That thing you signed was probably a waiver. So you will have no legal stand.
tell you what I'd kick off if work charged me for food. My way of looking at it is I spend all bloody day there so I am entitled to at least a fry up for brek, toast for a mid morning snack, soup for lunch... afterall if im starving how on earth am I going to work?
Thing is you have to look out of the single case.
These companies know for a fact if they fire one person they will have the role filled by the end of the week and lets face it shelf stacking isnt exactly the most complex job in the world.
The problem is people standing for this crap. Lets take a small example of rebellious's point about not getting food. People start bringing in packed lunches so the employer already sees there is a gap to eliminate this "allowance". Its once this allowance is taken that its down to the staff to take it into their own hands. So what can they do? Its simple stick together if one person complains the rest of the work force must support that member. Now im not talking extreme bullshit such as strikes or anything like that but simple petitions. If nothing happens take it a step further by pass line managers, store manager and take it to head office.
Remember the "manager" above you is likely to only be on a few £ more than yourself and lets face it he/ she doesnt want grief so will 9/10 accept head decisions.
TL/DR: to stop petty bullshit like the case example in this OP and other similar crap "protocol" the Lowery work force must stick together.

I have to disagree, you are there to work for a check you are not "entitled" to free food. At my job it was rare that we were given anything for free and that's how it is at most businesses where I live. I don't see why a business should feed its employees. Maybe in restaurants it would make sense, but not for a job at a store like Costco.
we give the chef the puppy dog eyes, he tells you where to go... then half an hour later your tea is on the side. plus side to being one of a small staff.

Well it sounds like you work in a restaurant, I would understand free food in a business like that.
