so much bullshit throughout the magazine, there is a desire for many to buy the first magazine simply because of there being women in it.
The women provide the marketing so you can guess that when you have games featuring women with big tits and stuff that it's an advertisement.
Sexist? Yes. Unfairly so? No. Take a look at MALE game characters for a change... For every game where you play as a ridiculously proportioned girl, there's ten more where you're a super buff dude with a deep voice and asses to kick.
that's not an equivalence though because the games are marketed towards males and designed with them in mind. "overly large, grunting muscular dude" isn't the equivalent of "sexy, scantily-clad female" because the latter isn't going to be generally appealing to a female audience, nor are they intended to be
both characters are designed with a male audience in mind

but nearly half of all gamers are women
a game shouldn't have to rely on bit breasted women to sell well, and many don't (see half-life, portal, etc)
so obviously, no, sexist game characters are not simply because of "appealing to a male demographic" because games don't need to appeal to a male demographic to sell. that only leaves one other explanation
Wait you're saying females don't like masculine males? I'm confused.
Wait you're saying females don't like masculine males? I'm confused.
plenty don't. you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a girl irl who finds marcus fenix attractive.

my point is that just like sexualized female characters are designed to appeal to male gamers, so are the male characters, like the ones in Gears of War or God of War or Dante's Inferno or what have you. so you can't just say "it's ok to have empty, sexualized female characters because just look at the males" because it's not the same thing
As long as the gaming industry is dominated by males then you're always going to have highly sexualised and stereotypical weak women in games
This is bullshit. That's something ugly-ass feminists come up with, because they can't handle being ugly.
I never hear a guy whining about all male avatars having a sixpack and biceps as thick as their heads. The simple fact is that all game avatars are shown as perfection incarnate, or alternatively heavily battlescarred or monstrous. This is because videogames are a getaway from ordinary life. People play games because they want to feel awesome, not because they want an accurate depiction of their ordinary lives.
But hey, I'm sure designers can whip up a game where people play ugly nerd characters, who work boring jobs 8 hours a day, and spend the entire plot proving it's not their looks, but their character that matters, to a girl who ends up dumping him after the first date. We can call it "Realism: The Game". I'm sure it'll be a smash hit.
Men are sooo shallow, amirite.

so a big breasted woman with no personality or clothes is perfection incarnate?
This is because videogames are a getaway from ordinary life. People play games because they want to feel awesome, not because they want an accurate depiction of their ordinary lives.
don't speak for everyone. being fantastic or unrealistic =/= being intellectually vacant
for a community that loves to play up the "games are art" schitck, people on here are pretty quick to shout "they're just entertainment, gosh" whenever they feel they need to
Well they are highly gender oriented, Just like pink pony barbi deluxe house castle what have you is made for young girls gears of war is made for adolescent+ males, and a game like the sims is really designed with EVERYONE in mind, there's different games targeting different ages / genders. I can come up with a handful of every type of game that can suite anyone. You cant just point at Unreal Tournament type games and make a broad generalization of the entire gaming industry. The games you are pointing out literally run on testosterone, of course women won't like them as much as males.
This whole thing really isn't worth debating beyond this point in my opinion.

Exactly. It's just like in politics, all the old female politicians want their 70 year old fashioned rules back.
Some of the older generation can't understand that times have changed and will continue to change.
It doesn't even have to be old women, I hear girls 15+ trying to convince others that if you expose your knee, your a slut.

it absolutely is worth debating because the subject is how a multi-billion dollar industry treats >50% of the world's population

Me and several others already have, if you still don't get it then I can't help you
it's funny cause this implies that A. if they had a male character they wouldn't be able to resist staring at their ass and B. that they are terrible players because they stare at their character's ass instead of looking at what they're doing
I tried that excuse once, and my friend used a retort very similar to what you just said.
In truth, I just feel more comfortable playing as a female character.
