Me and several others already have, if you still don't get it then I can't help you
no, you haven't. all people in here have done is argue that it's ok for female characters to be sexualized and have no personality because the male characters are sometimes over the top, when those aren't the same thing.
I couldn't care less what the characters look like; so long as the game is good.
I couldn't care less what the characters look like; so long as the game is good.
i think having good, non-stereotypical characters is part of a good game
You're either a crazy feminist nut job or you are trolling. Either way I'm done with this thread, all that needed to be said has been said.
Either way I'm done with this thread, all that needed to be said has been said.
but all that's been said in this thread has been a series of half-formed guttural utterances only vaguely resembling any real language??
Lara Croft :allears:
[img_thumb]http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110224181326/half-life/en/images/thumb/9/98/Portal_2_chell_large.jpg/282px-Portal_2_chell_large.jpg[/img_thumb]
It's funny because 'Portal 2' Chell is probably the most "sexualised" character Valve has made so far. That's pretty good if you ask me.
but all that's been said in this thread has been a series of half-formed guttural utterances only vaguely resembling any real language??
And everyone flew by my posts. Yay. [editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
It's funny because 'Portal 2' Chell is probably the most 'sexualised' character Valve has made so far. That's pretty good if you ask me.
How is she "sexualised"? I don't think its the fact that games seem to stereotype women, its more along the lines that most guys don't notice because the majority don't give a shit. While games like Half Life 2, Uncharted, inFamous, Portal, and other games should be commended. The simple fact is that many male gamers don't notice/don't care. I know for one I give a shit only when its ridiculously stupid how scantily clad a women looks or is so fucking 1 dimensional she's the same piece of paper that her character profile was written on.
How is she "sexualised"?
She isn't really, that's why I put it in quotes. At the most, she just got a makeover from Portal 1's rendition, making her a lot more attractive.
but all that's been said in this thread has been a series of half-formed guttural utterances only vaguely resembling any real language??
OR you're missing a keypoint which is show by those guttural roars that only vaguely resemble real language.
The amount of sexist characters has decreased over the years. There's more chance of having a game without gratuitous boobs and armor that protects absolutely nothing. Like, for example, this advert for rift on the steam store.... [img_thumb]http://gyazo.com/64725423a5472732578af23124ba83b8.png[/img_thumb] you can bet 20 years ago that would basically just be a bikini.
I want to go back to the someone's original point which was the over muscled men and over sexualized females. I want to point out that not every guy likes super muscle men, I for one hate it. I also find extremely elaborate bulky armor stupid just as much as armor that seems to only protect a woman's bosom and groin. IF you're going to complain about one being an extreme, then I'll complain about both.
you can bet 20 years ago that would basically just be a bikini.
Totally. Check out the chick in the middle there. Shit's hardcore man I'd almost call this pornography :downs:
My brothers excuse for always choosing a female character whenever possible was: "I don't want to stare at a guys ass all day" Fair enough.
I always play as a male character when possible. Much more... Immensing.
This is bullshit. That's something ugly-ass feminists come up with, because they can't handle being ugly.
hezzy is an ugly-ass feminist? [editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
No seriously Sigma you are starting to sound like some sort of insane feminist.
using feminist as an insult is pretty dumb, that's coming from an insane feminist
Well considering the main demographic of games is a male audience, catering to them would obviously be a better idea. I wouldn't call it sexist really.
no that's actually wrong ugly people are only very rarely portrayed in video games, and when they are it's likely to foreshadow that they will be bad or stupid in some way this is even more prevalent with female characters it most certainly is sexist
NOLF is a fps where you play a woman, I wouldn't say it's sexist. Characters act in a sexist manner towards her but that's because it's the 60s and women are more suited to motherhood rather than international espionage
Considering I entered this thread looking for fapping material, yeah
Guys are most often depicted in a pretty "sexist" manner too then. Gears of War is a bunch of extremely muscled supermen running around, Resident Evil 5 had Chris that was pretty much the same as the guys in GoW plus Wesker (who was shirtless in the ending, I demand a topless Jill then), and most games have extremely ripped guys as main characters.
yeah except it's not really sexist to portray men that way pretty sure they aren't trying to portray men as inferior to women so putting sexist in scarequotes shows you don't really know what sexism means
Yes because a character depicting some extremely deadly superwoman with sideboob is obviously sexist. Never mind that they are probably stronger than even the lead male character, it's showing a bit of nudity so it's obvious she's just some object meant to be inferior to the man (guys showing off muscles that rip through the clothes is fine though).

Also if men nearly always take the lead roles and/or defend the woman: That's because we're wired to be so, it's in our instincts and men are built to be stronger than women. It's nothing that can't be overcome, especially today, but it still affects stuff like this a lot. [editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
well again that's not really sexism either, that's more kind of a chauvinistic stereotype. more of a indicator of awful writers than actual hatred against women
Well that's the point of the thread, discussion if those depictions are sexist or not. I don't really find them sexist, but personal opinion I guess.
I'm currently doing a research paper on how female game characters are represented and I was wondering how people actually feel about female game characters. Have they actually changed over the years or are we still looking at something that appeals to the male gaze? Are the stereotypical ideologies of women being put into console and computer games or are we looking at more equal rights. Is it laura croft, or "dead of alive", extreme beach volley ball is more of the question simply.
I think it depends on the game in question. It could even depend on target audience. Think about it. dead or alive beach volleyball markets itself for guys interested in boobs. Final Fantasy 7, stuff like tifa, marketed itself to early teenagers or a more predominantly male audience. Call of Duty, if it included a female character, would probably have double D's and little to nothing on. That said, Hl2 was more interested in story and character development, and was meant to make you THINK more, so alyx isn't going to be someone who you can just get off to. Stuff like that is a good starting point. Have you thought about asking girl gamers what they think of girls in games?
Also if men nearly always take the lead roles and/or defend the woman: That's because we're wired to be so, it's in our instincts and men are built to be stronger than women. snip wow shit i need to stop posting this late at night :v:
Man I never even knew people had shit like this on their minds, never even occurred to me before this thread. Nor has it to anyone that I've ever met. Complete bullshit and I don't know how they come up with it, but oh well, nutty topics come up in the world from time to time. And it looks like Thisispain is the new Sigma of the thread so I'll leave you guys here to beat this dead horse till the thread dies.
... ok?
Well that's the point of the thread, discussion if those depictions are sexist or not. I don't really find them sexist, but personal opinion I guess.
well sexism specifically means a hatred of women and generally it doesn't come across in an entire game because a large group of people work on them but if you like look at like fan written story shit, that's where the sexism does come across either way games still have a long time to go in terms of character development
TBH I don't know about you guys, but I always run around with rippling muscles and glorious 6 pack abs, shooting guns and rescuing girls with my perfectly trimmed stubble and handsome chiseled features....... not really... I don't think the portrayal of women is generally any worse than the male stereotypes or any worse than other forms of media like films or books. It's all generally a load of aspirational bs, designed around the target audience, isn't everything these days?
